‘Ozempic liya hai toh kya hua, ek zindagi jeeni hai…': Ram Kapoor shares his controversial stance on weight loss medications

Indian Express05-07-2025
Ram Kapoor's drastic weight loss has left the internet both baffled and curious. While the actor has come forth and detailed a strict diet and rigorous physical workout plan behind his change in appearance, speculations run amok about the hidden use of weight loss medications like Ozempic.
In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Ram Kapoor shared his thoughts on weight loss, expressing his controversial stance on the popular medication Ozempic, which has been making headlines across the internet and the healthcare industry.
'It's madness, 'Ozempic liya hai' Toh kya hua? Ek zindagi jeeni hai, jo bhi shortcut doctor bol raha hai, lo! (You have taken Ozempic, so? What happened? You have one life, whatever shortcut the doctor gives, take it!' said the Bade Achhe Lagte Hai actor.
Further talking about the media trolling and judgements he and fellow industry professionals had to face regarding their weight loss, Kapoor said: 'Karan Johar, me, all of us who go through this Ozempic nonsense, you know why we don't react? It's because we know all these people know it; they are mad.'
'Ozempic is an injection that you have to take once a week. Without a doctor, you cannot take it. 'It's a shortcut, it's not natural, live your life as healthy as you can,' they say. 'Why the hell would you not take a shortcut if the doctor is telling you to?' added Kapoor.
But what exactly is it?
Initially developed for the management of diabetes, medications like Ozempic have gained significant traction due to their weight loss benefits.
Dr Jagadish Hiremath, a public health intellectual, told indianexpress.com that semaglutide's (Ozempic's primary component) approval for chronic weight management broadened its use, reflecting a growing recognition of obesity as a chronic disease requiring medical treatment. 'Public awareness, driven by celebrity endorsements and social media, further boosted the visibility of these medications, with terms like 'Ozempic face' becoming part of the cultural lexicon,' he said.
Dr Neeraj Rayate, consultant, bariatric surgery and general surgery, Jupiter Hospital, Baner, Pune, added that Ozempic, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, works by reducing appetite, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting insulin sensitivity. Ozempic (GLP-1 drugs) promotes fat loss by reducing appetite and food intake, which leads to gradual weight loss, primarily from fat.
Semaglutide also helps the pancreas produce insulin, which is how it aids in managing type 2 diabetes. Our body needs insulin to transport glucose (or blood sugar) from the food we eat into our cells, allowing us to use it as energy.
It works by mimicking the role of a natural hormone, called GLP-1 (glucagon like peptide-1) usually produced in response to detecting nutrients when we eat. GLP-1 is part of the signalling pathway that tells your body you have eaten, and prepares it to use the energy that comes from your food.
'Medications like Ozempic can have side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and issues in other organs. Plus, when you stop taking it, the feelings of suppressed appetite will start to go away, and people will start to feel hungry at their old levels,' said Dr Ravate, while adding that for some people, medication will be a tool to improve weight and insulin-related outcomes. For others, food alone is a reasonable pathway to success.
Having said all that, keep in mind that healthcare is individual and decisions around food and/or medicine should be made with the considered advice of healthcare professionals. GPs and dietitians can work with you to address your specific situation and needs, providing the best possible results.

‘From dreamy mornings to filmy nights…': ‘Param Sundari' Janhvi Kapoor walks us through a working day in her life

'From dreamy mornings to filmy nights of #BheegiSaree… here's what a day in Sundari's world looks like,' Janhvi Kapoor captioned her Instagram post as she walked us through a day in her life while filming for an upcoming movie. 'I've been working out really hard,' said the Param Sundari actor, while filming a song sequence. She drank a pre-workout protein smoothie, did her skincare, and got ready for a session. After a grueling Pilates session and killing it on the treadmill, she indulged in fried Halloumi cheese with a Cajun dip. Next, she applied a DIY face mask and then dunked her face in ice water to brighten up her skin. Let's decode her filming prep: Gaurav Thakur, strength and conditioning coach at Somaiya Sports Academy, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, told that cardio helps burn calories, while Pilates improves mobility, flexibility, core strength, and balance. However, Thakur warns, 'If you do Pilates before cardio, your stabiliser muscles will be fatigued, preventing you from performing cardio exercises later effectively.' Thakur recommended a light pre-workout meal 40-60 minutes before exercising, avoiding fats as they take longer to digest. For optimal benefits, he advised Pilates and cardio twice a week. Kapoor started by taking curd with an extra layer of malai, honey, and mashed bananas in a bowl. Mixing it well together, she applied it to her clean face. Next, she squeezed an orange and applied its juice to the mask, gently rubbing it across her face. After washing the mask off, she applied almond oil under her eyes. Explaining its efficacy, consultant dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth noted that while it is a hydrating mask, applying orange on the face is not recommended. 'This is a good mask, especially if you have dry skin, as it will help in moisturising — thanks to the malai,' she said, however, pointing out that scrubbing orange juice on the face can be very irritating to the skin. 'It can sensitise your skin towards UV rays, especially if you are someone with sensitive skin or dark spots. Avoid this completely,' she added. As for the almond oil, Dr Panth explained that it can be applied under the eyes as well as on the whole face, especially after the trauma done by the orange; it acts as a good moisturiser. However, it's essential to consider your skin type, allergies, and individual concerns before incorporating this remedy into your skincare routine. Consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional can also provide personalised recommendations tailored to your specific needs. Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant Dermatologist and Venereologist, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, said that the idea behind ice facial treatment is that the cold temperature constricts blood vessels, which can reduce inflammation and puffiness in the skin, as well as temporarily tighten pores and create a brighter complexion. 'The science behind ice facial is based on the physiological effects of cold temperature on the skin. When your skin is exposed to cold temperatures, the blood vessels in the skin constrict, reducing blood flow to the area. This can cause a temporary reduction in inflammation and puffiness, as well as a tightening of the pores and skin'. While there is no harm in trying out this trend, it may not provide long-term skin benefits. 'It is generally safe to try an ice water facial, but there are some things to keep in mind. First, be sure to use clean, sterile water to avoid introducing bacteria to your skin. Also, avoid holding your face in the ice water for too long, as this can damage the skin and blood vessels,' she advised. Janhvi Kapoor is a fitness enthusiast in the truest sense. Her stellar physique and washboard abs are a testament to her dedication to fitness. Despite her busy schedule, she makes it a point to maintain a proper fitness regimen, which keeps her active and healthy. If you want to take inspiration from her fitness routine, read on.

Why Neena Gupta forbade daughter Masaba from living with her fiance before marriage: ‘They separated, and I was devastated'

Neena Gupta's bold take on love, relationships, and dating has prompted several people to pause and reflect. Her personal experiences have reimagined conventional notions laid down for women in society, and the actor has been associated with all things progressive and empowering. During a recent conversation with podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia, the Badhai Do actor, however, surprised audiences with her somewhat traditional views on live-in relationships and marriage. When her daughter expressed the desire to live with her fiancé before marriage, Neena firmly said no. She explained that marriage has its own phases, and it's only by staying together through difficult times that real understanding and strength are built. However, Masaba's experience had her rethinking her take. 'When Masaba came to me before getting married, she didn't want to marry initially. She said she wants to live with her future husband. Somewhere or the other, my motherly instinct kicked in. I said, 'No, you will not shift with him'. You get married,' recalled the actor. However, sharing how it turned out to be hasty advice on her part, she added, ' It was a mistake. They separated, and I was devastated. I could not imagine. When she told me, I was completely numb for a month, as if I had nothing. It was a very difficult time.' Counselling psychologist Athul Raj told that what holds a relationship together long-term isn't the wedding. 'It's the consistency, the communication, and how people respond to each other when things aren't easy. In a live-in setup, the commitment may not be legal, but the emotional contract is just as real — sometimes more so,' he said. According to him, long-term live-in couples often stay together not because of external expectations, but because the relationship still works for both of them. 'When couples don't have the label of marriage, they often communicate more intentionally. There's no assumption of permanence, so there's more effort to understand each other, repair after conflict, and check in about goals and values,' he shared. Emotionally, relationships tend to evolve with fewer assumptions. Roles are negotiated rather than inherited. Boundaries are spoken, not implied. Raj believes the absence of a formal title doesn't take away from the depth of the bond. If anything, it requires a deeper clarity–about what both people want, how they define loyalty, and how they handle vulnerability. Raj noted that commitment in Indian societies is often only recognised if it fits a familiar format–most often, marriage. So when a couple says they're fully committed but not married, it can create discomfort in families and social circles. Couples should be encouraged to define their relationship privately before responding publicly. 'Are you emotionally aligned? Do you see a shared future? Do you feel safe and respected? If those answers are clear, it becomes easier to face external pressure without being destabilised by it,' he suggested. Raj also added that it is completely normal to feel hurt when others don't understand your choices. 'But when that happens, what couples need to remember is that legitimacy doesn't come from other people's approval. It comes from how the relationship feels on the inside,' he said, adding that it is important to acknowledge that unconventional choices often come with some loneliness. 'There may be moments when your bond feels invisible to others. That can sting. But if your partnership is clear, connected, and real to you, that becomes its form of validation,' he concluded.
