How a young Kochi artist is redefining art: one leaf at a time
Manu K M from Kochi transforms ordinary leaves into breathtaking art through fearless creativity and relentless grit. He started with childhood scribbles and gained Instagram fame, carving intricate portraits and designs on jackfruit and other leaves. His art gained recognition after a celebrity endorsement, and he now creates affordable, accessible art rooted in nature and human passion. In a world drowning in digital dazzle and sprawling canvases, Manu K M from Kochi has found his own quiet revolution, carving breathtaking art on something as ordinary as a leaf. At just 27, Manu's story is a heartwarming tale of fearless creativity, relentless grit, and a mind that turned a leaf into a legend. As the proverb goes, 'When the going gets tough, the tough get going.' And Manu certainly did, by turning nature's simplest offering into an extraordinary canvas. From Childhood Scribbles to Instagram Fame 'Art has been my first love,' Manu says with a nostalgic smile. 'Since I was a kid, I'd always be drawing, crafting—anything to keep my hands busy.' But when he launched his Instagram page (aesthetic.__.soul) in 2017 to show off his work, reality hit like a splash of cold water. 'Talent alone doesn't cut the mustard anymore. There are just too many artists out there. If you want to stand out, you have to bring something unique. ' Manu threw himself into various art forms—pencil sketches, mandalas, stencil art, even coffee and sand paintings. Yet, it felt like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. 'No one is a prophet in their own land,' he reflects, 'so I knew I had to think beyond the usual.' The spark came from a video of a Chinese artist creating delicate leaf portraits using laser technology. 'That was my light bulb moment—I thought, why not me? Why not leaf art?' The Leaf: Nature's New Canvas Manu's first foray into leaf art was anything but smooth sailing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'My very first attempt was Buddha's face on a wild jackfruit leaf, and it was a flop,' he admits humbly. But rather than packing up his tools, Manu kept at it with small cartoons and caricatures on leaves. 'Those little successes gave me wings to dream bigger.' Why jackfruit and wild jackfruit leaves? 'They have strong veins and dry tough, making them perfect for the intricate carvings I do,' he explains. 'I dry them under my bed or a door, spray them lightly, and then begin the delicate process. It's a real labour of love.' Precision and Patience Manu shows off his favorite tool—a precision knife that looks deceptively like a pen. 'At first, I started with a simple shaving blade,' he says. 'But this is a game-changer. It feels like an extension of my hand, allowing me to carve with incredible accuracy.' Before the carving begins, he sketches the outline with a permanent marker on the dried leaf, mapping out his masterpiece. Hundreds of Stories Etched in Time Since 2017, Manu has created over 600 leaf artworks—ranging from miniature portraits to intricate full-face carvings. Each one gets the royal treatment with varnishing to fend off fungus and decay, then framed like a priceless gem. 'The varnish is crucial. It's a delicate dance between preserving the leaf and showcasing the artwork.' Depending on the leaf—peepal, banyan, teak, palm—the work can take anywhere from one to seven hours, demanding patience and unwavering focus. When the Stars Took Notice Manu's art catapulted to fame when Malayalam actor Kunchacko Boban shared his leaf art video on Instagram in 2018. 'That post went viral overnight—over six lakh views! It put my work in the spotlight.' Bollywood, however, remains a dream on the horizon. 'Not yet, but maybe one day,' Manu chuckles, eyes twinkling with hope. Dots, Dedication, and Beyond One of Manu's proudest achievements is a dotted portrait of Deepika Padukone, where every single dot was etched painstakingly with the knife tip—a process that took him three days. 'It was like threading a needle with a sword,' he jokes. This painstaking style also graced portraits of Cristiano Ronaldo, demonstrating his versatility and steady hand. Looking forward, Manu dreams big: 'I want to take leaf art to new heights, combining it with resin to make it more durable and timeless. I'm even trying my hand at maple leaves, though getting them here is like finding a needle in a haystack.' From Banking Halls to Artistic Halls Balancing passion with reality wasn't easy. Financial pressures pulled Manu back into banking and sales jobs before his art took flight. 'I juggled both for a while, but once my videos gained traction, I knew it was time to quit and dive in headfirst. Best decision ever.' Affordable, Accessible Art Manu's art isn't just for the elite—it's accessible too. Prices start at ₹1,200 for single portraits and ₹1,600 for couples, inclusive of framing and delivery. 'Customers can choose the leaf size, but I'll pick the best leaf for the job.' His art invites everyone to own a slice of nature's beauty, carved with human passion. Rooted in Kochi, Reaching for the Stars Sitting in his cozy Kochi workspace, Manu sums up his philosophy: 'Art is not just what you see, but what you feel inside. My leaf art tells stories—of nature, of people, and of moments frozen in time.' Manu's creations are living proof that inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places, turning everyday leaves into legends. So the next time you see a leaf fluttering to the ground, remember: beauty and brilliance might just be waiting for a steady hand and a curious heart to bring it to life. In Manu's world, the grass or leaf—is indeed greener, and carved with love. It's a story of craft overcoming convention, reminding us all that sometimes, the smallest things hold the biggest possibilities.
