What Colorado fans need to know about the Iowa State Cyclones

USA Today15-07-2025
After falling short last year, the Iowa State Cyclones have one thing on their mind: win the Big 12. However, Colorado stands in the way of that task.
Heading into Week 7 of the season, the Buffs' hope to be in good shape offensively and defensively after tough matchups versus BYU and TCU. But the schedule does not get any easier with Iowa State coming to Boulder in what should be one of their most challenging games. The Cyclones are an experienced group returning 14 starters from last season.
While it will still be early in conference play for both teams, this game could separate either team as contenders for the Big 12. The Cyclones and Buffs have a long history dating back to 1946, with this year's matchup being the two programs' 66th all-time meeting.

2024 in review
Iowa State is coming off an unprecedented season where they went 11-3 with a win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl over Miami. Their conference schedule was on the easier side, with six of their nine conference opponents being in the bottom eight of the Big 12. However, when push came to shove, the Cyclones won their biggest games.
ISU's biggest game of the season was a Week 12 matchup against Kansas State. The Cyclones' defense held the Wildcats' top-five offense to limited production in the second half and secured their first 10-win season in program history.
Head coach profile
The Cyclones are led by the winningest head coach in program history, Matt Campbell. He is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Big 12 and has helped build Iowa State into a winning program. Since 2016, he has had only two losing seasons and three bowl wins in seven appearances. Coming off his most successful season, can his teams remain consistent, and will he be able to propel himself as one of college football's top coaches?
Top offensive player
Rocco Becht had an impressive red-shirt sophomore campaign and can take an even bigger jump in 2025. He was third in the Big 12 in passing yards and fifth in touchdowns. He completed nearly 60% of his passes while passing for 3,505 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Heading into this season, Becht is expected to spearhead the Cyclones' offense into another successful year. However, he lost his top two targets from last season, so it'll depend on other receivers to step up and make plays.
Top defensive players
It's challenging to select a single defensive player for Iowa State when they have three players who made the preseason All-Big 12 team. The Cyclones had a middle-of-the-pack defense in 2024; however, their pass defense was elite, thanks in part to the contributions of these two cornerbacks.
Jeremiah Cooper and Jontez Williams each had successful 2024 seasons that earned them a spot on the All-Big 12 team. In 2024, Cooper was lockdown corner with a team-leading eight pass deflections, two interceptions and 48 tackles. Williams had a similar season with 46 tackles, but snagged a few more picks with four while still tallying five pass deflections.
2025 schedule
Way-too-early Colorado matchup preview
The Buffs and Cyclones, at this point in the 2025 season, should be must-watch television. While fans might expect a high-scoring matchup between Rocco Becht and Colorado's reconfigured offense, the game is likely to be a defensive slugfest. The Buffs' defense isn't likely to take a significant step back, and Iowa State's defense is solid and could lock down a Colorado offense still figuring things out.
Ultimately, the Buffaloes' fate will depend on two things: can they get to the quarterback, and can they produce on offense? Iowa State has a strong offensive line with many returning starters that could stump Robert Livingston's aggressive play calling. This game is a toss-up.

Big 12 Conference pokes fun at Big Ten commissioner's College Football Playoff ideas

Conference media days across the country are taking place this month, and a significant point of discussion has been the expansion of the College Football Playoff. Big 12 and ACC commissioners and coaches prefer five automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large bids, while the SEC and Big Ten appear to favor a "4-4-3-3-1-3" model. The latter would give the Big Ten and SEC four automatic bids each. The topic generated, understandably, is a hot-button issue in college football. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti created a viral moment when he suggested that a 6-3 Big Ten team should still be considered for a CFP spot. "If you're 6-3 in the Big Ten, i would argue that's a good record," Petitti said. "If you stumble in the nonconference I don't know why that would disqualify you from playoff contention." The Big 12 Conference social media team replied to Petitti with a jab of their own, featuring the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes, who finished 6-3, losing to the Big 12's Iowa State in nonconference play. I love the Big 12 social team for doing this because it just shows that no one believed Iowa was a playoff team last season. It also highlights that the Hawkeyes' loss to a talented Iowa State squad was detrimental to their playoff hopes, as it should be. It is quite a statement from Petitti, and sure, if those losses are against top-tier Big Ten opponents and come with some memorable wins, then perhaps a team with three losses could still be playoff-worthy. Otherwise, it is a nonstarter in my eyes. The evolution of the CFP format over the next few years will be a central topic as the 2025 season progresses. Colorado football offers multiple currently committed 2026 recruits

Colorado's 2026 recruiting class has been developing slowly, ranking No. 80 in the nation, according to 247 Sports. However, the Buffaloes aren't out of time and are still sending out offers to impactful players. On Wednesday, the Buffaloes offered three-star defensive lineman and current Kentucky commit Ben Duncum and three-star offensive tackle and San Jose State commit Josiah Manu. Both have been committed to their schools for over a month, and neither has visited Boulder. Still, the name, image and likeness era delivers surprise commitment flips every day, and there's a good chance that the Buffaloes might be able to flip one or both before the end of the season. Duncum is especially intriguing as a prospect and could be a candidate to be elevated to four-star status. Out of Lake Travis High School in Texas, Duncum has a motor that doesn't stop and size that would allow him to fit into whatever role the Buffaloes need. At 6-foot-5 and only 255, Duncum will need to add weight to perform at the next level, but he's proven himself at that size. In his junior season, he racked up 61 total tackles, an impressive mark for a defensive lineman. What's not as encouraging is his pass-rushing stats; of the 61 total tackles, only five were tackles for loss and two were sacks. He does possess a knack for finding the ball, forcing two fumbles. A local product out of Loveland, Colorado, Manu appears on paper to be the prospect the Buffaloes could flip the easiest. Aside from the proximity to home, Buffaloes are Manu's second power-four offer, with the other being fellow Big 12 school Arizona. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 295, Manu already brings elite size for a freshman at the position. A two-way player in high school, Manu has a lot of bend and wins a lot of his matchups by simply being stronger than his opponent. Like Duncum, Manu's motor doesn't quit, and he routinely finishes blocks to the turf. Both sides of the trenches are key for the Buffaloes to continue their ascent, not just in the Big 12, but in the college football world as a whole. A flip from either of these recruits to Colorado would be a significant addition to a recruiting class that has not met the quality we have come to expect from head coach Deion Sanders.
