Delhi Chief Minister backs bill to control private school fees and boost accountability
Fines for unauthorised fee hikes will range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, with penalties doubling if payments are delayed. The Bill requires schools to justify any proposed fee hike by presenting evidence related to location, infrastructure, operational expenditure, and teaching quality.Parents will have the authority to approve or reject these proposals, giving them direct influence in the decision-making process.'This Bill is a shield for the dreams of Delhi's children,' Gupta said. 'No one will be allowed to put a price on their aspirations.'Gupta stated that the draft was prepared after consulting education experts and parent groups. She said the intent was to create a balance between safeguarding parental interests and allowing schools to maintain their operations effectively.Criticising the previous AAP government and earlier administrations, Gupta alleged that neither AAP nor Congress took concrete steps to regulate school fees in the past 27 years. 'If education was really your priority, why didn't you bring a legal framework earlier?' she said. The legislation also brings schools under stricter scrutiny regardless of their land allotment history. Authorities will have the mandate to inspect records and accounts to ensure compliance. The Delhi government expects the law to address longstanding complaints from parents about steep annual hikes, especially in schools located in prime areas. The next step will involve framing rules for the Bill's implementation and setting up mechanisms for parents to file complaints. For now, the government maintains that the law is designed to bring both transparency and accountability into a sector where financial decisions have often gone unchecked.- Ends

Karnataka govt. will safeguard interests of people displaced due to dam projects: Madhu Bangarappa
Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa, who is also the Minister in charge of Shivamogga district, has said that the Karnataka government will safeguard the interests of people displaced due to the Sharavathi dam project, and of the bagair hukum cultivators of the district. Speaking to reporters after hoisting the national flag in Shivamogga on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day on Friday, the Minister said that the government would not evict any cultivator. However, he admitted that in a couple of cases, the officials erred in their action with regard to clearing the encroachment. Mr. Bangarappa stated that the Congress party, before the Assembly polls, had promised the people of Shivamogga that it would resolve the issues concerning people displaced by dam projects. Since the party came to power, the government had been making efforts to fulfil its promise, which include taking the Centre into confidence and appointing an efficient advocate to present the case in the Supreme Court, he said. 'Almost 80% of the work has been completed. The farmers will get the rights over the land they have been cultivating,' he added. On the issue of improving the facilities at McGann Hospital in Shivamogga, the Minister said that he had spoken to the Ministers concerned, and appealed for additional facilities, including a trauma care centre. He said that he would make efforts to develop the hospital into a super-speciality one, as hundreds of patients from Shivamogga and neighbouring districts visit the hospital every day. Besides that, the Minister said that the government was planning to construct a district office complex close to the KSRTC bus stand in the city. The people should get access to all important offices at one place, he added. Earlier in the day, Mr. Bangarappa hoisted the national flag at Nehru Stadium. As many as 29 platoons of policemen, home guards, municipal workers, school children, and NCC cadets took part in the parade. The Minister felicitated meritorious students and achievers in different fields at the event. Students from Nandan Education Trust, Police Public School, and Ananya High School presented dance-drama shows on the occasion. Legislators S.N. Channabasappa, Dhananjaya Sarji, and Balkhees Banu; officers including Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade, Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar, and Zilla Panchayat CEO N. Hemanth; and others were present on the occasion.

'Facing Love Jihad Threat': Assam Chief Minister's Independence Day Message
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that 'illegal infiltration' - seen by many as a reference to Bengali-speaking Muslims - poses an "existential threat" to the northeastern state's indigenous communities. Mr Sarma also claimed Assam is engaged in 'a battle to keep the identity of the indigenous people alive'. "We are facing everything from love jihad to land jihad," the BJP leader declared during his Independence Day speec, calling on Assamese communities to 'defend' their heritage. "The spirit of the tricolour brought people together as we celebrate the country's 79th Independence Day... in an atmosphere of peace and backed by solid progress achieved over the last few years. I urge everyone to always uphold the pride of the nation," Mr Sarma said on X, declaring Assam had 'compromised with infiltrators' for 78 years and allowed 'certain demographic changes' to take root. The bureaucracy under previous governments have a lot to answer for - as to how such a mind boggling scale of encroachment by infiltrators was allowed in Assam. #IndependenceDay — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) August 15, 2025 "If we remain silent, in the next decade we will lose our identity, our land, and everything. Even the Kamakhya Temple hills could be encroached if we don't react now," he warned. Appealing to indigenous residents to not sell any land to 'unknown buyers', he said his government had granted land rights to indigenous people to strengthen community ownership. "We have already compromised in many districts. As a proud Assamese, I am not ready to compromise anymore. Our fight now will inspire the next generation to keep our identity alive." The Chief Minister also accused some of 'surrendering to infiltrators'. "To stop them, we have declared war on their aggression. I promise that we will evict the unknown people from every piece of grazing land, tribal belt and government land," he said. "These unknown people are advancing to capture political power now, after almost capturing economic power. They have captured every sphere of the construction sector." The Chief Minister's sharp remarks echo those made this time last year, when he declared he would not let Bengali-speaking Muslims take over the state. Mr Sarma further declared 'I am not in the competition for minority votes', a remark the Congress said was a communal statement. Speaking in the Assembly after the opposition's adjournment motion on key issues - including the targeting of Bengali Muslims, or Miyas, in upper Assam's Sivasagar district - Mr Sarma dared his rivals, "I will take sides. What can you do? Will not let Miya Muslims take over Assam." The remarks came two days after Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi accused the BJP of trying to recreate the 2002 Gujarat riots in Assam. Mr Gogoi's comments followed reports that some organisations had threatened Muslims from Upper Assam to leave the administrative division. Assam will vote in what is likely to be a highly-charged Assembly election in March-April 2026.
