Egypt Launches VR Experience at Giza Pyramids to Boost Tourism
Egypt's Sound and Light Company has launched a new virtual reality (VR) experience at the Giza Pyramids, blending cutting-edge technology with the country's ancient heritage in a bid to attract more visitors.
Operated under the Ministry of Public Business Sector and the Holding Company for Tourism and Hotels, the experience allows visitors to 'travel back in time' through immersive 3D simulations. Inside a dedicated venue, guests can explore the tomb of King Tutankhamun and its treasures, witness the construction of the pyramids, dive into the sunken city of Alexandria, and learn about ancient Egyptian mummification rituals.
Mohamed Abdel Aziz, chairman and managing director of the Sound and Light Company, said the VR shows link culture and entertainment, offering an interactive way to revitalize tourism at the Giza Plateau. The initiative is part of a broader modernization plan to update traditional sound-and-light performances with new technologies, including VR and 3D projection mapping, with future expansions planned for other heritage sites such as Karnak, Edfu, Abu Simbel, and Qaitbay Citadel.
Abdel Aziz emphasized the project's role in enhancing Egypt's image as a modern, tech-savvy tourism destination that integrates its authentic heritage with sustainable innovation. 'It's about merging knowledge with the fun of modern technology to attract both young audiences and international visitors,' he said.
The Sound and Light shows, first launched in the 1960s, are among Egypt's signature cultural tourism experiences, combining dramatic lighting, music, and narration to showcase sites like the Giza Pyramids, Karnak, Philae, and Abu Simbel. Recent upgrades, Abdel Aziz noted, have made the shows more engaging, particularly for younger generations, while extending tourist stays and spending in archaeological areas.

U2 members speak out on Gaza: ‘A test of our shared humanity'
The legendary band U2 has always been outspoken about their views and they are now sharing their thoughts about the conflict in Gaza. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr., took to their official site to post statements condemning the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, speaking out in support of the safe return of the remaining Israeli hostages and calling for access to critical care for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. 'Everyone has long been horrified by what is unfolding in Gaza – but the blocking of humanitarian aid and now plans for a military takeover of Gaza City has taken the conflict into uncharted territory,' their site reads. 'We are not experts in the politics of the region, but we want our audience to know where we each stand.' 'Apart from the attack on the Nova music festival on October 7th, which felt like it happened while U2 were on stage at Sphere Las Vegas, I have generally tried to stay out of the politics of the Middle East,' Bono wrote in his individual statement. 'This was not humility, more uncertainty in the face of obvious complexity,' he added. 'I have over recent months written about the war in Gaza in The Atlantic and spoken about it in The Observer, but I circled the subject.' He went on to write that as 'a cofounder of the ONE Campaign, which tackles AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa, I felt my experience should be on the catastrophes facing that work and that part of the world' before stating that 'there is no hierarchy to such things.' Seeing 'images of starving children on the Gaza Strip' has been deeply grieving, Bono added, given his experience witnessing famine first hand in Ethiopia years ago. 'To witness chronic malnutrition up close would make it personal for any family, especially as it affects children,' he wrote. 'Because when the loss of non-combatant life en masse appears so calculated… especially the deaths of children, then 'evil' is not a hyperbolic adjective… in the sacred text of Jew, Christian, and Muslim it is an evil that must be resisted.' 'As someone who has long believed in Israel's right to exist and supported a two-state solution, I want to make clear to anyone who cares to listen our band's condemnation of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's immoral actions and join all who have called for a cessation of hostilities on both sides,' Bono wrote. 'If not Irish voices, please please please stop and listen to Jewish ones.' 'We are all deeply shocked and profoundly grieved by the suffering unfolding in Gaza,' his bandmate, The Edge, wrote. 'What we are witnessing is not a distant tragedy—it is a test of our shared humanity.' 'We know from our own experience in Ireland that peace is not made through dominance,' he continued. 'Peace is made when people sit down with their opponents—when they recognise the equal dignity of all, even those they once feared or despised.'

One of their songs, titled Atshan Ya Zeina, has been featured in the American sci-fi action film Black Widow. Marwan Pablo, Lege-Cy, Shehab - music Friday, 15 August, 10pm U Arena, New Alamein, North Coast The triple bill brings three renowned Egyptian rappers to one stage. Marwan Pablo's career kicked off in the mid-2010s when he was known as Dama. Later, he adopted the Marwan Pablo name in 2017 upon the release of his first single, Al Gholaf X Ozoris (The Cover X Ozoris). The success of this song prompted him to write and produce other tracks, popularizing trap music in his hometown, Alexandria. Pablo collaborated with numerous rappers, creating a network of musicians who strongly influence their fans in Egypt and the Arab region. Lege-Cy has three EPs and one album. His most listened-to songs are Arafa and Betadeen, which have garnered millions of views on YouTube. Shehab, also known as ELDab3, is an Egyptian rapper who initially gained recognition as a music producer before transitioning into rapping around 2016. His artistic journey began in 2012 with the formation of the band Qarar Ezala, an oriental progressive rock band. Ahmed Saad - music Saturday, 16 August Beach Resort, Marassi Ahmed Saad is a prominent pop/shaabi Egyptian singer known for his emotional ballads. He launched his music career in the early 2000s and soon became a staple in Egyptian film and television soundtracks with songs blending traditional Arabic vocal stylings with modern pop and electronic elements. He frequently collaborates with major actors, including his brother Amr Saad. Saad's upcoming concert is part of the Layali Marassi, a summer series providing performances of the best-known singers at the Beach Resort, Marassi. The concerts take place each Saturday until the end of August. Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo - film Sunday, 17 August, 8:30pm Bibliotheca Auditorium, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria The film is directed by Khaled Mansour and co-written by Mohamed El-Hosseiny. Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo is an Egyptian film that premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti Extra section. The film had its Egyptian premiere in January 2025 and was subsequently released in 100 cinemas across the Arab world. Aida Al-Ayoubi - music Tuesday, 18 August, 8:30pm Great Hall, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria Al-Ayoubi's singing career launched in 1991 with her biggest hit, Ala Bali (On my Mind). As a singer, composer, and songwriter, she produced three albums, Ala Bali, Rafiq Omry and Min Zaman, between 1991 and 1996. Al-Ayoubi then disappeared from the music scene and returned quietly in 2004 with a Sufi music album that was partially broadcast on Egyptian TV in Ramadan. In 2011, she joined the band Cairokee for their hit song Ya El-Midan (Oh Square), a nostalgic favourite among many revolutionaries. In recent years, Al-Ayoubi started performing more frequently across numerous Egyptian stages. Her upcoming concert is part of the ongoing 22nd Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Summer Festival.
