7 from Punjab held for attacking locals with swords in Pauri after being asked not to create nuisance

The incident occurred late Tuesday night near a petrol pump along the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. The accused were arrested on Wednesday while attempting to flee toward Rudraprayag and were intercepted at a checkpost.
Police said the accused have been identified as Jaskaran Singh (30), Gurpreet Singh (24), Jashandeep Singh (18), Charanpreet Singh (23), Jaskan Singh (26), Sukhpreet Singh (23), and Ramandeep Singh (29)—all residents of Punjab, travelling on five Bullet motorcycles.
Circle officer (Srinagar) Anuj Kumar said the altercation began when some locals sitting near the petrol pump objected to the noise from the bikes.
"Complainant Pawan Uniyal, who was among the youths attacked by the accused, said he and his friends were sitting near the petrol pump when the bikers began making noise by throttling their motorcycles. When Uniyal and his friends asked them to stop, the accused attacked them with sharp weapons, including swords.
The locals fled to save themselves, but the accused chased and thrashed them before fleeing the spot," said Kumar.
Following the incident, other locals gathered at the scene, demanding strict action. Police teams were quickly formed to track the accused.
"Taking the matter seriously, teams were dispatched, and all seven were arrested near Jawari bypass in Rudraprayag. They were booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder). Police also seized their five motorcycles and the swords used in the attack. The crowd was pacified with the assurance that strict legal action would be taken," Kumar added.

Panaji: In a shift from its usual methods, Goa Police has begun using social media platforms to eliminate confusion, empower citizens with knowledge of the law, and strengthen confidence in the criminal justice system. This initiative aims to educate the public about the new laws implemented in the country. On Saturday, Goa Police launched a new social media awareness series to inform citizens about the transition from the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Crime branch superintendent of police (SP) Rahul Gupta said the campaign will use creative awareness posts and reels to present the changes in a simple yet engaging way. The posts will be published in both English and Konkani, ensuring that legal awareness reaches every section of society. 'Citizens are encouraged to follow the official channels of Goa Police to stay updated and spread this important awareness,' Gupta said. 'Why is this necessary? The criminal justice system of India underwent a historic transformation with the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.' Gupta noted that the changes are not limited to renumbering of provisions but include simplification of laws, speedy justice through time-bound trials, zero FIR, e-FIR, forensic-based investigation, gender-sensitive provisions, use of scientific and electronic evidence, and greater transparency. 'Popularising the new laws ensures that citizens are not confused when familiar IPC sections like 420 (cheating), 302 (murder), or 376 (rape) are now replaced by BNS sections 318, 103, and 64 respectively,' the SP said. He emphasised that victims, witnesses, and accused persons must be informed of their rights under the new framework, such as the right to know the reason for arrest, free legal aid, time-bound investigation, and protection of identity. 'Public confidence is built in the justice delivery system, reinforcing that the reforms are aimed at justice for people, not merely punishment,' Gupta said. TOI reported earlier that in an initiative without precedent, Goa Police are putting aside grey, bureaucratic warnings about cybercrimes and have turned to vivid content in vogue with the internet generation: Reels and memes, and droll comics-style narratives. Goa Police will engage influencers to develop and produce a minimum of 100 unique digital content pieces, including reels, videos, memes, and carousels. 6 women assault lady cop at Fatorda, booked
Margao : Six women were booked for creating a disturbance and assaulting a police officer at Fatorda police station on Thursday, following the arrest of a man in connection with another criminal case. The group of women, led by Alvina Pereira, gathered at the entrance of Fatorda police station after her husband was brought in for questioning in connection with another criminal case, police said. According to the complaint filed by lady police sub-inspector Sukhada Prabhudessai, the six accused women — Sheetal Gunjikar, Shoba Gunjikar, Priyanka, Anjela Fernandes, and Neelam Naik, apart from Pereira — created a commotion through their 'loud behaviour'. When Prabhudessai attempted to address the situation, the women allegedly used criminal force against her by grabbing her collar, physically preventing her from carrying out her lawful duties, police said. The police booked a case under sections 132 and 221 of the BNS, 2023, which deal with assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty, and obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions. Case against hospital staff: MYL workers clash with cops
Kozhikode: Tension flared in Manjeri after Muslim Youth League activists clashed with police during a march to Manjeri Medical College, held to protest a police case against temporary staff who had raised the issue of two months' unpaid salaries with health minister Veena George. The protest, organized by the Youth League's Manjeri municipal committee, was aimed at blockading the medical college principal. Police stopped the marchers at the college gate, where activists staged a blockade. The confrontation escalated into a clash and several protesters were arrested. The case at the centre of the protest was registered by Manjeri police against identifiable temporary staff, accusing them of creating a commotion and a situation with potential for conflict during the minister's visit to the hospital on Aug 12. The employees had gathered to confront the minister after an inaugural event and demanded their pending salaries. Tensions rose further when CPM and DYFI activists accompanying the minister allegedly tried to prevent the staff from raising the issue with the minister. Based on a petition by medical college principal K K Anil Raj, police charged the employees, claiming they had disrupted the visit in violation of hospital instructions, thereby creating a conflict-prone situation.
