Kolkata: The rain has not spared the city's main arterial roads. At multiple places on Thursday, vehicles were forced to move in a single file, using just one of the two-lane flank to avoid battered pockets.
The biggest examples were Diamond Harbour Road, Park Circus Connector, Ambedkar Setu on Bypass, Hyde Road, and Taratala Road.
"The traffic tail was the worst between Mominpore and Ekbalpore on DH Road. The stretch towards Ekbalpore is so bad that only one lane is usable, barely. Even here, smaller vehicles are having extreme difficulty going through, especially when it gets waterlogged like on Thursday morning," said an officer.
"We had a long traffic tail in the evening towards Kasba that went deep into Salt Lake towards Nicco Park-Sector V and the gate of Salt Lake Stadium on Bypass because of battered roads. Vehicles avoided the left flank of the bridge. A major traffic chaos was also reported from Taratala Road at the same time," a DCP said.

Traffic cops said they are trying to "foul" vehicles as much as possible — allowing the opposite flank to be used for same-side movement to control the situation.

"We are also switching to a manual traffic system from time to time to ensure vehicle flow," an officer said.
According to the KMC, the permanent repair with interlocking concrete blocks is pending because of the rain. "Currently, we are doing patchwork, for which we are cutting the road surface. On wider stretches like EM Bypass, we are doing this in phases so that vehicles can keep moving. This also includes filling up craters and potholes. For the last four days, our work has been hampered by the rain. We will resume work from Friday if we get dry weather," said a KMC official.
The official also indicated that repair with interlocking concrete blocks will take some time. "We are keeping our fingers crossed to finish the work before Durga Puja," the official said.

1 2 Kanpur: Senior district authorities inspected Gadatha village in Ghatampur Tehsil, affected by the rising water level of the Yamuna on Friday. The DM also emphasised the need for special attention to sick children, elderly and pregnant women. A medical team will be present in the village. Additionally, the distribution of food should continue regularly, and an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water should be ensured. He appealed to the villagers not to panic. During his inspection of the flood-affected village of Gadasa, one Sukh Devi, a resident of the village and wife of Ramnath, was suffering from a severe illness and wished to seek treatment outside. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the DM arranged for her to be taken out by boat and instructed the health department to provide immediate and appropriate treatment.

In Dholpur, rising water levels in the Parvati River forced authorities to open six gates of the Parvati Dam Friday, releasing 9,844 cusecs of water. Several areas in the district were cut off due to waterlogging and a rise in the Chambal River. The situation worsened in other parts of the state, including Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, Churu, Bikaner, and Sikar. Many wards in Danapur affected by waterlogging

The worst-affected areas include ward numbers 11, 19, 20, 21, 24, 26, 35, 38 and 40 where ankle to knee-deep water has inundated streets and residential areas, severely disrupting normal life. The crisis has been exacerbated by the non-completion of the town's drainage system, a long-pending civic project that has drawn the ire of locals, particularly senior citizens and the sick who find it difficult to navigate through the flooded lanes, said JD(U) vice president of Patna district, Sanjay Kumar Singh. Danapur Nagar Parishad executive officer, Pankaj Kumar, said the district administration has deployed 41 water pumps in an effort to clear water from low-lying areas. All possible efforts are being made to clear water as the pumps are running round-the-clock under the strict supervision of the parishad officials, he said, adding the local administration has also started sprinkling disinfectants to check the outbreak of an epidemic.
