Kalyan-Dombivli civic body bans meat sale, slaughter on Independence Day; NCP(SP) leader Jitendra Awhad plans ‘mutton party'

Indian Express2 days ago
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and meat shops in its jurisdiction for 24 hours on August 15, Independence Day. The civic body said the restriction will apply to all licensed butchers dealing in goats, sheep, chicken, and large animals, and will remain in force from midnight on August 14.
The notice, signed by Kanchan Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner, Licensing, warns that action will be taken under sections 334, 336 and 394(A) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any meat is sold or animals are slaughtered during the period. The order comes at a time when the KDMC is under administrative rule, with the commissioner functioning as the state government's representative.
The Opposition has sharply criticised the move, terming it 'food policing'. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Dr Jitendra Awhad alleged that the government was 'fueling a vegetarian–non-vegetarian divide' after having 'exhausted other social controversies'. He questioned whether residents were now being told what to eat on Independence Day and argued that such a directive could not have been issued without state-level approval.
'My plan is to host a mutton party at the spot. The Maharashtra Government should just announce the date,' Awhad said, adding that he will eat mutton in Kalyan-Dombivli on Friday to defy the order.
Terming the decision 'unacceptable', NCP (SP) parliamentarian Suresh Mhatre said food choices are deeply rooted in cultural traditions, particularly in the coastal Agri-Koli community, which consumes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. 'Such a ban cannot be imposed,' he stated.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray too joined the criticism, calling for the KDMC commissioner's suspension. 'Who is the commissioner to tell us what to eat and what not to? Bridges are collapsing, roads are in terrible shape, and instead of fixing them, the administration is busy banning food,' Thackeray said.
Defending the order, Shiv Sena MLA from Kalyan, Vishwanath Bhoir, said there was no public objection and that being vegetarian for one day should not be an issue. 'If people follow become vegetarian for one day, what is the harm? Criticism is the job of the Opposition,' he added.

Uddhav Thackeray: Attempts being made to undermine importance of Mumbai like in pre-Sena era

Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said urged that attempts are being made to undermine the importance of Mumbai and Maharashtra, similar to pre-Shiv Sena era when the Marathi-speaking population was treated as 'outsiders' in Mumbai. Uddhav also urged Chief Justice of India B R Gavai to consider the Sena UBT's plea against Deputy CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Speaking at the 65th foundation day of Marmik, the political weekly launched in 1960 by Sena founder Bal Thackeray and his brother Shrikant, Uddhav said, 'The Marathi manoos ensured we got Mumbai. But before the formation of the undivided Shiv Sena in 1966, they were treated as outsiders. Today, also similar efforts are on to recreate those circumstances — whether by imposing Hindi or by diminishing Mumbai and Maharashtra's stature. These attempts have not stopped. The work of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Marmik will not end until we finish those behind them.' The event at Ravindra Natya Mandir in Prabhadevi saw the presence of senior party leaders, including Sanjay Raut, Anil Desai, Subhash Desai, Chandrakant Khaire, Anil Parab, Ambadas Danve, Aditya Thackeray, Rashmi Thackeray, and others. Uddhav also spoke at length about Marmik's five-decade contribution to Maharashtra's political and cultural discourse, and praised 'The Folk Aakhyan', a musical showcase of traditional forms such as ovi, gavlan, powada, bharud, tribal songs, and farmer ballads. Stating that CJI B R Gavai has agreed to look into the Supreme Court on relocation of stray dogs, the Sena UBT leader urged the CJI to also consider the plea against Shinde Sena. 'When public outrage arose, Justice Gavai immediately took note. We are happy to have a dutiful Chief Justice. But after the Shiv Sena split… Three Chief Justices have come and gone; now you are the fourth. I fold my hands and request you: at the doors of the Supreme Court, democracy is gasping. It's been three-four years, and no one knows when it will die. If justice is not dispensed in time, democracy will die,' he said. Thackeray also hit out at the government over what he called a climate of apathy towards pressing national issues. 'Even as democracy is being killed, there is happiness. There are no jobs, but everything is going on happily. Trump is issuing warnings from America, but no one cares. There's no time to answer people's questions after the Pahalgam attack. Amid this 'good atmosphere', our state's culture and traditions are on the verge of being consigned to history,' he said.

J&K: Soldier killed in Uri as Army foils LoC infiltration bid; Chinar Corps expressed 'deepest condolences'

SRINAGAR: Havildar Ankit Kumar of 9 Bihar Regiment was killed early Wednesday while fighting armed intruders near the Loc in Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district — the third Army fatality in five days in counterterrorism operations, raising the year's security death toll in J&K to 17. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Army's 15 Corps, or Chinar Corps, confirmed on social media the death of Kumar, 35, and expressed 'deepest condolences' to the bereaved family. Sources said the infiltration bid was foiled, but the intruders exploited poor visibility and monsoon rain to retreat into PoK. It was the first such attempt in Uri since Operation Sindoor in early May when heavy Pakistani firing and shelling followed India's destruction of terrorist infrastructure in PoK and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam massacre that left 22 people dead, most of them tourists. 'This is clear proof that old patterns of infiltration attempts backed by Pakistan will persist,' said Luv Puri, former UN counterterrorism official and Kashmir analyst. 'In the current climate where renewed US-Pakistan engagement is being discussed, the purpose of the infiltration attempt seems to be to signal that nothing has changed and that shifting geopolitical winds may only have emboldened them to make this point. ' The Uri clash came a day after the Army ended an 11-day offensive in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, where two soldiers — Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh of 19 Rashtriya Rifles — were killed and 10 personnel wounded before a terrorist was shot dead. Of the 17 security personnel killed in J&K operations this year, four have died in Kashmir and 13 in Jammu division. Security forces have killed 14 terrorists in Kashmir so far in 2025, among them three top Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives linked to the Pahalgam attack, gunned down in Srinagar on July 28. On Monday, soldier Banoth Anil Kumar died after falling into a deep gorge during a routine patrol near the LoC in Uri sector. He was from Telangana.

State govt refuses to observe Partition event in universities

T'puram: State govt made it clear that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day wouldn't be observed in universities in the state as directed by the chancellor. Higher education minister R Bindu on Wednesday said universities wouldn't organise any programmes to observe this day and strict instructions were issued in this regard. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She said when a programme titled Partition Horrors was convened, it was undoubtedly clear that it would lead to communal hatred and divisions in society. Hence, state govt is of the view that such an issue should not be encouraged on the campuses of the state, she added. The minister said if the seeds of division were being sown in universities, it seemed unlikely that any conciliatory efforts would succeed in the future. Meanwhile, governor sent another letter to vice-chancellors regarding the observance, requesting detailed information about the events. Based on this, the respective universities have written to individual colleges regarding this. Opposition leader V D Satheesan said governor's suggestion to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was a serious mistake. "Governor should not attempt to implement Sangh Parivar agenda of dividing the country. If implemented, the opposition will resist it. They have come up with a new tool called Partition Fear to divide the people," he alleged. "Governor's actions, which undermine the spirit of Independence Day celebrations, are anti-national and anti-democratic. Chief minister has expressed his protest. However, the chief minister should be ready to directly convey the protest of state govt and its people to governor," he added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Satheesan alleged that governor was making unnecessary interventions in universities. "Governor should not interfere with the constitutional powers of universities. The chancellor's position in universities is ceremonial. The problem is that govt is often not ready to firmly tell governor that what he was doing was wrong," said Satheesan.
