Amid spotlight on Chettur Sankaran Nair, BJP and Congress battle for his legacy in Kerala
smrithi kudeeram
' (memorial) dedicated to Chettur Sankaran Nair -- the only Keralite to have served as president of the All India Congress Committee and the sole Indian on the viceroy's executive council -- is an obscure and hard-to-reach structure. Situated at his ancestral home, near the now-defunct Mankara railway station, nearly 19 km from Palakkad, the site remained largely forgotten, save for the occasional visit on his death anniversary.
But April 24 marked a rare moment of political convergence. On the occasion of Nair's 91st death anniversary, the memorial witnessed an unexpected surge in footfall. Despite the previous day's rain, which rendered the surrounding paddy fields muddy and the path nearly impassable, dozens of people made the arduous trek -- crossing railway tracks and slushy terrain -- to pay homage to the historic figure. Notably, the visitors arrived in two political contingents: BJP leaders, followed by their Congress counterparts.
While the Congress has consistently observed Nair's memorial day over the years, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent reference to Sankaran Nair that reignited national interest in the freedom fighter and former statesman. The mention not only catalysed renewed political attention, but also prompted a symbolic reclaiming of his legacy.
For a day, the memorial was transformed -- decked up with flowers, freshly cleaned, and marked by flags of both political parties. Leaders from both sides offered floral tributes in separate ceremonies, each honouring Nair while subtly staking ideological claims to his contributions.
BJP national executive member PK Krishnadas, addressing a public gathering at Vella Road Junction -- about 2 km from the memorial -- praised Nair's unwavering patriotism. "He was a fearless patriot who spoke out against the British after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, even while serving on the viceroy's executive council. Although he served as AICC chief, it is unfortunate that the Congress today does not value his contributions," Krishnadas said.
"There are two reasons why the Congress does not want to remember Nair. One, they are slyly rewriting history to suggest that only leaders from the Nehru-Gandhi family were freedom fighters. Two, Nair wrote in his book on what exactly happened during the Mappila Rebellion in Malabar, and just to appease the Muslim League and a few extremist groups, the Congress leadership conveniently kept aside Nair and his contributions to the country," Krishnadas said.
Krishnadas said the BJP will take all efforts to build a proper memorial for Chettur immediately. Three members from the Chettur family were honoured at the function, attended by BJP district leaders and a handful of party members.
Around 2 km away, at the Parali Congress block committee office, the Congress held another remembrance event, like it has in recent years, which was inaugurated by Palakkad MP VK Sreekandan.
"We are really happy that the BJP has started honouring Chettur, who always stood for secular India and died a pure Congressman. It took a film to release for the BJP men to know about Chettur. Because, they do not learn the history of our country and they do not have any freedom fighters to boast of. We are so proud that they are honouring a former AICC president and we hope they would realise the contribution of all the Congressmen and the party in days to come," said Sreekandan.
On the day, the Congress held programmes at various locations to pay homage to Nair, attended by its veteran leaders and party workers.
As tributes poured in from both sides, it was evident that Nair -- once a forgotten figure in Kerala's historical consciousness -- had become a new bone of contention in the state's political discourse.

Thousands to join US ‘Fight the Trump Takeover' protests against Republican redistricting plans
Americans in dozens of states are staging rallies Saturday against plans by US President Donald Trump and Republican leaders to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, The Guardian reported. The demonstrations, held under the banner 'Fight the Trump Takeover', are taking place in at least 34 states. The largest event is in Austin, Texas, where Trump has supported a mid-decade redistricting plan that could give Republicans five extra seats in Congress. 'Fight the Trump Takeover' protests set to rock 20 states this weekend. Thank you for organizing these events. Power to the people who comprehend facts and really care about this country. — lonnieframe(fo) (@SaBurchul) August 15, 2025 Other states may also redraw their districts. According to The Guardian, Republican leaders in Florida, Missouri and Ohio are weighing similar moves, while California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has said he will launch a counter-redistricting effort. The Democratic National Committee is supporting today's protests. It said: 'From coast to coast, people will be showing up at their statehouses, city halls, and community spaces to make it clear – we see what Trump is doing, and we won't stand for it.' Activist groups such as Indivisible, MoveOn and Planned Parenthood are also involved. Ezra Levin of Indivisible told The Guardian: 'In the fight against authoritarianism, not every single protest needs to match the scale of the one before it. What matters is sustaining the pressure.' Drucilla Tigner, of Texas For All, added: 'Though this fight started in Texas, it doesn't end here. This isn't just about redistricting or one state's politics. It's about the future of our democracy.'

"Attempt To Mislead": Poll Body Fact-Checks Congress's 'Vote Theft' Video
The impasse between the Congress and the Election Commission over allegations of 'vote theft' deepened on Saturday with the poll body fact-checking a video posted by the party, alleging that it was AI-generated and an attempt to mislead the voters of Bihar. The electoral rolls in the state, it said, are being prepared with transparency. Echoing allegations made by Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the video posted by the party handle on X on Saturday shows a woman saying votes had been "stolen" by showing voters who were alive as dead, an old man stating that 80 fake voters were registered at his one-room house, and another man claiming voting rights had been stolen. These portions of the video carry an 'AI generated' disclaimer. The video then goes on to call for the ouster of those who are involved in the "theft" of votes. In the text with the video, the party asks people to join Mr Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar from Sunday, which is being organised to protest 'vote theft' and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in the state. ❌This video is AI generated and not real ❌It is a clear attempt to mislead the people of Bihar #ECIFactCheck ✅Read in detail in the image attached 👇 — Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP) August 16, 2025 Fact-checking the post hours later, the Election Commission said the video is AI-generated and a "clear attempt to mislead the voters of Bihar". The SIR in Bihar, it said, is being prepared with transparency and the involvement of all stakeholders. "Electoral Rolls for each Assembly Constituency of Bihar are being prepared as per law and with full transparency by the concerned SDM/ERO (sub-divisional magistrates/electoral registration officer), full participation of over 90,000 BLOs (booth level officers), and full participation of all electors of that Assembly Constituency," the EC said in the post. Emphasising that political parties have also been involved, it added that there is "full participation of more than 1.6 Lakh BLAs (booth level agents) appointed by all the 12 recognised political parties in Bihar, including Indian National Congress". Charges, Defence In a presentation earlier this month, Mr Gandhi had accused the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP to carry out voter fraud and had shared details of an investigation carried out by the party in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment in Karnataka in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress and others have also said the names of people who are alive have been struck off the voter rolls during the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar. The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the EC to make the names of 65 lakh people taken off the rolls public and list the reasons for doing so, including the 22 lakh people that the poll body has said are dead. The other reasons for exclusion stated by the poll body earlier are people who have either permanently shifted from Bihar or were not found, people being enrolled as voters in multiple places. The Election Commission has maintained that the SIR process in Bihar is being conducted to ensure that the voter rolls are correct and has said that "every eligible voter" will be included. On Mr Gandhi's allegations, the EC has also said he should present proof and avoid using phrases like "vote chori", which it called an "assault on the integrity" of poll officials.

Students' union prez accuses state Cong chief of assault
Panaji: In another embarrassment for Congress, National Students' Union of India (NSUI) state president Naushad Chowdhari has filed a complaint with the national leadership against state Congress president Amit Patkar. According to the complaint, Patkar allegedly abused and manhandled Chowdhari during a clash at the party office on Aug 14. A written complaint was submitted to the NSUI national president, Varun Chaudhary, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in charge of Goa, Manikrao Thakre, and the AICC co-incharge for Goa, Anjali Nimbalkar. The incident occurred during Chowdhari's meeting with NSUI secretary in charge of Goa, Vaishnavi Bhardwaj. The complaint stated that Patkar was upset over being excluded from NSUI events and not being informed about Bhardwaj's visit to Goa. 'I calmly explained that I attempted to contact him multiple times, but my calls went unanswered. Despite this explanation, Patkar's demeanour became increasingly aggressive. In a shocking act, he pushed me on the stairway and attacked me and caught me by the collar of my shirt,' said Chowdhari in his complaint. The altercation was witnessed by Bhardwaj and state Congress general secretary Advocate Shrinivas Khalap. Chowdhari urged the AICC to take action against Patkar, warning that he will approach the Goa police if the party does not punish Patkar. The attack left him shaken and disrespected within the party, said Chowdhari. He said that Patkar's unprovoked aggression, vile language, and repeated attempts to demotivate him are unacceptable and against the principles of decency, respect, and discipline. The incident is expected to further demoralise the party workers and supporters. Exactly a month earlier, Patkar had written to the AICC seeking 'urgent' disciplinary action against Aldona MLA, Carlos Ferreira, for anti-party conduct.
