Defamation case: Delhi HC refuses to accept TMC MP Saket Gokhale's sealed cover apology
The Delhi High Court has rejected Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale's sealed apology in a contempt case filed by Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri, citing his delay in complying with the court's order to issue a public apology and pay Rs 50 lakh in damages.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court has refused to accept Trinamool Congress MP
Saket Gokhale
's apology in a sealed cover in a contempt plea filed by former diplomat
Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri
, noting that he had delayed compliance with its earlier order directing him to apologise publicly and pay Rs 50 lakh in damages.
In its May 9 order, Justice Anish Dayal directed Gokhale to issue a
public apology
within two weeks — both on his X (formerly Twitter) account and in a prominent English daily — as originally decreed in July 2024. The court said it would not wait for the outcome of a potential appeal, remarking that the MP had 'tarried, lingered and procrastinated' in complying with the court's verdict.
'There is no reason why the court should take the apology in a sealed cover and then wait for the result of an appeal...
the respondent has simply tarried, lingered and procrastinated,' the court noted.
The court pointed out that despite more than 10 months having passed since the judgment, Gokhale had not secured any order staying the implementation of the verdict. It also highlighted that the statutory time to challenge the July 2024 ruling had lapsed, and his later plea seeking a recall was dismissed on May 2 with a detailed order.

'The apology as directed by the judgment/decree shall be published within the next two weeks, in the manner decreed,' the court ordered, adding that Gokhale was a parliamentarian and a public figure who was expected to abide by judicial orders.
The matter stems from a defamation suit filed in 2021 by Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri, a former Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations and wife of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
She accused Gokhale of posting defamatory and unverified allegations about her financial dealings concerning a property she owns in Geneva.
On July 1, 2024, the Delhi High Court had restrained Gokhale from making further such posts, ordered him to publish a formal apology, and directed him to pay Rs 50 lakh in damages — to be deposited within eight weeks. The apology was to remain pinned on his X account for six months.
Gokhale later moved the court to recall the judgment and condone a delay of over 180 days in filing the appeal. Both requests were dismissed. On April 24 this year, a coordinate bench of the high court ordered attachment of a portion of Gokhale's MP salary to enforce the damages.
In her contempt plea, Puri alleged that Gokhale had wilfully and deliberately defied the court's directions. Her counsel also pointed out that Gokhale continued to post defamatory remarks on social media, targeting not just her but also the court.
The court had earlier observed that Gokhale's 'roving allegations' were 'extremely irresponsible' and appeared to target BJP leader Hardeep Singh Puri without any verification.
The court said it would consider the question of wilful disobedience in detail after hearing both sides further.
Puri, who initially sought Rs 5 crore in damages (to be donated to the PMCARES fund), had also asked for the removal of Gokhale's defamatory tweets.

Tribal villagers happy for sanctioning road
Paderu (ASR district): Tribal residents of Kalyanagummi village in Gumma Panchayat, Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, expressed heartfelt gratitude to district Collector AS Dinesh Kumar for approving the long-pending road construction between Kalyanagummi and Neredlapudi village in Devarapalli mandal. The approval was granted during a special district-level past committee meeting chaired by the Collector on Friday, bringing cheer to the residents, who had long struggled with poor connectivity. In a touching gesture, villagers stood in a line with folded hands, offering their thanks to the Collector and Tribal Welfare Engineering Officer Venu Gopal Rao for addressing their decades-old plea. Until now, the villagers of Kalyanagummi had to take a lengthy and inconvenient route via Damaku in Devarapalli mandal of Vizianagaram district to reach nearby Gummu village. Recognising their plight, former ITDA PO Abhishek had sanctioned Rs One crore in July 2024 for gravel road construction. However, due to pending forest department clearances, the project had not commenced. Following protests from the villagers over the delay, the Collector convened an urgent meeting with the forest and other concerned departments to resolve the issue. With the necessary permissions now granted, construction is expected to begin soon. CPM district committee member K Govind Rao and tribal rights leader Rajarao also thanked the officials for understanding the difficulties faced by the tribal population and for taking timely action to approve the project.

AP partners with WEF for energy centre in Amaravati
Vijayawada: In a significant move to establish Andhra Pradesh as a global hub for innovation and sustainable development, the state government partnered with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to launch 'WEF-AP Centre for Energy and Cyber Resilience' in Amaravati. This initiative aligns with the government's ambitious 'Swarna Andhra Vision 2047'. A Government Order issued on Thursday formalized the establishment of this centre, which will operate under the WEF's global Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) Network. Notably, it will be India's first thematic C4IR centre and will focus on two critical areas: energy transition and green industries in collaboration with WEF's Centre for Energy and Materials (CENMAT) and AI-led digital transformation and cyber security, in partnership with WEF's Centre for Cyber Security. This initiative stems from high-level meetings with the WEF in Davos and is poised to position Amaravati as India's leading center for green energy, sustainability, and cyber security. The project is being spearheaded by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, with the overarching goal of enhancing AP's international profile and attracting significant investments in clean energy, Artificial Intelligence, and digital infrastructure. The centre's key objectives include elevating AP's global standing, fostering international partnerships, supporting the growth of green industries, enhancing cyber security capabilities, and running pilot projects in clean energy, smart grids, and the application of AI in sectors such as agriculture and governance. Furthermore, it aims at upskilling the workforce in cyber security and emerging technologies and connecting the state with prominent global platforms like the WEF's annual meeting at Davos. The state government has allocated Rs 36 crore to support the Centre's operations for three years. It will initially function from Vijayawada or Amaravati and will be governed by a high-level committee chaired by IT Minister Nara Lokesh.
