NISHINOMIYA (Kyodo) -- Hiroto Saiki threw a four-hit shutout as the Central League-leading Hanshin Tigers beat the DeNA BayStars 2-0 on Saturday in their first game after the All-Star break.
Saiki (8-5) scattered four singles without a walk in a 116-pitch gem at Koshien Stadium, striking out nine in his second shutout of the season.
Yusuke Oyama plated the opening run with two outs and runners on the corners in the first inning, singling to center off Anthony Kay (5-6).
The lefty regrouped to put up zeros but only until Teruaki Sato pulled his first-pitch four-seamer to right for a solo shot with one out in the sixth, with the Tigers' cleanup hitter going deep for the CL-leading 26th time.
Kay allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over six innings as the BayStars lost against the Tigers for the fourth straight time.
In other action, the Pacific League-leading Nippon Ham Fighters beat the Lotte Marines 5-0 behind three perfect innings from first-round draft pick and debutant Reo Shibata followed by six innings of three-hit relief from Drew VerHagen (2-2).

Baseball: Tongu's walk-off homer caps Orix's comeback victory

OSAKA (Kyodo) -- Yuma Tongu hit a walk-off three-run homer to cap a four-run ninth inning and give the Orix Buffaloes a 4-2 victory over the Nippon Ham Fighters on Friday. Tongu's one-out "sayonara" blast to left, off Takayuki Kato (7-4), came after the Buffaloes started the bottom of the ninth with three straight singles to pull within a run at Kyocera Dome Osaka. Orix reliever Raiku Katayama (1-0) worked two scoreless innings after Anderson Espinoza struck out 10 in seven solid innings. Nippon Ham starter Kato took a shutout into the ninth before Orix's dramatic rally. Among Friday's other games, Kensuke Kondo homered in the opening frame to back a seven-inning start from Naoyuki Uwasawa (7-6) as the Pacific League-leading SoftBank Hawks beat the Rakuten Eagles 3-1.

Baseball: Maki, Sano spark BayStars to 14-1 battering of Swallows

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Shugo Maki belted a three-run, first-inning homer and Keita Sano launched two solo bombs for the DeNA BayStars in Thursday's 14-1 demolition of the Yakult Swallows at Yokohama Stadium. The Japan Series champions recorded season highs in both runs and hits, with 21, as they snapped a four-game skid since the All-Star break against the Central League's bottom side. Maki's 16th home run of the season, an ice-breaking big fly over left field off top rookie prospect Yuto Nakamura (1-2), was part of a four-run first inning for a BayStars lineup that had been struggling to score early in games. "I'm glad I could convert the chance when it came my way," said the Samurai Japan slugger, who finished 3-for-4. "We've been giving up the early runs lately, so all I was thinking about was scoring first." Sano made it 5-0 with his opposite field blast in the second and extended the margin to 11-0 when he led off the eighth with a long shot to right. Tatsuo Ebina followed with a two-run homer as part of his three-RBI outing. Kentaro Taira (2-2) got the win after striking out seven and scattering four hits over six shutout innings.

Darvish Sharp for 7 Innings, Sheets Homers and the Padres Beat the Mets 5-0 for 3-Game Sweep

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Yu Darvish pitched seven impressive innings for his first win of the season, Gavin Sheets hit a two-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the NL East-leading New York Mets 5-0 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Manny Machado added a two-run, bases-loaded single for the Padres, who won their fifth straight game as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Slugger Juan Soto was out of the lineup for the Mets a day after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot. Darvish (1-3), who turns 39 on Aug. 16, held the Mets to two hits, struck out seven and walked none in his fifth start. After allowing Mark Vientos' single with one out in the first, Darvish retired the next 13 batters. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from mid-March until making his season debut on July 7. Darvish got a nice ovation as he headed to the dugout after pitching a perfect seventh in what became the Padres' big league-high 15th shutout. It was Darvish's 111th big league win, which, combined with his 93 in Japan, allowed him to break out of a tie with Hiroki Kuroda and take sole possession of first place on the combined all-time list. Sheets' homer off Clay Holmes (9-6) came after Jose Iglesias reached on shortstop Francisco Lindor's throwing error with two outs in the third. Sheets then drove an 0-2 pitch an estimated 427 feet to right-center, his 15th. Holmes retired the first two batters in the second before allowing a single by Martin Maldonado, hitting Fernando Tatis Jr. on the top of the left hand with a pitch and walking Luis Arraez. Machado then singled to left for a 2-0 lead. Machado hit a three-run homer in a 7-1 win on Tuesday night. Holmes lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs — two earned — and eight hits. The Mets were swept in a series of three or more games at San Diego for the first time since 2008.
