Browns-Panthers preseason game gathered 2.3 million viewers

USA Today7 hours ago
It's been revealed that the Cleveland Browns had very impressive viewership numbers in their first preseason game of the season. Friday night's matchup against the Carolina Panthers generated 2.3 million viewers on NFL Network. For comparison, the average number of NBA fans who tune into a regular season game is 1.53 million, according to Forbes.
When it comes to giving out credit for this national attention, Cleveland can thank their rookie quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. Despite being fourth on the depth chart, the Browns started Sanders after injuries to other quarterbacks, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. The rookie put on a show for his large audience, passing for 138 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions in almost three full quarters of play. It was a phenomenal first start for Sanders that resulted in decisive throws and highlight-reel-worthy plays. This doesn't discredit any of the depth players who had solid performances on Friday, but it's no secret that Shedeur Sanders attracts national attention no matter how he performs.
The Browns are expected to repeat their high viewership in their next preseason game on Saturday, August 16th. Cleveland will visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and possibly face their starters for a series or two. Also expected to play is rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who will now have to top Sanders's performance if he wants to claim the current spotlight. No matter the result, the Browns' quarterback room is one of the most popular storylines around the NFL.

Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim attends boyfriend Myles Garrett's practice

The year 2025 has seen a significant increase in crossovers between the NFL and the Olympics. Months after NFL team owners voted to allow NFL participation in the 2028 Olympics and a day after Michael Phelps helped teach Baltimore Ravens players how to swim, Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Chloe Kim became the latest addition to the recent trend. Kim, who is dating star Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, attended the Browns' joint training camp practice with the Eagles on Thursday. She recorded the experience on her Instagram story, first with a picture of Eagles "animal ambassador" Noah the Eagle, then with a video of Garrett warming up with his Browns teammates. NFL TRAINING CAMP: Joint practice schedule for 2025 preseason Kim is a two-time Olympic gold medalist after winning the halfpipe snowboarding event at each of the last two Olympic Winter Games. Rumors of her and Garrett's relationship began earlier this year, when the two attended the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo in May. Garrett is entering his ninth NFL season in 2025. The former No. 1 overall pick has played all eight years of his career with the Browns and signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the team in March. Late last week, Garrett made headlines when he was cited for speeding – driving 100 mph in a 60 mph speed limit zone at around 2 a.m. on Saturday. It was the eighth speeding ticket Garrett has picked up since he was drafted in 2017.

Eagles' OC Kevin Patullo indicates a greater usage for Jahan Dotson in 2025

The Eagles' new offensive coordinator plans to move Jahan Dotson around this season When Jahan Dotson was traded from Washington to Philadelphia last summer, it was a tough adjustment period. The former Commanders receiver came over in late August, long after training camp got underway, and didn't have much time to get acclimated to the offense. As a result, Dotson caught just 19 passes for 216 yards last season. Dotson saw more targets down the stretch as he gained Jalen Hurts' trust, most notably in the Super Bowl when he recorded two catches for 42 yards. In his first offseason program with the Eagles, Dotson has developed a strong rapport with Hurts as star receiver A.J. Brown remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. Ahead of Wednesday's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns, Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo spoke about his plans to utilize Dotson's skill set in 2025: 'He's a really good route runner. That's the one thing when you put the tape on or you watch him in person, his route running ability is really dynamic and I think his maturity of just being around the other guys, you can start to feel him in different ways in the offense. I think what he's shown too is you can move him around. I don't know necessarily if we knew that when we first got him, but now he's in a spot where we can put him anywhere and we feel confident. So I think his game has grown tremendously from that standpoint.' Dotson's route-running ability helped him get selected No. 16 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. Opportunities are limited in Philadelphia's star-studded offense, but these reps will have Dotson more prepared when his number is called. The Eagles declined Dotson's fifth-year option in April, as his production didn't warrant the $16.8 million price tag he would've been owed in 2026. Dotson now heads into a contract year with the opportunity to bolster his value ahead of free agency.
