AGC denies claims Anwar's pardon was invalid
In a statement, the AGC said this was because Anwar had been granted a full pardon by the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, which convened on May 16, 2018.
'The AGC affirms that the 51st Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 11 am at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
'The meeting was chaired by His Majesty the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, and was also attended, among others, by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself, who was the Prime Minister at the time,' the AGC stated.
According to the statement, based on the advice of the Pardons Board, Sultan Muhammad V consented to the granting of a full pardon to Anwar, along with his immediate release, effective from the date of the Pardons Board meeting.
The statement added that for the purpose of the meeting, the Attorney General had also provided a written opinion on the matter in accordance with Clause (9), Article 42 of the Federal Constitution for the Pardons Board's consideration.
Therefore, the AGC refuted the remarks made by Dr Mahathir, in which the former Prime Minister publicly claimed that the pardon was invalid as it did not go through a proper Pardons Board proceeding.
In this connection, the AGC views the matter seriously as it involves constitutional and institutional interests.
'The AGC also emphasises that any statement that could mislead the public regarding the decision of the Pardons Board is completely inappropriate,' the statement said.

RM5 bln recovered from corruption shows Madani Govt resolve, says Anwar
Anwar says the achievement demonstrates the government's firm commitment to anti-corruption efforts despite scepticism and criticism from certain quarters. – Bernama photo IPOH (Aug 16): The recovery of about RM5 billion in illicit gains from corruption over the past one to two years reflects the efficiency and determination of the Madani Government in combating graft, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said the achievement demonstrates the government's firm commitment to anti-corruption efforts despite scepticism and criticism from certain quarters. 'Some people make cynical remarks about governance and our strong anti-corruption drive. Let me share how much we've managed to recover in just one to two years — across all agencies, from politicians to ministries, immigration to customs. 'How much? We've already seized between RM4 billion and RM5 billion from corrupt activities,' he said when launching the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral development project here today. Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Anwar stressed that good governance must remain a core principle in all development projects to ensure efficiency and integrity. 'This includes every aspect – training, sophistication and our capability to master artificial intelligence. I hope the Ipoh Sentral project can serve as a model example,' he said. He urged all parties, including the Menteri Besar, Ipoh City Council and the relevant ministries, to re-examine the project's governance mechanisms. 'Even if the plans are already in place, see if they can be further improved. If we succeed, Ipoh Sentral could become one of the best holistic development models for the nation,' he said. – Bernama Anwar Ibrahim corruption governance Ipoh Sentral recovery

Jalur Gemilang: Avoid being vigilantes, leave it to the authorities, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been reminded not to resort to vigilantism or unlawful actions against any party committing offences linked to the Jalur Gemilang flag, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. All matters involving investigations, prosecutions and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, Fahmi said following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on Friday (Aug 15). "Don't act as the police, lawyers and judge (as) it's wrong, leave it to the police to investigate, leave it to the AGC to prosecute and leave it to the courts to make a decision,' he said after the launch of the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu here on Saturday (Aug 16). Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof also attended the launch. He said he was given to understand that there were individuals called up by the police after a rally that was held to 'teach' certain parties, but further action will be left to the authorities. Fahmi also invited Malaysians to play their part in resolving any issues related to the Jalur Gemilang without resorting to any provocation. "As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it back up. If it has faded, we replace it with a new one. If it's improperly flown, we correct it with our own hands. "Let's not sneer, curse, or act in an uncivilised manner as we need to show our patriotic spirit during the national month and at the same time, we need to remind one another,' he said. About the programme launched today, Fahmi said that it included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, involving 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), the National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club; the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community. Other side events for the programme include the Safe Internet campaign aimed at creating awareness about ethical Internet use and practices among teacher training institute students. Jalur Gemilang kits were also handed to IPG senior management and representatives of 12 Madani Communities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya in conjunction with the '1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang' initiative.- Bernama
