Kaizer Chiefs founder, Kaizer Motaung, has reflected nostalgically on the humble beginnings of what would one day become the most popular football club in South Africa.
Back in 1970, Motaung started the club after he returned from the USA where he was plying his trade as a striker for the Atlanta Chiefs.
The name Kaizer Chiefs was therefore a natural progression in coming up with a name for a club in South Africa.
Motaung was speaking at Wits University as he was awarded a second honorary doctorate in Commerce for his achievements in SA football.

Overcoming Challenges: The Founding and Rise of Kaizer Chiefs FC
'When we founded Kaizer Chiefs, many thought it was a crazy idea,' said Motaung.
'One of the most significant challenges I faced was starting Kaizer Chiefs FC and building it into the powerhouse it is today.'
'We had limited resources, no established fan base, and a lot of scepticism about our chances of success. But I believed in the potential of the club, and I was determined to make it happen.'
Founding the club 55 years ago, it took some time to build a passionate fanbase, Motaung explained.
'There were many obstacles along the way. We faced financial struggles, logistical challenges, and intense competition from established teams.
'But I never gave up. I worked tirelessly to build a strong club. We attracted talented players, and developed a winning culture and subsequently became known as the winners.'
Kaizer Chiefs Conclude Netherlands Pre-Season Tour with 2-1 Defeat to FC Twente
On Wednesday, Kaizer Chiefs ended their pre-season tour of the Netherlands with a 2-1 loss to FC Twente.
Daan Rots opened the scoring for Twente just before the break, before they equalised just after the hour mark from the spot through new skipper Inacio Miguel.
The hosts would have the final say though, as Mitchell van Bergen bagged the winner with five minutes remaining in the clash.
It brought to an end Chiefs' pre-season tour, with four losses and a win over their five friendly clashes against much-fancied opposition.

Kaizer Chiefs: French-based Bafana star put on hold by Amakhosi

Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri has revealed that he held talks with Kaizer Chiefs before the pre-season break. The 30-year-old midfielder is currently with French Ligue 2 side Guingamp, but says he would be open to a move back to South Africa. Kaizer Chiefs already have several central midfielders on their roster, including Thabo Cele, who was signed from Europe in January. Although negotiations between Phiri and Kaizer Chiefs have slowed down, the Bafana star believes they can resume discussions and ultimately reach an agreement. 'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs did contact me and my representatives. We had small talks with Amakhosi, but I think since they were going to prepare for their pre-season in the Netherlands, the talks stalled a bit,' Phiri told Sunday World . 'But hopefully in the upcoming days or weeks, our talks will resume, and we will come up with something,' he added. 'Should something work out, I will be here, but if not, I will go elsewhere and keep pushing.' Chiefs have already lost Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo last month. In the midfield, they might need a bit of experience should Thabo Cele get injured. Phiri spent all his playing career in Europe and might not be an instant success if he decides to move to the PSL. Another Bafana midfielder who Kaizer Chiefs looked at is Siphephelo Sithole. The move failed to materialise with Amakhosi having to settle for Siphesihle Ndlovu. It remains to be seen if the Glamour Boys can add more quality players before the Betway Premiership starts next month. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. WAFCON titans collide: Banyana and Nigeria in winner-takes-all semi-final

Banyana Banyana will be have to be at the top of their game to overcome former champions Nigeria in the semi-finals of WAFCON on Tuesday, says coach Desiree Ellis. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Two of Africa's premier women's football nations will go toe-to-toe on Tuesday evening when South Africa meet Nigeria in a blockbuster WAFCON semi-final at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca at 6pm. At stake is more than just a spot in the final — the winner secures automatic qualification to the 2026 Fifa Women's World Cup. It adds another layer of urgency and intensity to a rivalry that has grown into one of the continent's fiercest. Recent history gives Banyana Banyana reason to be confident. In the last five meetings between the two nations, South Africa have registered two wins, Nigeria have claimed one, and two matches have ended in draws. I watched South Africa's game vs Senegal and I wasn't impressed. South Africa at this level has never been easy for Nigeria but I can assure you that this is one the easiest Banyana side we'll meet in recent times due to the absence of their key players especially thembi. — Pamela Taiye Ilekhuoba (@pamelamodella) July 21, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ This includes Banyana's famous 2-1 group-stage triumph over the Super Falcons in the 2022 WAFCON — the same tournament that ended with South Africa lifting the trophy for the very first time. Speaking ahead of this huge clash, Ellis expressed that their win in 2022 will have little influence on proceedings in this match. 'I don't think it means a lot, it does mean, however, that we know we can get over the line, but I think past results don't really mean anything because it's a different tournament and it's three years down the line,' she said. 'Also, it's a different coach and some new players, but it's the same Nigeria and they have the quality. We have to be on top of our game to make sure we get over the hurdle. They are the only country that has defended back-to-back on numerous occasions, and it would be big for our country.' Their route to the semis has been far from straightforward. After navigating the group phase, Coach Desiree Ellis' Banyana edged Senegal on penalties in a tense quarter-final that finished 0-0 after extra time. It wasn't their most fluid performance, but it was the kind that champions find a way to win — gritty, focused and unyielding under pressure. We need Chelsea fans to pray the same prayer they prayed for the CWC final, for Banyana Banyana's semi final against Nigeria tomorrow. — Lesilo Rula (@kay_mahapa) July 21, 2025 In contrast, Nigeria cruised into the final four with a commanding 5-0 victory over Zambia. Esther Okoronkwo starred with two assists and a goal, while their attacking quartet — including Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade — looked in devastating form. Coach Randy Waldrum's side have been consistent and clinical, and their hunger to reclaim the title they lost in 2022 is clear. Banyana, though, know how to handle the Super Falcons. Their tactical maturity, especially in big games, remains a major asset. The backline, anchored by the experienced Bambanani Mbane, has been solid, while midfielders like Refiloe Jane and Amogelang Motau will be crucial in controlling the rhythm of play. South Africa are expected to stick with their compact defensive shape and rely on the pace of Hildah Magaia and creativity of Jermaine Seoposenwe to exploit spaces on the break. Banyana Banyana would have to improve substantially to beat Nigeria on Tuesday — ERROL💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 (@errolbsk) July 20, 2025 The clash also serves as a repeat of the 2018 final — one that went to penalties and saw Nigeria win the title. But much has changed since then. Banyana have grown from nearly-there contenders to champions with pedigree. They are now battle-tested, cohesive, and know what it takes to grind out results on this stage. There's very little to separate these two teams, and with a World Cup ticket on the line, the margins will be even finer. Tuesday night promises high drama in Casablanca. Whether it's Banyana's discipline or Nigeria's firepower that prevails, one thing is certain: Africa's biggest rivalry will deliver another thrilling chapter — with history and a place on the global stage hanging in the balance.

Chiefs news: Top-rated striker slipping away away, defender drama

Kaizer Chiefs' pursuit of Nigeria's Etiosa Ighodaro remains in muddy waters as the player continues to weigh up his options. 'There's been a lot of talk about Ighodaro joining Chiefs, but the reports suggesting he has signed are inaccurate,' an insider revealed. 'He is still assessing his options both locally and abroad. Nothing has been concluded. AmaKhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi has been vocal about his transfer demands from the club. 'I wouldn't be honest if say that I'm gonna stay if the club doesn't allow me to get all the tools to succeed next season because they have promised, and myself, I have promised the fans that I want to build a successful team that will compete in every competition to win trophies,' Nabi told SuperSportafter winning the Nedbank Cup final, ending Kaizer Chiefs' ten-year trophy drought. 'That's the condition for me to stay [at Chiefs] because I don't feel that I want to go through what I went through this season.' Kaizer Chiefs have won one of their five pre-season fixtures, raising alarm bells from fans to club legends. The latter relates to Tsepo Masilela, who has been vocal about his displeasure in left-back Nkhanyiso Shinga. 'To be honest, when I look at Shinga, interesting player, but defensively, there's been question marks, in my opinion,' he said. 'Even the second goal (conceded against Twente), there's a couple of times (even) in the previous games, he got beaten in one-v-one situations.' 'Your primary job as a defender is to win those duels, to be on top of the winger – that's how you gain confidence. Listen, he's comfortable on the ball, that we can't argue.' 'But again, him inverting most of the time, I found it that it was dragging (Makabi) Lilepo to receive the ball too deep, more like a left-back. I couldn't understand what's the idea of him inverting that much.' Let us know by clicking on the comment tab below this article or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
