Car Companies May Love DCTs, But Dual-Clutch Transmissions Have Disadvantages Too

Dual-clutch automatic transmissions have exploded in popularity over the last two decades. They're used in performance cars of all types, from the Volkswagen GTI and Hyundai Elantra N to the BMW M2 and McLaren 720s. But dual-clutch transmissions have also found homes in normal cars. Hyundai and Kia are big users of dual-clutch transmissions in models like the Kia Seltos crossover and the N-Line versions of the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra.
Automakers use dual-clutch transmissions for good reasons. Compared to a normal automatic a dual-clutch has more than a few benefits, mainly increased acceleration, quicker gear changes and better fuel economy. It took automakers a while to warm up to the idea of the dual-clutch, though. The dual-clutch transmission was invented over 80 years ago by French engineer Adolphe Kegresse, and it wouldn't be until the early 2000s that the dual-clutch would start to get traction with automakers.
Volkswagen was one of the first automakers to bring a dual-clutch transmission to market with the Mark 4 Golf R32. This was followed by other performance models in the late '00s like the R35 Nissan GT-R, Bugatti Veyron and Mitsubishi Evolution X. Despite this use in high-performance vehicles and the obvious performance advantages, dual-clutch transmissions have a few disadvantages as well.

You can tell how complicated dual-clutch transmissions are just from the name. In a conventional manual transmission, a driver operates the clutch pedal to change gears. When pressed, the clutch pedal disconnects the engine from the gearbox, causing a brief power interruption while the driver selects the next gear with the shifter. When this happens, a toothed collar moves from one gear wheel to the next gear wheel, which is a different size. To prevent the gears from grinding, synchronizers match the gears up. Once the clutch pedal is released and the gear change is completed, the engine is reconnected to the driver shaft and the engine's power is sent to the wheels.
A dual-clutch transmission basically does all that automatically without a clutch pedal, but it's way more complicated. As the name suggest, there are two clutches: one clutch controls the odd gears while the other controls the even numbered ones. Assisted by a bunch of electronics and hydraulics, the gears are able to change like an automatic transmission but without the interruption of power that happens in a normal manual transmission. Things get more complicated when you factor in things like wet dual-clutch transmissions, which cover parts of the transmission's inner workings in lubricating fluid to reduce heat and friction. So there's more to go wrong, and more money out of your pocket if something needs to be fixed or replaced. Ford owners know this first-hand thanks to the nightmare that was the PowerShift transmission — some owners reported getting repair bills of a couple thousand bucks just to replace the clutch.
DCTs aren't usually stand-alone options by themselves, save for a few exceptions. The F87 BMW M2 offered buyers the choice of either a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It wasn't cheap, though, costing $2,900. Other automakers just factor in the price of the transmission with the overall cost of the car, but it'll still be a bit more than cars that don't come with the transmission. Take the Hyundai Elantra N-Line, for instance. This Honda Civic Si competitor comes with a 201-horsepower turbocharged engine and a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. Despite being positioned as one rung down from the top-of-the-line Elantra Limited, the Elantra N-Line is the most expensive trim in the lineup. There's a $2,200 difference in price between the N-Line and Limited; that difference grows to $3,150 if you compare the N-Line with the Elantra SEL Convenience.
One of the biggest drawbacks of a DCT is the smoothness of the gearshifts. You can have lightning fast shifts to your heart's content all day long, especially if you're really into the car's performance envelope. Once things tone down and get back to normal, it can feel like you're getting kicked in the back by shifts. Some people may even think something is wrong with their car. Others may experience more jerkiness when the car is cold. There's no need to worry, though, because this is just a normal part of DCT operation and a downside of those fast shifts. At higher speeds, the computer can anticipate that you're going to need that next gear ASAP, but low speeds can trip the computer up, causing a delay and jerkiness because it can't anticipate what gear you're needing next.
Even with these drawbacks, DCTs are still fantastic transmissions. And unless you're driving something that the manufacturer just didn't get right out of the gate, none of this should scare you away from owning one. Just like any other component of a vehicle, treat it right and service it regularly and you shouldn't encounter any problems.

Two ad spots and two long-form videos feature a French cowboy who lives in Paris, Texas and drives Hyundai's hybrids. A separate campaign, 'He Got Money,' focuses on fuel savings and is targeted at an African-American audience. The campaigns, from Innocean USA and Culture Brands, respectively, come as the automaker has seen hybrid vehicle sales increase 44% so far in 2025, despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty. Hyundai is going all-in on its hybrid vehicles with a pair of ads that mix humor and value propositions like performance and savings. The automaker has seen a big boost in hybrid vehicle sales, with total hybrid vehicle sales jumping 5% in May, per details shared with Marketing Dive. The 'Best of Both Worlds' effort focuses on Jean-Luc, a cowboy born in Paris, France who lives in Paris, Texas. A 30-second 'Cowboy' spot which debuted on June 8 during the NBA finals focuses on the Sante Fe Hybrid and shows how the titular character can have 'more cheese' on his plate by saving on fuel. 'Mosey' focuses on the Tucson Hybrid and will air later this month. In addition, a long-form YouTube spot has a cinematic feel, albeit one drawn more from Westerns and not Wim Wenders' art house classic 'Paris, Texas.' However, the campaign was filmed on location in the Texas town, and Hyundai will donate an estimated $30,000 from production to support local schools in the community. Created by Innocean with media by Canvas, 'Best of Both Worlds' will run across broadcast, digital and programmatic platforms, with custom digital content on TikTok, Meta, Reddit, YouTube and beyond. In a separate but related effort, Hyundai continued its series of 'Okay Hyundai' ads with 'He Got Money.' The 30-second ad focuses on a character who owns a hybrid and the gossip about his seemingly extravagant lifestyle, which — in a nod to ongoing price pressures — includes a fridge full of eggs. 'He Got Money' will run across broadcast and digital platforms in both 15- and 30-second formats and will be featured in influencer partnerships. The ad, which is targeted at an African-American audience, features Kathleen Bradley — best known as Mrs. Parker from the cult classic "Friday' — and is from Hyundai's African American agency of record, Culture Brands. ''He Got Money' shows how the Tucson Hybrid empowers drivers to enjoy more of what matters—style, comfort, and community—thanks to real savings at the pump,' said Erik Thomas, director of experiential and multicultural marketing, Hyundai Motor America, in a press release. Hyundai's increased hybrid sales follow the automaker becoming the launch partner of Amazon Autos late last year. One global auto brand moved approximately $80 million in annual ad spend from The Trade Desk to Amazon's ad platform by the end of Q1, partially due to its ability to sell its cars via the online retailer, Adweek reported. VW's EV Masterplan Expands Beyond Just Batteries

Volkswagen is in the middle of a turnaround strategy that will put the German brand back on track. Its grand plan was revealed earlier this year, with nine new models to be launched in the next few years. The all-new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP)is part of this movement, though various issues have plagued its rollout, including software issues related to Cariad. Now, VW has revealed an update about the SSP, and it's a major one that involves internal combustion engines. After years of touting the SSP as its clean-sheet EV architecture, the German auto giant has revealed that SSP will also support internal combustion engines, though not in the traditional sense. Instead, VW is pivoting toward range-extending gas engines that generate electricity to charge batteries, not drive the wheels. While VW may tout this as an evolution of the SSP architecture, the incorporation of a range-extender engine is more like a safety net for the brand. At this point, several automakers have already backpedaled from their all-EV push due to waning demand for BEVs. VW is one of them, and this is the company's solution. The SSP architecture will still be fully electric at heart, but it will also accommodate range extenders. These are internal combustion engines used solely to generate power for the battery, with no mechanical link to the wheels. Nissan's e-Power, which is reportedly reaching the US market, operates on the same principle as VW's SSP. The defunct Mazda MX-30 also got a similar upgrade with a rotary range extender, while VW Group's own Scout brand is also launching in the market with the same technology. One of SSP's headline vehicles will be the ninth-generation VW Golf, which will be fully electric and will coexist with the current Mk8 Golf for several years. It's unclear whether there will be a range-extended version of the Golf, but we expect the model to arrive by 2029, so there is an allowance for adjustments to VW's plan. In China, the world's biggest automotive market, Volkswagen already previewed the ID. Era concept, which features a gasoline-powered range extender. Of note, EV demand in China is also dropping, with range-extended EVs and plug-in hybrid gaining popularity. Despite the expanded capabilities, VW doesn't expect this range-extended EV strategy to take hold everywhere. That likely kills any chance of the United States ever getting the SUV variant if the automaker decides to make one. It's a truck that Kia designed for emerging markets, Korea, and Australia. However, Kia does plan to launch a different truck in the United States, but it'll be all-electric and ride on a new platform. We don't know when it'll arrive, but Kia believes it'll be able to sell 90,000 of them once production gets rolling, which could be as soon as next year.
