After Independence, the need for a strong, state-backed institution to extend credit to rural India became pressing. Acting on the recommendations of the All India Rural Credit Survey Committee, the government passed the
State Bank of India
Act in 1955, transforming the Imperial Bank into the State Bank of India (SBI) with a clear mandate to serve the broader economy.
Bank nationalisation
The nationalisation of banks marked another turning point.
Live Events
In 1969, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi brought 14 major private commercial banks under government ownership, aiming to align banking with national development goals. This move channelled credit towards agriculture, small industries and rural infrastructure.
A second wave of nationalisation followed in 1980, adding six more banks to the public sector and consolidating state control over the financial system. Alongside these changes, the cooperative banking movement, rooted in the 1904 Cooperative Societies Act, expanded access to credit in rural and semi-urban areas, operating on principles of mutual assistance and democratic governance.
1991 reforms
The reforms of 1991 fundamentally reshaped the sector.
Triggered by a balance of payments crisis, the government implemented sweeping liberalisation measures based on the Narasimham Committee's recommendations.
Interest rates were freed from state control, statutory liquidity and reserve requirements were eased, prudential norms were brought in line with global standards, and private sector participation was encouraged through new bank licences.
This ushered in a new generation of private banks that embraced technology, customer service and competitive practices, compelling public sector banks to modernise in response.
As the century turned, technology began to redefine how Indians interacted with money.
ATMs, cards and internet banking
The first ATM appeared in 1987, credit card usage slowly expanded with the arrival of global players like Visa and Mastercard, and internet banking gave customers the ability to manage accounts remotely.
The government's push for financial inclusion through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in 2014 brought millions of unbanked households into the formal system, creating a foundation for the next wave of digital transformation.
UPI and the digital payments revolution
That wave arrived with the Unified Payments Interface in 2016, launched by the National Payments Corporation of India.
By enabling instant, real-time transfers between individuals and merchants using simple IDs or QR codes, UPI revolutionised digital payments and made India a world leader in real-time transaction volumes.
Digital wallets, mobile banking and QR payments quickly became everyday tools, changing both consumer behaviour and the way businesses operate.
Meanwhile, the financial ecosystem expanded beyond traditional banks. Non-Banking Financial Companies, such as
Bajaj Finserv
and
Muthoot Finance
, began serving small businesses and under-banked populations, while fintech firms like
Paytm
and PhonePe reimagined payments, lending, insurance and wealth management.
The Account Aggregator framework enabled secure, consent-based sharing of financial data, paving the way for personalised services, while credit bureaus such as CIBIL standardised credit assessments and promoted responsible lending.
As of now, the sector stands on the brink of its next transformation: the RBI's Central Bank Digital Currency, known as the
digital rupee
or e₹.
Designed as a sovereign-backed legal tender in digital form, it offers the convenience of instant settlement and zero transaction costs, functioning like physical cash but stored in a secure digital wallet.
Pilot programmes are already testing its use in both wholesale and retail contexts, signalling the start of a new era in India's financial story, one where the boundaries between traditional banking, fintech and digital currency may blur entirely.

Cooking oil to aviation fuel: IndianOil's Panipat refinery bags global certification for SAF production; 35,000 tonnes targeted by year-end
Representative (AI-image) IndianOil 's Panipat refinery has received international certification to convert used cooking oil from homes and restaurants into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), company chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney said. The refinery has obtained the ICAO's ISCC CORSIA certification, developed under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, to produce SAF from used cooking oil, PTI reported. 'We are the only company in the country to get this certification,' Sahney said. 'The refinery will start producing some 35,000 tonnes per annum of SAF from the end of the calendar year.' According to him, this production capacity will be sufficient to meet India's requirement of blending 1 per cent SAF with conventional jet fuel by 2027. Under government rules, international airlines will need to use 1 per cent SAF-blended aviation turbine fuel (ATF) starting that year. SAF can be mixed with ATF up to 50 per cent. Collection agencies will source used cooking oil from large establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and companies including Haldiram, and supply it to the Panipat refinery. The facility will process the oil into SAF. 'There is a large amount of such oil available in the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emma & Mia Are Retiring — Their Handmade Jewelry Is 80% Off The Craft Weekly Read More Undo The only challenge is collection. While it is easy to collect from large hotel chains, a solution needs to be found for collection from small users, including households,' Sahney added. He explained that SAF produced at Panipat has 'undergone rigorous assessment for lifecycle carbon emissions and traceability, creating a clear pathway for Indian airlines to integrate certified SAF into their operations.' Other initiatives IndianOil also commissioned a Rs 5,000 crore Butyl Acrylate (BA) unit at its Koyali refinery in Gujarat, used in paint manufacturing. The 1,50,000 tonnes per year facility is the second in India after BPCL's Kochi unit. 'The paint industry is growing at a CAGR of 13-14 per cent, and the bulk of the raw material they use is imported. In July, we commissioned the BA unit at Koyali refinery, which will eliminate the need to import, saving foreign exchange for the country,' Sahney said. He added that together with BPCL's Kochi facility, the new unit can replace 80-90 per cent of India's BA imports. Sahney also announced that L&T has been selected to construct the nation's largest green hydrogen facility at Panipat. 'The 10,000 tonnes a year green hydrogen unit at the Panipat refinery will be ready in 27 months,' he said. The fuel will replace grey hydrogen currently used at refineries, lowering the carbon footprint of operations. Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water using renewable energy, emits only water vapour. Despite high global production costs, Sahney noted that India's comparatively low-cost renewable power keeps the price under USD 4 per kg. 'IndianOil remains agile and nimble in product innovation and meeting fast-changing energy dynamics. A lot of other innovations are in the works, which will be unveiled when they mature,' Sahney said. He added that IndianOil's SAF certification sets a benchmark for other refiners to increase production, helping the aviation sector lower emissions and supporting India's 2070 net-zero target. FPIs dump Indian equities worth Rs 21,000 cr in first half of Aug
Foreign investors offloaded Indian equities worth nearly Rs 21,000 crore in the first half of August, pressured by US-India trade tensions , lacklustre first-quarter corporate earnings , and a weakening rupee . With this, the total outflow by Foreign Portfolio Investors ( FPIs ) in equities reached the Rs 1.16 lakh crore mark so far in 2025, according to data with the depositories. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo The FPI activity will be influenced by the action on the tariff front ahead. The recent easing of tensions between the US and Russia, coupled with the absence of fresh sanctions, suggests that the proposed 25 per cent secondary tariff on India is unlikely to take effect after August 27, a clear positive for the market, Vaqarjaved Khan, CFA - Senior Fundamental Analyst, Angel One, said. Also, S&P has upgraded India's credit rating from BBB- to BBB, a move that could further boost FPIs' sentiment, he added. Live Events According to the depositories data, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew a net sum of Rs 29,975 crore from equities this month (till August 14). This came after a net withdrawal of Rs 17,741 crore in July. Before that, FPIs invested Rs 38,673 crore in the preceding three months from March to June. "The sustained outflows are being driven primarily by a confluence of global uncertainties. Heightened geopolitical tensions and ambiguity surrounding the interest rate trajectory in developed economies, particularly the United States, have contributed to a risk-averse sentiment," Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. Adding to this caution is the recent strengthening of the US dollar, which tends to reduce the relative attractiveness of emerging market assets like India's, he noted. Additionally, tepid earnings growth and elevated valuations have contributed to the outflow, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments, said. On the sectoral front, sustained selling in IT stocks has pulled the IT index down. However, banking and financials continue to be relatively resilient due to fair valuations and institutional buying. On the other hand, FPIs invested Rs 4,469 crore in the debt general limit, and pumped Rs 232 crore into the debt voluntary retention route during the period under review.
