A drunk woman picked up and took home a seagull – only to find out later that it had bird flu.
Erin Punton had been on a night out with friends and was returning home when she spotted the bird outside a pub.
Inebriated, the 22-year-old from Ashington, Northumberland, scooped up the seagull and carried it home.
An intoxicated Erin had filmed herself with the seagull tucked under her arm while singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse.
In the clip, she said: 'He's a beauty.
'He actually wants to stop in my room and everything but I've got nowhere for him.'
The giant seagull appeared unfazed by the sudden attention as it was carried around like royalty.
She woke up the next morning with no recollection of the night before and was shocked to find the bird flapping about in her living room.
After taking the seagull to the vet, she 'felt sick' when they told her it had bird flu.
She promptly bleached her entire home after finding out the bird was infected.
Bird flu, or avian flu, is an infectious type of influenza that spreads among birds.
It can affect humans in rare cases, by being transmitted through touching infected birds, bedding and preparing or eating sick poultry.
Avian flu symptoms in humans include a very high temperature or feeling hot or shivery, aching muscles and headaches.
The last case of confirmed bird flu was confirmed in captive birds at a premises near Tow Law, Bishop Auckland in County Durham.
Erin said: 'I saw the bird outside Wetherspoons and managed to pick him up without even a thought. More Trending
'I don't even know what made me pick him up.
'I put him in my sitting room with a blanket. When I woke up in the morning, I'd forgotten and he was just floating around the sitting room.
'I dropped him off at the vets the next day in a box and was told he had bird flu.
'I felt sick and bleached my whole house.'

Shocking photo reveals 'putrid' melon-sized hairball removed from teen's stomach

When Jodie Collins' daughter began complanining of stomach issues, the mum put it down to a gluten intolerance. But it turned out that 14-year-old Erin actually had a giant hair ball in her stomach — measuring 8.3in wide, which is roughly the size of a melon. 'They're not sure how long it was there for,' Jodie, 48, says. 'I suspect it was years looking at the size of it. 'It took up pretty much the whole of her stomach.' When Erin had initially complained of pain back in November 2024, tests for intolerances came back normal, but over time her symptoms worsened. 'She was suffering with really bad stomach cramps for a good six months,' Jodie, from Newquay, explains. 'I thought she could be lactose or gluten intolerant.' The doctors struggled to pinpoint the problem and Jodie became increasingly concerned for her daughter. 'The pain was really sporadic but when it came, it was really bad and she had to be off school. 'I pushed it with the doctor and they referred her for an ultrasound but that didn't pick up anything.' With her daughter continuing to experience more pain, Jodie had had enough, and in May 2025, she took her daughter to the hospital for further tests. An MRI scan found a hard mass in her stomach, which doctors suspected was in fact a hairball — known medically as a trichobezoar — swallowed hair that accumulated in the stomach or intestines, primarily caused by the habitual eating of hair. Erin was rushed to Bristol Children's Hospital where surgeons spent five hours removing the hairball, which had left her anaemic and suffering with multiple nutritional issues. 'The surgeons said the smell was unbelievable,' Jodie said. 'I'd imagine it was like your worst plughole. He said it was putrid and one of the biggest they'd ever dealt with. 'They were really grateful when they went in that it hadn't gone into her intestines, as that would've been really complex.' Because of how large the hairball was, Erin wasn't digesting her food properly, so surgeons drained her stomach, which meant she couldn't eat for five days. The teen was also given a personalised vitamin and mineral food bag to help replenish the nutrients her body had been unable to ingest. 'It was much more serious than I'd ever anticipated,' Jodie added. 'She would've collapsed eventually.' Jodie also says she didn't realise her daughter was habitual hair eater. 'As a baby I used to bottle feed her and she would grab my hair and twist it,' Jodie recalled. 'She's always been really tactile and played with hair, but I've never seen her put her hair in her mouth, which is why it was shocking to me. 'The surgeon said she could be doing it in her sleep without even realising. She twirls her hair a lot.' After 10 days recovering in hospital, Erin was able to go home, but her stomach may remain oversized for years. More Trending The ordeal has left Jodie intent on spreading awareness of the dangers of hair eating. 'We've now bought her one of those bonnets to sleep in just in case she's doing it in her sleep,' she said. 'Look at getting kids who twirl their hair fidget toys or something to break that cycle, or if it's really bad, then apparently CBT therapy can be good for breaking hair-twirling. Myleene Klass saves stranger's life while volunteering at Brighton Pride

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Myleene Klass has praised the 'awe-inspiring' St John's Ambulance after she saved a man's life at Brighton Pride. As the Sugababes sang their headlining set at Preston Park at the weekend, the presenter burst into action behind the scenes. In a clip posted to social media, Myleene, 47, shared 'You can probably hear the Sugababes are on in the background, and I've just helped save a life.' The former Hear'Say star has been an ambassador for the charity since March 2024 and was volunteering over Pride weekend when she helped the festival-goer. Myleene had to perform a 'jaw thrust' as part of a first response unit, which is a technique designed to clear someone's airways. The move involves lifting the lower jaw forward, displacing the tongue and helping them breathe again, although she was unable to give any more details. 'I cannot divulge what happened with the patient, what the circumstances are but what I can say is I am utterly blown away and just to have been a small part of it as well,' she said. 'I actually just had to do the procedure that is known as a jaw thrust – that gives you an indication as to how serious the scenario was. The patient is on their way to the hospital right now.' Myleene first got involved with St John's Ambulance in 2021 with their Ask Me campaign and has volunteered over the years after being trained by the team. 'It was honestly awe-inspiring seeing how St John Ambulance operated. We have doctors and paramedics,' she shared. 'Everyone is here. Everyone just did their bit.' In her caption, she continued to praise the 'extensive professional expertise' of the volunteers, calling them 'exceptional'. 'You said afterwards you were 'just doing your jobs' but as SJA volunteers, that's not entirely true,' Myleene wrote. 'You were following a calling on your 'day off' which saved a life and immeasurable heartache for the patient's family and friends.' More Trending The Sugababes headlined the Sunday night at Preston Park, bringing hits like About You Now and Push the Button. Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Siobhan Donaghy reunited under the band name a few years ago and have performed at the likes of TRNSMT, Kendall Calling and Glastonbury since. None other than Mariah Carey also took to the stage for 'Britain's biggest Pride event' after being announced as the headliner in 2020 but the entire festival was axed as Covid lockdown began.
