Teacher, absent for nine months, found dead
JOHOR BARU: A teacher, who was absent from school for over nine months, has been found dead at her house here.
The body of the 39-year-old woman was found by her neighbour on Thursday, several weeks after she is believed to have died.
She was last seen alive by her neighbour on May 18.
'The body was discovered by a neighbour who noticed a foul smell coming from the house, said Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan.
'The cause of death could not be ascertained because the body was too decomposed,' he said.
He said the woman, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, had not reported for work since Sept 24 last year.
The school had tried to reach out to her several times but she had not been home when colleagues came calling.
ACP Kumarasan said the case has been classified as sudden death and no criminal elements have been found.
'We are now identifying the next of kin of the woman,' he said, adding that the teacher was not married and lived alone.
On Saturday, a Chinese primary school posted a heartfelt tribute to the teacher, identified as Lo Kwang Fong (pic), on its Facebook page after learning of her passing.
'After days of relentless investigation by the police, it has been confirmed that our dearly respected teacher has tragically passed away at the age of 39.
'The devastating news has brought immense grief to all. Teacher Lo was a role model who was gentle, humble, dedicated, and well-loved by her peers.
'She poured her heart into the field of education, always upholding a spirit of care for her students and a strong sense of responsibility,' read the post in Mandarin.
In the same post, the school also appealed for help in locating the woman's next of kin, including an aunt believed to be living in Singapore and other relatives in Taiping, Perak.
'It is understood that teacher Lo was the only child in her family and that both her parents have passed away.
'She may have an aunt in Singapore and relatives in Taiping,' the post added.

This was when another netizen – presumably a lawyer – sought the deceased's contact details to offer legal services to his family. One commenter berated the poster for using 'race' and 'nationality' to stir emotions. Calling it 'rage bait' (as if the driver had purposely wanted to ram into the motorcyclist), she counselled that perhaps the poster should drop 'news' from its moniker – MYNEWSHUB – arguing that such was gutter journalism. Echoing this sentiment, another commenter contended that such headlines could create suspicions or wrong perception. Imagine if the headline had read that it was a 'Malay driver who killed the motorcyclist'. Unfortunately, there were enough who lapped up such quasi-racist reporting. One netizen hoped the victim's family will take civil action against the driver. Reasonable advice but one which was signed off with a racial slur. The government of the day lacked the political will to take necessary action against foreign nationals, argued another netizen. Again, a racial slur was used. There was also unfounded feeling among some that Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook is biased towards foreign nationals, in particular those from Chinese-speaking countries. Some were just unable to hide their racist tendencies at all, side-stepping the accident completely. Regardless of the race of the person at fault, quite a few netizens did point out that that particular stretch of road was dangerous and prone to accidents. Make absolutely no mistake – it is a tragic accident. But an 'accident' is what it is. People need to stop framing everything in racial terms. Would it had been reported similarly if the tables were turned where a Malay driver had killed a Chinese national? China security office flexes new power with Hong Kong probe
The raids show Hong Kong's clampdown on dissent is still expanding, five years after President Xi Jinping imposed a security law on the city. -- PHOTO: REUTERS HONG KONG/BEIJING (Bloomberg): Beijing's national security office in Hong Kong carried out its first known joint operation with city officials, marking an expansion of China's direct law enforcement in the financial hub. Local authorities on Thursday night announced they were investigating a case of alleged foreign collusion with China's Office for Safeguarding National Security. The office interviewed six people after requesting the support of Hong Kong police using new powers granted last month, according to a statement. Hong Kong security officials searched the homes of six suspects, as well as the office of an organization, and seized evidence including bank documents and devices. The individuals were also required to surrender their travel documents. The suspects are accused of "collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security' from November 2020 to June 2024, the government said. The statement didn't reveal their identities. The raids show Hong Kong's clampdown on dissent is still expanding, five years after President Xi Jinping imposed a security law on the city to cement Communist Party control. Hong Kong officials this week banned a video game for the first time under security legislation, accusing it of advocating armed revolution. That came days after imprisoned former activist Joshua Wong was hit with a fresh security charge. The one-time poster child of the city's pro-democracy protest movement was due for release in early 2027, having served two-thirds of his current 56-month prison term. In response to a Bloomberg News inquiry, a spokesman for the Hong Kong government said it "strongly opposes to unfounded allegations and slandering remarks against the joint operation' without specifying the offending statements. No one has been arrested in the ongoing investigation, the person said in an emailed reply. Fast-Tracked The joint operation this week marked the first application of the Safeguarding National Security Regulation, which was fast-tracked into law to facilitate Chinese security personnel. While the Beijing-imposed security law allows mainland officials to assume jurisdiction in certain cases, the new measures bolstered that legal framework for China's security apparatus to operate directly within Hong Kong's common law system. The May 13 legislation, which took effect before being review by lawmakers, requires Hong Kong government departments and civil servants to provide "all necessary and reasonable assistance, facilitation, support, backing and protection' to the Chinese security officers upon request. The new rules also criminalize acts that could impede the China-run office's work, including disclosing details of its investigations, with penalties extending up to seven years in prison and fines.
