Swimming: 'Better than Olympics' as Popovici wins world 200m free gold

Al-Ahram Weekly13 hours ago
David Popovici called it "even better than the Olympics" after the Paris 2024 champion claimed a thrilling gold in the 200m freestyle at the swimming world championships on Tuesday.
The popular 20-year-old Romanian timed it perfectly to reel in US rival Luke Hobson in the closing stages and take the title in 1min 43.53sec.
Hobson was forced to settle for silver (1:43.84) with Japan's 18-year-old Tatsuya Murasa taking bronze (1:44.54).
"Even better than the Olympics to be honest," said Popovici, who reclaimed his world crown from 2022.
"You know why?" he added.
"I trained a lot for the Olympics but this year has been more relaxed and easygoing."
He added: "I am very proud of myself."
The final in Singapore was billed as a duel between Popovici -- the Olympic champion -- and Paris bronze medallist Hobson.
And so it turned out, with Popovici putting on the afterburners in the dying stages of the race.
Britain's Matthew Richards, who took silver in the French capital a year ago, was a surprise casualty in the semi-finals.
South Korea's Hwang Sun-woo, who went to the first turn in front, finished just outside the medals in fourth.
The 200m freestyle was the first of five finals on the third day of competition in Singapore.

Zamalek sign midfielder Rabie from NBE Club on a five-year contract - Egyptian Football

Zamalek have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Ahmed Rabie from NBE Club, the Cairo giants announced on Tuesday, marking their seventh summer signing so far Zamalek have been active in the transfer market, bringing in goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, Angolan winger Chico Banza, forwards Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif, Moroccan U-20 international Abdelhamid Maali, and Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied. Rabie made 31 appearances in all competitions last season for NBE Club, registering a single assist. The move of the 24-year-old to Zamalek appears to be part of a swap deal, following winger Mostafa Shalaby's recent switch in the opposite direction. Zamalek are looking to rebuild after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign in which they finished third in the Egyptian Premier League and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. The Whites open their new league season on 9 August with a challenging fixture against Ceramica Cleopatra at Suez Stadium. Cycling: Wiebes claims Tour de France stage as Vos holds lead - Omni sports

Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes won the fourth stage of the women's Tour de France on Tuesday, outpacing her compatriot and yellow jersey-holder Marianne Vos at the end of a bunch sprint. Just as in the previous day's stage, the SD Worx team sprinter once again beat the overall leader by a wheel to claim her second consecutive stage victory. Ireland's Lara Gillespie completed the podium at the end of a stage which was thankfully much cleaner than Monday's in Angers, when several riders found themselves caught up in a mass crash. The main victim of that crash, Dutch rider Demi Vollering, appeared apprehensive at the start in Saumur on Tuesday. But the overall favourite for the Tour finished in the peloton in the same time as Wiebes. Vollering sits sixth overall, 25sec behind leader Vos and 13sec behind second-placed Wiebes. Tuesday's stage was led by Franziska Koch of Germany and Brazilian Ana Vitoria Magalhaes, after they made a break just over an hour into the day's racing. They were caught 3km from the finish line by the SD Worx team, who catapulted Wiebes to her 16th victory this season and the 109th of her career. Wednesday will be the longest stage of the 2025 edition with its 165.8km run between Chasseneuil-du-Poitou/Futuroscope and Gueret, complete with a slog to the finish featuring three climbs inside the final 35km.
