Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the list was finalised following thorough verification by a special committee comprising the Local Government and Housing Ministry, the State Finance Ministry and all local authorities. He announced this during the state-level launch of the Untukmu community upgrade aid programme in Kundasang, where 47 traders from Ranau received the cash assistance. Joachim, who is also the Local Government and Housing Minister, said the initiative reflects the state government's concern for small traders facing rising costs, limited capital, and unstable business locations. The event also saw mock cheques handed to local authorities, with phased disbursement to other districts set to follow. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SINGAPORE: Goh Cheng Liang, founder of Wuthelam Group and Singapore's richest person, died today at the age of 98, his family said, according to a report published in The Straits Times today. According to Forbes' 2025 ranking of the world's billionaires, Goh topped the list for Singapore with an estimated net worth of US$13 billion (RM55 billion). Advertisement He held a majority stake in Japan's Nippon Paint Holdings, which he helped build into a global coatings powerhouse. Born in 1927, he grew up in a rented shophouse room in River Valley and was sent to Johor during World War II, where he helped sell fishing nets. In 1949, he bought surplus paint from a British army auction and began making his own Pigeon Brand paints using a Chinese dictionary to decipher chemical names. His business boomed during the Korean War when imports were restricted. He later became Nippon Paint's distributor in Singapore and founded Wuthelam Holdings in 1974, building it into a multinational company with nearly 60 per cent of Nippon Paint. Goh's other ventures included developing and later selling the former Liang Court mall and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Known for avoiding publicity, he told The Business Times in 1997 that he preferred private companies to public ones. Through the Goh Foundation, he funded cancer research, treatment facilities and scholarships, and supported welfare agencies in Singapore as well as roads, schools and sanitation systems in Chaozhou, China. A cancer survivor himself, he also backed the Goh Cheng Liang Proton Therapy Centre at the National Cancer Centre Singapore. He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Businessman, businesswoman nabbed over RM3.6 million false claims

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): A businessman and a businesswoman have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly submitting false claims involving over RM3.6 million under the Small and Medium Industry (SME) Assistance Programme. Sources said both suspects, in their 50s, were detained around 11am on Tuesday when they appeared at the Sabah MACC office to give their statements. Initial investigations revealed that in 2022 and 2023, the duo allegedly submitted two false claims to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) — one for the supply of retort machines and entrepreneur equipment worth over RM400,000, and another for MeSTI, My Food and Halal certification services worth over RM3.2 million. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 18 and Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. Both suspects were released after paying a RM1,000 deposit each from the RM10,000 bail imposed, and are expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Special Sessions Court for Corruption on Thursday.
