More Selayang folk shifting towards online payment
SOME 80% of payments to Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) in March were made online, indicating widespread acceptance of the Selangor government's push towards cashless methods.
MPS president Shahman Jalaludin said RM2.33mil was collected online during the month, comprising payment for various fees.
Among the biggest contributors were assessment tax (RM1.25mil), business licences (RM245,000), stall rentals (RM292,000) and building planning permits (RM366,000).
Speaking to StarMetro after the full board meeting, Shahman said the council would continue to promote cashless payments.
'We also encourage the public, when they come to our headquarters, to pay using our kiosks.
'However, we will still maintain our physical counters as some people still prefer making payments in person,' he said.
On a related matter, Shahman said MPS had collected RM58.7mil in assessment tax as of March 31, 87% of the total amount owed.
The council had also recouped some RM3mil in assessment arrears, he added, which was one-third of the total owed.
He said MPS had issued Form E on March 1 to remind property owners with arrears to settle their outstanding amounts.
'A total of 76,414 forms were issued and the notice period expired on March 31,' he said.
'On April 11, warrants were also issued, warning errant owners that their assets would be seized if they failed to pay up.'
Like other local councils, Shahman said MPS, too, regularly sent out a special taskforce on weekends to remind errant owners to pay up.
'Compared to sending reminders and putting messages on noticeboards, we find the taskforce has been more effective at getting arrears settled.'
Separately, he said the MPS Customer Day event had been well received.
Held on the first Friday of each month, the event enables residents, hawkers and developers, among others, to highlight their concerns to MPS.
Though often held at its headquarters, it would take place in other parts of Selayang this year, Shahman said.
'We plan on having three sessions outside MPS. Hopefully, we can get more people to show up.'

Traders at the temporary market site in Jalan SK6/1 complain of reduced business. — Photos: SAMUEL ONG/The Star AFTER being relocated to a temporary site over two years ago, traders of Pasar Awam SK10 (SK10 Public Market) in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, are struggling to make ends meet. Herb seller Ooi Kim Hock, 53, told StarMetro that customers kept away from their temporary trading site in Jalan SK6/1 due to insufficient parking space. 'My customers often have to park by the roadside and then get fined by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) enforcement officers. Ooi says his business has dropped by 70%. 'This has caused my business to drop by about 70% compared to when I was trading at the old market,' he said when met at the temporary site, located about 1.5km away from the old market at Jalan SK10/3. Ooi also claimed that he had to pay higher rental at the new site, further burdening him financially. Another trader, identified only as Yew Lian, said some stalls had gone out of business after the move to the temporary site. 'Four to five stalls shut down last year. 'I heard that four or five more are on the brink of shutting down. 'We have lost a lot of income due to the lack of parking space. 'My daily income is only about RM300, which is a 70% drop from what I used to make at the old market,' she said, adding that she sold poultry from 6am to 3pm daily. It was previously reported that traders were relocated to the temporary site in April 2023 to allow the old market to be demolished and a new one to be built under a three-year project. A visit by StarMetro on Tuesday found the old market site having overgrown grass and rubbish strewn around a partially torn-down structure. There was no construction work seen at the site. Pasar Awam SK10 in Jalan SK10/3 in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, is still being cordoned off without any redevelopment over the last two years. A May 26 StarMetro article titled 'Markets potential for tourism as cultural landmarks', reported that 10 architectural firms had won prizes in a design competition held for SK10 Public Market that was set for a RM12mil redevelopment. The competition was a joint effort between MBSJ and Malaysian Institute of Architects, with the winning firms to be appointed as consultants for the upgrading project. The Federation of Association of Serdang general secretary Chuah Hooi Hong called for MBSJ to provide a clear schedule on the market upgrade. 'Months have passed since the results of the design competition were announced. 'When will the tender process start and how long will it take to finish the upgrade? 'The traders cannot wait any longer, they need to survive,' he said. MBSJ had not responded to queries regarding the matter as at press time.

CEKD acquires printing firm for RM3mil
PETALING JAYA: CEKD Bhd is acquiring the entire equity interest in printing firm Shin Fuji Labels Sdn Bhd for RM3mil. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the die-cutting solutions provider said it had acquired Shin Fuji from the latter's shareholders, Yap Sing and Yap Teng Wui. 'The proposed acquisition is in line with the company and its subsidiaries' principal activity of manufacturing of die-cutting moulds and trading of related consumables, tools and accessories and would provide an opportunity for the group to venture into the label printing industry. 'Through this proposed acquisition, the group expects to tap into new customer segments and growth opportunities.'

Cabinet to discuss paper on Bukit Merah water transfer project, says Perak MB
TELUK INTAN: The Cabinet paper on a water transfer project in Bukit Merah to address the critical water shortage problem in northern Perak will be brought to this week's Cabinet meeting. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the paper took into account requests and comments from the state government because the water supply is the state's right and knows the best course of action for the project. "The implementation process also needs to give priority to contractors in the state. We have decided that the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry should agree to the collaboration of the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) and Gamuda Bhd as implementers, taking into account the involvement of local small contractors," he said after the Customer Day programme at Teluk Intan Municipal Council Hall in Langkap here on Monday (Aug 11). Saarani said the RM6.2bil water transfer project from Sungai Perak to Bukit Merah, which was implemented through a joint venture between PKNPk and Gamuda, would provide economic benefits to the people of the state. According to Saarani, the project alignment was determined as a result of a series of workshops involving state government representatives to ensure its implementation meets the state's water needs. He said the project would benefit the agricultural irrigation system in northern Perak and meet the water needs of the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (Kigip) in the Kerian district. "I hope this project can be expedited because we want to solve the problem of agricultural irrigation in the north and help with Kigip's water needs. "If there is a surplus (of water), then we will consider selling water to Penang," he said. Last July, Gamuda Bhd through a joint venture with PKNPk was given a mandate by the state government to design, build and operate a water treatment and distribution facility located in Kerian. The project will supply treated water to Kigip while the surplus will be channelled to Penang. It will be implemented through privatisation, where the agreement is expected to be finalised within 90 days, with a minimum concession period of 40 years and is expected to begin operating by 2030. – Bernama
