US hits Iran with ‘massive' new sanctions
The US has imposed sweeping new sanctions on Iran's international shipping network, accusing it of illegally funneling tens of billions of dollars in oil revenue to Tehran. The sanctions, announced on Wednesday, target more than 100 individuals, companies, and vessels that the US Treasury described as part of a 'vast shipping empire' run by trader Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Treasury accused Shamkhani of using his father's influence to build a fleet of tankers and container ships moving billions of dollars' worth of oil and petroleum products from Iran and Russia to buyers worldwide, including China, allegedly illegally and through layers of 'front' companies. It accused the network of 'evading sanctions, laundering money, and obfuscating paper trails.' The sanctioned include 12 individuals – among them a French, a UK, and an Italian national – as well as 52 vessels and 15 shipping companies, including one based in Switzerland. 'The Shamkhani family's shipping empire highlights how the Iranian regime elites leverage their positions to accrue massive wealth and fund the regime's dangerous behavior,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. 'These actions put America first by targeting regime elites that profit while Tehran threatens the safety of the US.' The sanctions, dubbed the most 'massive' Iran-related package since 2018, are part of President Donald Trump's renewed 'maximum pressure' strategy to end Iran's uranium enrichment program. They also follow recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Tehran denounced the sanctions as unlawful. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Thursday called them a clear sign of 'the hostility of American policymakers towards the Iranian people,' claiming their real aim was to cripple Iran's development. Iran's uranium enrichment activities have long been seen by the West as a secret attempt to develop atomic weapons. Iran has repeatedly denied this, insisting its nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes. It also warned it would not bow to Washington's demands under pressure, denouncing the sanctions as acts of threat and intimidation.

Ukrainian drone raid leaves 150,000 without power in Russia
A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack overnight has left more than 150,000 residents without electricity in Russia's Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), with additional damage and casualties reported in the southern Rostov Region, local officials have confirmed. The assault began late Monday night and continued for over an hour. Ukrainian forces reportedly launched dozens of UAVs that targeted infrastructure across Donetsk, Makeyevka, and Yasinovataya, causing widespread blackouts after several electrical substations were struck. Local witnesses reported loud explosions and the sound of UAVs across several districts, with air defenses active throughout the night. A major blaze was seen in Donetsk's Kuibyshevsky district, while one drone reportedly crashed into a residential building in the Kievsky district. Emergency crews were deployed to multiple sites. No civilian injuries were reported in Donetsk as of Tuesday morning. In the neighboring Rostov Region, Governor Yury Slyusar confirmed that Ukrainian drones were intercepted over five districts: Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Salsk, Volgodonsk, Bokovsky, and Tarasovsky. Despite air defenses, several drones struck civilian areas. One fatality was reported in Volgodonsk, where a drone strike damaged a vehicle, killing the driver. A private home in Salsk sustained roof damage and broken windows, while a fire also broke out at a local railway station. At least one passenger train 'was moved to a safe distance' amid the raid, according to Slyusar. Russian Railways (RZhD) reported that train traffic through Salsk station in Rostov Region was temporarily suspended after drone debris caused a fire on a freight train. There were no injuries, and the blaze was quickly contained, the company said. Ukraine has been conducting UAV raids deep into Russian territory for months, often striking residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. The Russian government has condemned the attacks as 'terrorist acts' that deliberately target civilians. In May, a string of suspected Ukrainian sabotage operations on Russian railroads caused the derailment of a passenger train in Bryansk Region, killing seven civilians and injuring dozens more.

Gunman storms Manhattan skyscraper
A gunman armed with a rifle opened fire inside a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, reportedly killing a New York City police officer and critically injuring at least two others before fatally shooting himself, multiple media outlets have reported. The incident unfolded at around 6:30pm inside 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story skyscraper that houses the headquarters of Blackstone, the NFL, and other major firms. The shooter, who has not yet been publicly identified, entered the building wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying what witnesses described as a high-capacity rifle. The suspect opened fire in the lobby before barricading himself on the 33rd floor, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police sources cited by ABC News and the New York Post. Footage shared by Fox News and local media showed heavily armed NYPD and Sheriff's Department officers with rifles drawn evacuating employees and searching the building. Lines of people were seen exiting with their hands raised as officers secured each floor. At least one person was carried by police, and another was treated on the ground, video showed. The FBI confirmed that agents from its New York Field Office responded to assist with the investigation. Deputy Director Dan Bongino described the situation as an 'active crime scene' on social media. Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers to avoid the area and follow safety instructions, stating that an 'active shooter investigation' was underway. The city's emergency alert system warned of major traffic and transit disruptions around Park Avenue and East 52nd Street. DETAILS TO FOLLOW
