Northern seaside town was 'rough' but now southerners want to buy its £40,000 properties

Daily Mirror2 days ago
The average price of a house in this seaside town is much lower than the national average, making it a property hotspot for Brits looking to live by the coast
Seaside living remains a cherished aspiration for many people who dream of leisurely strolls along the beach after a hard day at work. Yet for many, this remains nothing more than a tantalising fantasy that stays frustratingly beyond their grasp.

Northumberland's Newbiggin-By-The-Sea certainly seems to be riding a wave of popularity at the moment - and if house hunters leave it much longer they might just be priced out. The most affordable property currently advertised on Rightmove within the town is a three-bed end of terrace property on Lynwood Avenue, listed for auction with a guide price of £40,000. Meanwhile, another three-bedroom house on the same street is listed for sale at £69,950. Whether you're planning a move or just curious about local property prices, our interactive map shows the house prices in each area of the country.

The typical selling price in the town stands at merely £129,063, which represents considerably less than half Britain's average property cost of £282,000, according to statistics from last year, as per the Express. Lawrence Jones works as a refuse collector for Newcastle City Council and became enchanted with the town four years ago. He lives with his wife Michelle Jones, having moved from Shiremoor.

He said: "We sold our house and the idea was to move to Durham - but Newbiggin was the only place we could get a rental. Twenty years ago I wouldn't have been impressed as it was a little bit rough."
However, Lawrence now treasures his new residence so deeply that within three months of arriving, he purchased a property which he claims has rocketed in value. He added: "You walk along the promenade and everybody speaks to you. It is so friendly."

Ian and Sally Boot are from Nottingham and were in Newbiggin for the day, visiting their son who lives in nearby Blyth. Both agree if their daughter was to also move to the area they'd take the plunge in a flash. Retired engineer Ian said: "I think it's nice - there's free parking, a new cafe and it's nice up the coast in Amble and Bamburgh. Retired civil servant Sally said: "It's quiet and that's why we have come today. We thought we would have a quiet day and it's nice and peaceful.
Marion Longstaff, has run business Pretty Things By The Sea since 2018 after relocating from Windermere in the Lakes. She said: "It is still cheaper than the prices in Amble - it's a hidden gem. Southerners are definitely taking an interest. After lockdown they were coming up for a break - one couple [I met] came up for a long weekend and fell in love. They sold up their property but haven't found a property they want here yet as they were gazumped."

Marion says she will never leave the little seaside enclave and says the coastline is "just my medicine. " Fellow local business owner Annie, a former mechanical engineer, originally from Manchester, has lived in the town for 35 years. She said: "I just like village life and everybody knows everybody. Everybody is very, very friendly. People come on holiday and then they love it here."
Andy Brown runs Jackson's Jewellers and More on the main shopping stretch which is packed with independent shops. He said: "I think the village itself has evolved and people should take note. There is a large variety of shops, all independent, as the rents and rates are all reasonable. The place is also kept as clean as a whistle and the people are beautiful."
Andy said a few decades ago the area was perceived as "rough" but it "always had massive potential" that is finally being realised. Dawn Duddridge, a sales negotiator at local estate agent Rickard, says the market in Newbiggin is booming.
She said: "Properties there don't hang around much, especially on the seafront. ""Often people who have been here on holiday come up from the south and buy a house outright - and have still got a decent amount in the bank."

However this can be remedied with a light blanket instead of duvet being used on a warm night." Another shopper also gave a mixed review, commenting: "Very nice topper. Very soft. Not sure how long will hold its shape for. Feels like it will need a weekly turning over and fluffing up. Good quality tho." Despite this, a top reviewer noted: "I bought this mattress topper in a small double and for the price I wasn't expecting much. I've had it over a week and it is soooo comfy. It's really nice quality. I bought it as the springs on my mattress were starting to bother me. It completely eradicates the issue. Such good value." Skipton's no-deposit mortgage targets growing number of women buying homes alone

New research from Skipton Building Society shows the number of women looking to buy a property alone is now more than those intending to buy with a partner - and their new mortgage could make it easier. More women are planning to buy a home on their own rather than with a partner, according to new research. It was reported that 37 per cent of women intend to buy a property independently, compared to 35 per cent who plan to buy with a partner, with nine out of ten women considering it important to achieve this milestone on their own. ‌ Four in ten cited the need to feel financially secure in their own right, while a third expressed a desire not to rely on a partner to progress in life. While many are motivated by the pursuit of independence, 41 per cent added that they wanted full control over decisions like where to live. ‌ ‌ Data from Skipton Building Society also indicates that women are more likely to buy solo than men. In 2024, it processed 11.5 per cent more mortgage applications from women buying alone than men and so far in 2025, it has received nearly seven per cent more solo applications from women than men. It comes after a state pension warning for millions of Brits who are between two specific ages. Martin Lewis warns 'nothing to do with me' after complaints from money savers. ‌ However, despite these intentions, saving for a deposit on a single income can be a challenging task, with 36 per cent struggling to find a suitable property within their budget and preferred location. Other potential buyers are worried about paying for additional legal fees and surveys without financial support from a partner. Meanwhile, a third are also concerned about whether they will be approved for a mortgage without a second income. The study was commissioned by Skipton Building Society to promote its Track Record Mortgage, which evaluates an applicant's rental payment history to determine affordability – eliminating the need for a deposit. ‌ Its head of mortgage products and proposition, Jen Lloyd, said: "While solo buyers are incredibly motivated, they face a disproportionate number of barriers. The challenges are significant and too often overlooked. "The risks and pressures of buying alone can feel amplified, but that shouldn't prevent people from pursuing this path. It's clear there's demand for more flexible, accessible products tailored to today's buyers." Aneisha Beveridge, head of research at Hamptons, which is part of the Skipton Group, added: "The rise in solo homeownership is closely tied to shifting life milestones." ‌ "With more people going to university, many are renting for longer and delaying homeownership until they're settled in a stable job and location." Aneisha added: "At the same time, marriage and parenthood are happening later in life, meaning more people are buying homes alone rather than as couples." ‌ On average, those women saving for a home currently have £9,420 for a deposit but estimate they will need around £27,414 to get on the property ladder. Jen Lloyd added: "As a building society founded on fairness, we believe in designing solutions that reflect how people actually live. That's why we created our Track Record Mortgage – to help renters who are financially ready but locked out by traditional deposit requirements. "We also need to do more to raise awareness of existing support, so solo buyers feel seen, supported, and confident in their homeownership journey." A staggering 82 per cent are aware of the risks in buying a home alone. More than half worry about the financial strain if their income was to change unexpectedly, and 46 per cent are concerned about being responsible for unforeseen repair costs. Two thirds believe more should be done to encourage and support solo buyers and say support schemes and better tailored mortgage products would be helpful.

Portugal travel warning as summer strikes to hit six airports

The strikes held by SPdH/Menzies ground staff are affecting Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Azores, with disruptions scheduled every weekend in August More travel chaos is on the horizon as airport workers in Portugal go on strike. ‌ Every weekend until the end of August, SPdH/Menzies ground staff who handle bags at Portugal's main airports will walk out. Backed by the SIMA union, they're protesting low wages, unpaid night shifts, and a broken pay agreement after Menzies Aviation's takeover. ‌ These strikes are affecting Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Azores, with disruptions scheduled every weekend in August: August 8–11, August 15–18, August 22–25, and August 29–September 1. The Portugal strikes come as a union in Spain announced its Ryanair workers would strike at 12 airports in the coming weeks. ‌ Have you been impacted by the Portugal or Spain strikes? Email webtravel@ Holidaymaker 'horrifically burned as Shein top reacts with suncream' ‌ The impact is expected to hit major UK airports too — including London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh — with Ryanair, easyJet, and BA set to reduce capacity. Up to 60 UK flights a week could be affected, disrupting travel plans for more than 10,000 people. Although the strike is operated by ground staff, its impact is widespread. Airlines like easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, Wizz Air, and regional carriers will operate at reduced capacity, meaning 50–60 UK flights will be impacted, affecting 9,000–10,800 Brits per week. Key UK airports impacted include London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Liverpool. Aviation experts at AirAdvisor have noted that passengers can claim up to £1,600 in compensation if their bags are lost during the flight. The company has launched a one-of-a-kind online tool available for free that allows travellers to instantly check whether compensation is possible in the case of lost, delayed, or damaged baggage, based on their flight, airline, and route. ‌ Passengers can request reimbursement for essential purchases (clothing, hygiene products, medication) made while waiting for their bags. In some cases, they may also be eligible for a fixed compensation of up to £1,600. This compensation applies when luggage is officially declared lost (after 21 days with no update), returned in unusable or severely damaged condition, or if the delay caused a real, documented financial loss, for example, during a business trip or a significant event. Founder of AirAdvisor, Anton Radchenko, said: 'Many travellers don't realise that, in the case of lost or delayed baggage, airlines are still responsible, even during a strike. This is clearly established by the Montreal Convention: unless the airline can prove it took all reasonable measures to prevent the damage, it is liable for compensation. "Our tool lets you know within seconds whether you can claim compensation for lost, delayed, or damaged luggage. To date, no other service offers anything this simple in Spain. The goal is to empower passengers. Too often, they give up in the face of airline bureaucracy. This simplifies everything. "Since the end of July, the situation at Portuguese airports has been extremely chaotic. Baggage handling systems are paralysed, suitcases are piling up in the terminals, and many passengers, especially Brits, are arriving at their destination without their personal belongings.
