Celebrities including Olympians, chess grandmaster, actors and fitness icons have joined 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' to mark eight years of GST and celebrated a nationwide commitment to fitness, uniting thousands across CBIC-GST centres in a synchronised push towards health, community, and cleaner air.
Actor and fitness icon Suneil Shetty gave a powerful call for consistent wellness at the nationwide Sundays on Cycle event, hosted by the Fit India Movement in collaboration with CBIC-GST, saying, 'Wellness is far cheaper than illness. Fitness should not be a one-day thing, like cycling only today, but must be practised every day for overall wellness. Only then does it make a difference.' Shetty joined participants at the GST Commissionerate in Mumbai, adding star power and substance to an initiative that's fast becoming a people's movement.
The May 18 event marked eight years of GST and celebrated a nationwide commitment to fitness, uniting thousands across CBIC-GST centres in a synchronised push towards health, community, and cleaner air.
At Thiruvananthapuram, the event was flagged off by three celebrated Olympians and international athletes — Jisna Mathew (Rio 2016, 4x400m), M.P. Jabir (Tokyo 2020, 400m hurdles), and Anu Raghavan (Asian Games and Championship medalist). Their presence inspired over 200 participants to take on the cycling trail with passion and pride.
Leading the peloton were five of India's top cyclists — Pooja Danole, Dhanyadha JP, Srimathi J, Rejiya Devi, and Niraimathi J — each a decorated national and international medalist. Their guidance powered the message: fitness isn't just a sprint, it's a marathon we ride together.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, cycling was just one part of the movement. Chess Grandmaster Tania Sachdev, fresh from her gold medal win at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, joined the ride and energised crowds with a fitness-forward message. 'Fitness doesn't need fancy equipment or a gym — just willpower and discipline,' she said. 'Stamina is essential even in chess. Cycling is now a big part of my fitness regime.'
The capital's event, held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featured Zumba, rope skipping, and yoga sessions, transforming the Sunday into a celebration of movement and mental wellness. The event was held at various locations across the country including SAI RCs, STCs, NCOEs, Khelo India Centres, and all key CBIC-GST centres.
Shashank Priya, Special Secretary and Member, CBIC GST, added, 'This collaboration with Fit India and GST is a strong message that fitness is for everyone — not just for athletes. It's encouraging to see such awareness around lifestyle diseases and the need for better food habits and less sugar.'
'What we eat is also important so that we control too much sugar and aerated drinks. It's important to ensure so we can fight obesity. We are prone to heart disease so it is important to move towards this goal of a fitter, healthier India,' he added.
The cycling initiative has now rolled through 5,500+ locations and reached over 3 lakh citizens since its launch in December 2024. Social media buzzed with endorsements from icons including Sania Mirza, Milind Soman, Emraan Hashmi, John Abraham, Imtiaz Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, and Dara Singh, all lending their voices to inspire everyday fitness.
'India is coming together to take a step towards fitness by cycling. I urge everyone to join our officers this Sunday and make it a memorable event,' said Shankar Mahadevan, in his video message. 'Fit Hum, Toh Fit India,' added Milind Soman.
With growing momentum, Fit India's Sundays on Cycle is redefining how we move, one pedal stroke at a time — turning public spaces into wellness hubs, and citizens into champions of health.

Karnataka HC demands state submit detailed report on stampede
The Karnataka high court on Thursday raised serious concerns over the planning and preparedness of the IPL victory celebrations that triggered a deadly stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, directing the state government to submit detailed responses on key aspects, including who authorised the event, what crowd control and emergency measures were in place, and whether there had been any advance assessment of the turnout. A bench of acting chief justice V Kameswar Rao and justice CM Joshi asked the state pointedly whether permissions had even been sought to organise such a celebration, whether a standard operating procedure exists for managing crowds above 50,000, and if immediate medical help was extended to the injured. The questions came after a stampede outside the stadium killed 11 and injured around 50 people. Taking suo motu cognisance of the June 4 incident, the bench directed the government to file a comprehensive status report addressing nine specific questions by June 10, when the matter will be heard next. The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday evening when over 250,000 people reportedly gathered near the stadium after announcements of free public entry to the celebratory event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The stadium's official capacity, the government told the court, is about 30,000. During the hearing, advocate general Shashi Kiran Shetty admitted that the crowd outside the stadium was in a state of 'frenzy'. 'Each person thought they would only be one more,' said Shetty, acknowledging the chaotic conditions and noting that people had travelled from across the state and even from outside Karnataka. The court then directed the government to explain, 'When and who took the decision to hold the celebration, and how it was to be conducted.' 'What traffic and crowd regulation measures were in place; whether medical arrangements were made in advance and whether those injured were given timely medical attention,' the court added. It has also asked the state to clarify in its status report if any 'advance estimate of the crowd size was undertaken; whether SOPs exist to manage gatherings above 50,000 people; and if permissions were formally obtained for the event.' While a magisterial inquiry is underway, the AG submitted that its report will be submitted within a fortnight. AG Shetty confirmed that the stampede occurred at three entry gates, despite all 21 stadium gates being open. Shetty also said the government was not 'sparing anyone' responsible for the tragedy. The petitioners and members of the Bar who were present in the court, including senior advocate Aruna Shyam, questioned the wisdom of announcing free public entry with no advance planning. Shyam also urged the court to appoint an independent body to monitor the probe. The bench assured the petitioners that it will ensure accountability and suggested that everyone wait until the state filed its status report. The court also said it will examine claims that the announcement of free entry was made not by the government but by a franchise official, and that only three of the 21 gates of the stadium were effectively accessible to the public. An FIR has been registered by the city police following the incident and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, event-management company DNA Entertainment, and the administrative committee of the Karnataka State Cricket Association have been named in it.

KOCHI: Better late than never! Technology has not been kind to the elderly, but then there are those among this demographic who have overcome feelings of dread and insufficiency to make it work for them. Take the case of 75-year-old Kurian Jacob, a late bloomer who views the achievements in his 'sunset years' as worth the wait. An ace swimmer, he bagged nine medals including two individual gold—at the World Masters Games held in Taipei, Taiwan last month. Born in Thidanadu, Kanjirapally, Kurian never cared to take up swimming—something that he was first exposed to as an infant in the river next to his house—as a sport until later in life. 'The activity remained an integral part of my life. But I never thought of turning professional, until my retirement,' he says. At the World Masters, which also featured former Olympians and world champions, Kurian won gold in the 200m freestyle pool and 3km open water events. He also medalled in two men's relays and mixed relays, besides the 100m and 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. The swimming competition featured around 2,500 athletes. 'For nine months, I regularly practised the 3km swim in pools, rivers and in the open sea to condition myself to withstand heavy currents and build strength. I believe that the dedication has paid off,' Kurian points out. Kurian worked abroad with Standard Chartered Bank for many years before settling in Kochi in 2017. In 2019, he heard about the state masters championship from friends who were preparing to compete in the event. 'I was 69 when I first participated in a professional competition. Victories there took me to the nationals, where I was unable to find my true form. In fact, this setback ,the motivation for me achieve more,' he said.

‘Not sparing anyone': What Karnataka government told high court on Bengaluru stampede
During a suo motu hearing on the Bengaluru stampede in which 11 people died, the Karnataka government told the Karnataka high court on Thursday that 2.5 lakh people had unexpectedly congregated outside the Chinnaswamy stadium to celebrate the victory of the local team, RCB, in the Indian Premier League. The government also told the court that they had deployed over 1400 personnel, including senior officials, to maintain the law and order situation outside and inside the stadium. Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, appearing for the state, told the court that 2.5 lakh people turned up because it was published that the entry was free, reported Live Law. He said the event management is handled by RCB during IPL matches. He said the huge crowd accumulated because people from outside the state also turned up outside the stadium. He further said that the government has ordered a magisterial probe whose report will be furnished in 15 days. He also said the government is not "sparing anyone" responsible for the tragedy. On the court's query regarding the number of gates, the advocate general submitted, "Total 21, and instructions were that they were open and people were allowed inside and seated. 2 lakh people were around this place. We have started an inquiry, and notices have been given to everyone; we are not sparing anyone," he said. He said the government will video-record the probe and place it before the court. "Are there any vehicles which can be made available if such an incident happens, to which hospitals will the injured be taken? All this is to be included in SOP," the bench observed. Shetty responded by saying that the government has taken the incident seriously, and it will prepare an SOP. Eleven people died, and at least 33 were injured in the stampede that took place before RCB's victory celebrations. CM Siddaramaiah blamed overcrowding for the tragedy.
