What Armstead texted Warner after 49ers re-hired Saleh as DC
The band is back together with the 49ers re-hiring Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator, but one former bandmate will have to watch the show go on without him from the opposite end of the country.
Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead, who spent nine seasons in San Francisco and four with Saleh, revealed his honest reaction to the reunion.
'Fred [Warner] posted a picture with Robert Saleh [on Instagram] after he went back there, and I sent Fred a message, I said, 'Dang, I'm jealous,' ' Armstead said Thursday on 95.7 The Game's 'Steiny & Guru.' 'Saleh is one of the best coaches I've ever played for. He's truly a special coach. He brings that energy, he cares about his players, schematically, he's elite. And he has the experience. He's been around a lot of football, been in a lot of big games and coaching in big moments.'
The 49ers last week officially announced the hiring of Saleh, 45, as defensive coordinator to fill the key spot on Kyle Shanahan's coach staff.
Saleh returns to the coaching position he held from 2017 to 2020 before he landed a head-coaching job with the New York Jets. While his defensive prowess carried over to New York, leading to records and feats the organization hadn't seen prior, the team failed to reach its expectations behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Saleh ended his Jets tenure with a 20-36 record.
But Saleh endured his most success as an NFL coach with the 49ers, and Armstead explained why.
'The thing I've seen, I was with Saleh in 2017 and I've known him for a long time, is the ability as a coordinator and a coach to put out fires,' Armstead explained. 'There's going to be teams that try to attack you in new ways and you have to come up with answers. I've seen him do that for years. When all these offensive coordinators are throwing all these different schemes at him, he's been able to adjust.
'And I think that's the making of a great coach. So, I'm definitely jealous. I love Saleh. But it was great to see him go back to the Bay around some familiar faces and people that love him. So definitely happy for him.'
While Armstead now is on the East Coast with his own team rebrand in the AFC South, he surely will be rooting for Saleh and the 49ers behind closed doors. And, of course, vice versa for the beloved former Niner.

Tommy Eichenberg answers the call against 49ers
Linebacker is a weak spot on the Las Vegas Raiders' roster, where the defense is looking for players on the depth chart to separate themselves heading into the regular season. In the Raiders' preseason game last Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers, second-year pro Tommy Eichenberg answered the call. Eichenberg led Las Vegas with seven total tackles, and his impact went beyond the traditional box score. According to Pro Football Focus, the Ohio State product was the team's third-highest graded defender (77.6) and was second-best in coverage with a mark of 80.5, surrendering just nine yards when targeted. The latter is significant since that was considered his weakness coming out of college. So, let's flip on the tape and break down the 2024 fifth-round pick's performance. The Raiders run a fire zone here, where the two other linebackers (No. 33 Jamal Adams and No. 42 Matt Jones) blitz, leaving Eichenberg in the middle of the field and as the only underneath defender. Meanwhile, the 49ers run a play-action bootleg with a drag route from the outside receiver at the top of the screen and the weakside tight end working across the formation and into the flat. The offense's play call is designed to put the linebacker in conflict via a levels concept, giving him a threat behind and in front of him. However, Eichenberg does a great job of staying deep in his zone to take away the crossing route from the wide receiver, and then rallying to the tight end in the flat after the ball is thrown. Finally, he takes a good angle and shows off some closing speed to make the open-field tackle and keep this to a one-yard gain. This time, San Francisco comes out in an empty formation, forcing the linebacker to play in space as a slot corner over a wide receiver at the top of the screen. In other words, that gets a run-defending backer like Eichenberg out of his element. The 49ers try to take advantage of this matchup by running a screen to the slot receiver. However, Eichenberg is quick to read it, crashing downhill and getting his hands up to take on the block and pushing the tight end backward, who is lined up at a wide receiver position. Additionally, the outside receiver comes to block him, so the second-year pro ends up occupying and holding his ground against two players. That prevents the pass-catcher from getting up the field and allows Sam Webb (No. 27, the outside cornerback) to make the tackle short of the sticks. PFF didn't give Eichenberg as much love against the run last weekend, posting a slightly above-average 64.1 grade in that department. But he did have a few quality reps that were encouraging for his development. His ability to take on blocks was one area where he struggled as a rookie, often having a hard time getting extension to be able to make tackles. But here, the former Buckeye meets San Francisco's fullback in the B-gap with good leverage and hand placement at the point of attack to generate some knockback power and lock out the fullback. So, when the running back hits the hole, Eichenberg's able to get off the block and get involved in the tackle short of the sticks. Finally, this next play against the run doesn't have Eichenberg taking on a block, but it is a well-timed blitz to defeat the receiver's block. On top of that, the linebacker does a good job of getting flat down the line of scrimmage once he gets into the backfield to make the tackle from the backside of the play for about a one-yard gain. So far, Eichenberg has turned in a pretty good preseason. He's still a long shot to be a Week 1 starter, but he's shown improvement to be a quality backer off the bench and potentially take on a starting role down the line.

Jake Paul to face lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14
Jake Paul will face Gervonta "Tank" Davis in a boxing match on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Netflix announced Wednesday. The bout is expected to be the biggest test to date for Paul, a social media star with 28 million followers on Instagram and 21 million followers on YouTube. Paul (12-1) became a professional boxer in January 2020 and has impressed despite limited experience in the ring. He has faced criticism for his competition, however. Most of his opponents have been nonboxers — a former NBA Slam Dunk champion in Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren and Mike Perry. He beat a 59-year-old Mike Tyson, and his lone loss came to boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Paul, 28, is coming off a unanimous decision against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Davis is without question Paul's most heralded opponent. The 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion is one of the sport's top talents, amassing a 30-0-1 record. Though he stands just 5-foot-5, Davis is known for his vicious punching power and has 28 knockouts in his career. He most recently retained his belt with a majority decision draw against Lamond Roach Jr. in March. Davis' boxing career was in jeopardy after he was arrested on July 11 in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office, a misdemeanor battery charge against Davis was dropped. Paul vs. Davis is the latest boxing match promoted by Netflix as it gets more involved in live sports. Paul's bout with Tyson last November, for example, peaked at 65 million streams, according to the streaming service. Netflix is also promoting Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, and has WWE Raw and multiple NFL games on Christmas Day. Not everyone in the boxing world is happy Paul vs. Davis is happening. Ryan Garcia, a former WBC interim lightweight champion who lost to Davis in 2023, wrote on social media that "boxing is officially the WWE … integrity of the sport is getting ruined every day."
