2025 UFL MVP Power Rankings: Jordan Ta'amu, Bryce Perkins on top after Week 5
Bryce Perkins has guided the Michigan Panthers to a 3-2 mark, tied atop the USFL Conference, while Jordan Ta'amu has the DC Defenders sitting at 4-1, atop the XFL Conference.
Where do Perkins and Ta'amu land in my latest MVP rankings, and is Arlington QB Luis Perez gaining ground in the race?
Here's a look at my fifth UFL MVP power rankings of the season.

5. St. Louis Battlehawks RB Jacob Saylors
Week 5 stat line: 73 total yards on 14 touches
Week 5 result: 32-27 win vs. Michigan
While his production has dipped in recent weeks, Saylors remains one of the most prolific rushers and receivers in the league with 255 rushing yards and 202 receiving yards through the first half of the season. He ranks in the top 10 of each category.
Saylors is tied for first place with Arlington Renegades tailback DeVeon Smith for rushing TDs this season with four and ranks just behind Arlington tailback Kalen Ballage in rushing yards per game at 51. Ballage, who leads the league in rushing with 276 yards, is inching closer toward becoming an MVP candidate himself.
4. Houston Roughnecks QB Jalan McClendon
Week 5 stat line: 22-of-31 for 171 passing yards
Week 5 result: 27-3 win at San Antonio
The Roughnecks won just once in 2024. In 2025, they doubled that tally through the first half of the season and put themselves within striking distance of a playoff spot in the USFL Conference after settling on McClendon as their starting QB.
While his numbers weren't eye-popping in Week 5, McClendon's ability to throw the ball downfield and his cool demeanor have changed the attitude of an offense that had been stagnant.
Now, with wideout Justin Hall at his disposal, McClendon has an opportunity to help the Roughnecks reach the playoffs for the first time in a wide-open USFL Conference. Houston is just a game back of first place.
3. Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez
Week 5 stat line: 22-of-33 for 268 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Week 5 result: 37-33 loss vs. D.C.
Perez's play has been steady throughout the season. He is the only player to see more than 100 of his passes end in completions while being just one of two players with a completion percentage above 70% in the league.
Given the balance the Renegade offense has shown with the league's most prolific rusher and its second-most prolific passer, Perez's performance is that much more impressive.
2. Michigan Panthers QB Bryce Perkins
Week 5 stat line: 21-of-25 for 235 passing yards, 2 TDs
Week 5 result: 32-27 loss at St. Louis
Perkins played his best game of the season in Week 5, and that's saying something for a player who was the two-time Offensive Player of the Week heading into an elite passing performance against the Battlehawks. The Panthers are still tied for first place in the USFL Conference and look like the favorite to win it.
Had Perkins been Michigan's Day 1 starter, it's fair to ask if his numbers would be better. He leads the league in completion percentage at 72.3%, owns a 3-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio and has accounted for five total TDs this season.
1. DC Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu
Week 5 stat line: 23-of-46 passing for 308 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
Week 5 result: 37-33 win at Arlington
Over the last two weeks, no player has been more prolific than Ta'amu. He averaged more than 300 passing yards per game during this recent stretch, moved the Defenders to 4-1 and has played his best ball against two teams expected to compete for the second spot in the XFL Conference title game behind D.C.
Ta'amu leads the UFL in passing TDs (nine) and total TDs (11) and is the only player in the league to pass for more than 1,000 yards through five games (1,213). If the MVP is awarded to the best player on the best team, it's difficult to argue how anyone could unseat Ta'amu.

View more Video Transcript Based on last night's game, what's more likely in your mind? That the Cincinnati Bengals reversed their fortunes and made the playoffs, or that the Washington Commanders reverse their fortunes and miss the playoffs this season? Like, that's a great question, and I have felt this way for a long time. Yeah, kudos to you, Snap, but maybe this isn't as strong of a take today after what we saw the Bengals' defense look like last night. But I think that it is more, more likely that the Bengals make the playoffs because I think it was a statistical anomaly last year that the Bengals missed the playoffs. I mean, I expect Joe Burrow, you know, let's say he doesn't have an MVP caliber season. I still think as long as you have Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase and T. Higgins in that offense and the continuity that they have had from last year to this year, that they will always be good enough to be in the conversation. And I cannot imagine. As long as everybody stays healthy, of course, we couch every single argument with as long as they stay healthy, I cannot imagine a world where the Bengals with this offensive firepower miss the playoffs yet again. Their defense is stinky. It's absolutely stinky, and all of the offseason distraction and conversation will Trey Hendrickson be a Bengal? Will Trey Hendrickson not be a Bengal, of course, that will, you know, hurt morale and be a distraction, and any distractions in August aren't gonna help a team, but I think this Bengals team is just too loaded offensively, at least, to miss the playoffs two years in a row. This is a tough question for me, but I got to go the opposite way. As much as I hear you on the Bengals making the playoffs, if I'm gonna have to pick what's more likely, I keep thinking about the staggering analytics behind the Commanders' success last year. Now, let me be clear, I think Jayden Daniels is the future. I think Jayden Daniels is absolutely spectacular, and I think it's also okay to admit that last year the Commanders played a little ahead of their skis. In fact, if you listen to Inside Coverage last year, Charles Robinson talked a couple of times about how people even within the organization accepted that Jayden had played so well that they were playing past the level of talent that they actually had on the field. They understood that internally. Now, the big offseason tried to upgrade some of that, but go back to Warren Sharpe's analytics. They had a historic fourth down conversion rate. We talk about the Tush push all the time. Hold my beer. Washington was the best team on fourth down last season. So you start talking about a historic fourth down conversion rate. We talk about the little moments, like I don't know, somebody walking off the field during, um Hail Mary, not paying attention. The little things that happened last year that went Washington's way gave them a real leg up at the beginning of this sort of run that I think they're, they're poised for. But if we're playing this, what's the future look like? A year ago, right now, the entire football community was obsessed with the concept that CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans were about to become the same. The same type of competitor in the AFC that the Bills are, that the Ravens are, that the Chiefs are. Did they do that? No. Were they still a playoff team? Yes, but it was a very difficult battle for them to get there. A lot of reasons why. But it's a reminder that we can turn ourselves into a hype machine that just presumes a team is going to pick up where they left off. Frank Schwab again, Inside Coverage has long talked about this for the last couple of months. He was high on Washington last year. This year, he's big on Washington taking a small step back. Now, what does that step back look like? To me, Washington's probably about a 10-win football team. Should that still make the playoffs in the NFC? Yeah, it absolutely should. But when we talk about the risers and the fallers and what it's all gonna look like, I think there's at least a little bit of concern if you're a Washington fan thinking, hey, we just cracked the code and we are about to be this team for the next 15 years because of Jayden Daniels. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that the Cincinnati. Bengals went to a Super Bowl and thought, yeah, we cracked that code. This is who we're going to be every single year. I've seen one great year from Jayden Daniels in a year that the football gods simply kissed the Washington Commanders in ways that we haven't seen in a long time. And it's better to be lucky than good. But if I got a bank on something that's gonna turn itself around. Luck doesn't always favor the same team twice in a row. I think Washington could take a step back because of it. Close

Two LSU football defenders earn preseason All-American honors
Two LSU football linebackers earned preseason All-American honors from the Associated Press on Monday. Whit Weeks landed on the first team with Harold Perkins joining the second team. Weeks and Perkins both missed spring practice after each had an injury that required surgery in 2024. Perkins tore his ACL in week four and was out for the year. Weeks was carted off the field in LSU's bowl win after playing the entire regular season. Both recoveries progressed as expected, and the duo is making a strong impression during fall camp. Weeks, a junior, is coming off a breakout campaign where he finished No. 2 among SEC linebackers in stops and pressures. With a strong year, Weeks will finish as one of the most productive linebackers in LSU history and compete for the Butkus Award. Perkins' narrative is a little more complicated. He was a star situational pass rusher in 2022, but he struggled after moving to inside backer in 2023. It's been an up-and-down three years for Perkins as he enters his redshirt junior campaign. Perkins will play the STAR role in Blake Baker's defense this fall. By all accounts, he's more comfortable there. There's still some uncertainty about how Perkins will look in 2025, but his raw athletic ability was enough to earn him a spot on the All-American list. Weeks and Perkins will take the field with LSU when the Tigers kickoff their season at Clemson on Aug. 30. LSU football coach Brian Kelly on what the return of Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks means for LSU "Presence is impactful, right? You see them, you feel them, you hear them. And so when somebody's not around in a room, you can kind of feel the temperature change a little bit. The temperature's a little bit different when those two guys are in the room," Kelly said at the start of fall camp. "People talk about missing somebody. It's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference," Kelly said.

Five-time All-Star John Wall retires from NBA after injuries derailed career
John Wall, a five-time NBA All-Star who spent the majority of his career with the Washington Wizards, announced his retirement from professional basketball on Tuesday, Aug. 19. In a post on social media, Wall thanked family and fans and said he wants to remain involved in the game. He hasn't played in the NBA since the 2022-23 season, and his longevity and production were interrupted by injuries, especially late in his career. After spending one season in college at Kentucky where the Wildcats went to the Elite Eight under John Calipari, Wall was the No. 1 overall pick by the Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft, and he zoomed into the league with his blazing speed and explosiveness. He averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 assists and 1.8 steals in his rookie season, earning second-team All-Rookie honors. Wall, the 2014 NBA slam dunk contest champion. was just the player to help usher in the Wizards' rebuild and distance the franchise from the end of the Gilbert Arenas tenure. Wall's dynamic style as a scorer, pick-and-roll ace, passer, defender and fastbreak generator made him a fan favorite in Washington, D.C. His behind-the-back move with the basketball while racing toward the rim baffled defenders and often resulted in creative, blow-by layups. By the time Scott Brooks took over as coach of the Wizards in 2016, Washington had turned into one of the better teams in the league. With Bradley Beal, the No. 3 pick in the 2012 draft, the Wizards also had one of the best backcourts in the league. Washington finished 49-33 in 2016-17 and lost to the Boston Celtics in a seven-game second-round series. That season, Wall averaged 23.1 points, 10.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals and shot 45.1% from the field, 32.7% on 3-pointers and 80.1% on free throws. He made the All-Star team, finished seventh in MVP voting and made his only All-NBA team. However, the Wizards haven't won a playoff series since, and injuries began to derail Wall's career. After playing in 78 game in 2017-18, he never played in more than 41 games the next five seasons and missed all of the 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons. He played nine seasons for the Wizards who traded him to Houston in 2020. He spent his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers. In a tribute post on social media, the Wizards called Wall one of the best players in franchise history.
