Seat-sharing formula for Mumbai civic election will depend on party strength, says CM Fadnavis

Mumbai: Seat-sharing for the
BMC election
will depend on the strength of the party, said CM
Devendra Fadnavis
in a town hall talk to a news channel on Wednesday.
Fadnavis said the BJP had 82 sitting corporators in the BMC (in the 2017 election) and 15 MLAs (2024 assembly election), the highest number of MLAs for any party in Mumbai.
He affirmed that elections will be fought as Mahayuti, but the number of seats that every party contests will depend on its strength.
The local body elections will be held in three phases from Oct to Dec for the zilla parishad, nagar panchayat, and municipal corporation, said Fadnavis.

On the development of Mumbai, Fadnavis said, "Mumbai will remain Mumbai — why should we try to make it like Shanghai or Singapore? Mumbai has its own character, and I believe that character is even better than that of Shanghai or Singapore."
He said they did far more for the Marathi manoos than the opposition. "The Marathi Manoos left Mumbai for far-flung areas while we settled the Marathi manoos in BDD chawls right there itself, giving him a 500 sq ft flat," said Fadnavis, adding that it was PM Narendra Modi who gave the Marathi language the status of a classical language.

BJP is stealing rights of tribals by ‘erasing papers', says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Thursday (August 14, 2025) said that the Bharatiya Janata Party had made 'Erase the papers, steal the rights' its new 'weapon to oppress Bahujans' in India, reacting to a report in The Hindu that showed several thousands of forest rights titles across three districts had seemingly disappeared from the Chhattisgarh government's records over the last 17 months. The report, published on August 14, looked at State government records for the implementation of Forest Rights Act of 2006, which showed that in Bastar, Rajnandgaon, and Bijapur districts, several thousand individual forest rights (IFR) titles and a couple dozen community forest resource rights (CFRR) titles that had already been distributed as of January 2024, were no longer showing up in records of May 2025, even though the FRA law does not provide for cancelling or withdrawing titles already distributed. "काग़ज़ मिटाओ, अधिकार चुराओ" – बहुजनों के दमन के लिए भाजपा ने यह नया हथियार बना लिया है। कहीं वोटर लिस्ट से दलितों, पिछड़ों के नाम कटा देते हैं, तो कहीं आदिवासियों के वन अधिकार पट्टों को ही 'गायब' करवा देते हैं। बस्तर में 2,788 और राजनांदगांव में आधे से ज़्यादा - छत्तीसगढ़ में… — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) August 14, 2025 State government officials have said that the increased numbers were a result of 'reporting error and miscommunication' and so the latest figures had been 'corrected' accordingly. Mr. Gandhi posted an image of the report on social media, saying in an accompanying post, 'Somewhere they remove the names of Dalits and Backward Classes from the voter list, and somewhere they make the forest rights titles of tribals 'disappear'.' He added that the 'Congress enacted the Forest Rights Act to protect the water, forest, and land of tribals — the BJP is weakening it and snatching their first right'. He said, 'We will not let this happen', promising to protect the rights of tribals, whom he referred to as 'first owners' of the country. Taking a cue from Mr. Gandhi, former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister T.S. Singh Deo too hit out at the BJP over the report, saying in a post on X, 'The forest rights lease is the shield that keeps the homes, property, and forests of the tribal community safe — we will not let it be destroyed in government conspiracies and bureaucratic manoeuvres.' Meanwhile, forest rights activists in Chhattisgarh from outfits such as the Hasdeo Aranya Bachao Sangharsh Samiti and the Van Adhikar Manch have alleged that they have been suspecting that for a few years now, 'there have been efforts to cancel titles that have been distributed', adding that this has happened across regimes. Alok Shukla of the Hasdeo Aranya Bachaon Sangharsh Samiti said, 'Even when there is no process to cancel titles, there is a history of this happening as far back as 2016 in Chhattisgarh when titles distributed in Ghatbarra village of Surguja district were found 'cancelled'. Even as the Chhattisgarh High Court is yet to determine if cancellation of titles is permissible, there have been other incidents of titles reducing.' Chhattisgarh Van Adhikar Manch convener Anubhav Shori said, 'Some methods of reducing FRA titles have been to physically ask the villagers to return titles distributed to them — this happened around 2022 in Mohla-Manpur district; in some cases, since there is no cancellation procedure, approved claims where titles have been distributed have been shown as a rejected claim with backdated paperwork.'

House passes bill to raise salary of legislators by 30%

Lucknow: The UP Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to allow 30% raise in legislators' salaries and allowances. The increased salary will be effective from April 1, 2025, finance minister Suresh Khanna told TOI and added that the much-awaited demand to link the salary with cost inflation index has also been heeded to. From now on, the salary of the legislators would be revised as per cost inflation index every five years, Khanna said and added that only a notification would be issued when the revision is effected. As per the bill, legislators' basic salary has been increased from the existing Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 while ministers' salary has been increased from existing Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000. The area allowance given to legislators has also been increased from the existing Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, the bill stated. The railway coupon has been increased from Rs 4.25 lakh per year to Rs 5 lakh per year. The increased Rs 5 lakh railway coupon will be 100% convertible. Earlier, of the Rs 4.25 lakh railway coupon, only Rs 3 lakh worth coupons were convertible to other means of transport like vehicle and flight while Rs 1.25 lakh coupon had to be mandatorily used as railway conveyance. The UP government has also increased legislators' personal assistance allowance from existing Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 while medical allowance has also been increased from Rs 30,000 to Rs 45,000. The daily allowance to legislators has also been increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 while the House sitting allowance has been increased from existing Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500, Khanna said while tabling the bill. Telephone allowance has also been increased from existing Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000, Khanna said. Allowance and pension for the ex-MLA has also been increased from Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh, including Railway coupons. Similarly, family pension has also been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000, Khanna said and added in the case of death of the MLA and his or her spouse, children will get the family pension evenly distributed among the number of siblings. However, if the spouse of the MLA is alive, the family pension will go to the spouse. Since the increased salary will be effective from April 1, 2025, the arrears will be given to the legislators when the next salary would be given. The increased salary of the legislators will give an additional burden of over Rs 100 crore annually. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 119 voters in one house! Cong alleges ‘vote theft'

Nagpur: The Congress unit in Ghugus has alleged sweeping irregularities in the electoral rolls of Chandrapur assembly constituency, claiming the anomalies amounted to an orchestrated attempt at rigging. The party has claimed that 119 voters spanning multiple caste and religious backgrounds are registered from one single location — house No. 350 in Chemical ward of Ghugus — owned by one Sachin Bandurkar. Party functionaries who visited the address said the property was vacant "for a long time." Ghugus unit chief of the Congress Raju Reddy said the home is roughly 600 square feet, calling the entry of voters from that place "implausible by any measure." Further scrutiny of the voter lists, Reddy said, turned up addresses with "zero" house numbers and several entries showing more than 100 voters at a single location. In Pipri village, nearly 100 voters are shown as residing under one household. "If the entire Chandrapur assembly voters' list is closely scrutinised, over 1,000 such locations — used for registering bogus voters — are likely to surface," Reddy claimed. —Vaibhav Ganjapure & Mazhar Ali Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
