4-star DL James Johnson flips to Texas from Georgia

Miami Herald16-07-2025
Four-star defensive lineman James Johnson changed his mind and said he will play at Texas instead of Georgia.
The previous commitment of Johnson, from Northwestern High School in Miami, was short-lived. He made his pledge to Georgia on June 28 and decommitted Tuesday.
He took official visits to both schools, as well as to Miami, Florida State and Florida over the past six weeks.
The 247Sports composite lists the 6-foot-2, 285-pound prospect as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the Class of 2026.
Johnson's commitment added to an already stellar week for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian.
On Tuesday, Tyler Atkinson, the No. 1 linebacker in the 2026 recruiting class, committed to Texas.
Atkinson, who plays at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., is ranked No. 9 overall, No. 1 at his position and No. 1 in the Peach State by the 247Sports composite.
With the commitments of Johnson and Atkinson, the Longhorns' 2026 class now ranks No. 6 in the nation, per the 247Sports composite.

North Texas teen with spina bifida commits to college wheelchair basketball team, sets eyes for 2028 Paralympic Games

From Red Oak to Mizzou, Jeraldo Henry Jr. is chasing greatness — on and off the court. Early morning practices, intense workouts and road trips for national tournaments. For most teenagers, it might sound overwhelming — but for Jeraldo Henry Jr., it's all part of the plan. The 18-year-old wheelchair basketball standout from Red Oak, Texas, is heading to the University of Missouri this fall with a clear goal in mind: earn a college degree, continue competing at the highest level and make it to the 2028 Paralympic Games. "It's been a goal ever since I started playing to make it to the Paralympics," he said. Jeraldo Henry Jr. has been playing wheelchair basketball since he was four years old. Now, he competes nationally with two elite programs: the Dallas Jr. Wheelchair Mavericks and the Texas Outlaws, an adult-level team. He recently committed to Mizzou's collegiate wheelchair basketball team — a major step on his road to Team USA. "[I'm] mostly training a lot, like pretty much every day with my dad outside. Even if it's hot, we still go outside, shoot some hoops, just trying to get to the level where I want to be at," he said. His talent and drive have earned him national recognition, including the Timothy J. Nugent High School Academic All-America Award, which honors both academic and athletic excellence. Jeraldo Henry Jr.'s ability to excel both on the court and in the classroom is made possible through Texas Online Preparatory School (TOPS) — a fully accredited online public school program. Through virtual learning, he maintains a 4.03 GPA, even while managing frequent travel, training and medical challenges. "If I have classwork or homework, I take it on the road and open my laptop wherever I am," he said. His mom, Christina Henry, said that the flexibility of TOPS has played a key role in his success. "He set a goal: to play in college and make Team USA. TOPS gave him the flexibility to make it happen," Christina Henry said. His impact extends beyond sports. Alongside his mother, he co-authored a motivational book for teens called The NARWHALS' Way: A Framework for Teenage Happiness. The book offers tools and encouragement for overcoming life's obstacles — something he knows firsthand. "If you think we couldn't get any closer," Christina Henry said, "writing the book got us even closer." As he heads to Mizzou to study nutrition and exercise physiology, Christina Henry's advice remains simple and powerful: "Stay driven. And when you can't drive yourself — find someone who can, until you're ready to get back in the driver's seat." From basketball courts in North Texas to national arenas, Jeraldo Henry Jr.'s journey is far from over — and he's not slowing down anytime soon. Whether it's representing Mizzou, mentoring younger athletes, or aiming for gold with Team USA, Junior is focused, fearless and fully committed to living a life with no limits. "It's not about how you start," his mom said. "It's about how you live."

CBS analyst predicts potential Red River Showdown in College Football Playoff

Oklahoma and Texas have met on the football field at least once every single year since 1929. The last time they faced each other twice in a season was in 2018 in the Sooners' Big 12 championship win over the Longhorns. But if one CBS Sports football analyst's prediction comes true, the two schools may do so again this season. Bud Elliott, who hosts a show for CBS Sports and 247Sports, released his College Football Playoff predictions on Wednesday. In it, he has the Sooners as the No. 11 seed facing No. 6 Clemson in the first round. Were the Sooners to win that game and Elliott's projection hold, OU would face No. 3 Texas in the national semifinals. To make it to the playoff, Oklahoma would have to outperform its preseason rankings. The Sooners enter the season ranked outside the Top 25 in the first USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. They're barely out of the Top 25, though, picking up the most poll points of any unranked team, checking in at a de facto No. 26. Texas is atop the poll, ranked No. 1 in FBS in the preseason. Last year, Texas rolled over Oklahoma, 34-3, in a season that didn't go the Sooners' way. OU finished 6-7 for the second time in coach Brent Venables' three years. The Longhorns, on the other hand, went 13-3, making the College Football Playoff for the second straight season, ultimately falling in the national semifinals to eventual national champion Ohio State. Those two schools open their regular season against each other this year on August 30 as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. If the Red River rivals were to meet in the College Football Playoff, it would be a showdown of the two most talked about quarterbacks in the country in 2025, John Mateer and Arch Manning. There will be a ton of buzz surrounding the two signal callers throughout the season, and how they fare against SEC defenses will determine a lot about how the SEC season will go. Texas was picked to win the Southeastern Conference during SEC Media Days. OU was picked 10th in the 16-team league. Oklahoma opens its season August 30 against FCS Illinois State before an opportunity to make a statement comes week two against the Michigan Wolverines. Cowboys Training Camp: Takeaways from Practice 14, Oxnard is Over, update on Diggs injury

The Dallas Cowboys have concluded their final West Coast practice of the 2025 calendar, and they are set to pack up and return to Texas in advance of their second preseason game. The Baltimore Ravens will meet them in Arlington for a Saturday night matchup, but aside from a walkthrough and some media availability on Thursday, it's a wrap on yet another four-week stint on Oxnard, CA. Wednesday's practice was highlighted by a sensational interception by a defensive lineman, giving some hints as far as what can be expected once the games count, as the Cowboys' new coaching staff continues to commit to the hide-and-no-seek mantra when it comes to what they'll reveal during the exhibition season. Here are the biggest takeaways from the final training camp practice of 2025. Sam Williams' Pick-6 Late in practice, working on goal-line situations, Dak Prescott was intercepted by defensive end Sam Williams. Williams returned the interception the entire length of the field for a Practice Pick-6. That's Dante Fowler (13) lined up wide of right tackle Terence Steele. Rookie DE Donovan Ezeiruaku (41) is standing up in the C gap and DT Solomon Thomas in the A gap. On the OL's left side, that's Mazi Smith (58) and Marshawn Kneeland (94) taking on the LG and LT, with Kenneth Murray (59) and finally Williams (54). Running Back Depth Chart According to Dallas News' Calvin Watkins, the running back pecking order seems to be settling in. Vaughn got first-team reps again. But as camp is on the cusp of closing, it seems Javonte Williams has the lead as the Week 1 starter at running back. The backup is between Hunter Luepke, Jaydon Blue and Miles Sanders. Injury Updates LT Tyler Guyton (broken knee) began working on the resistance cords on Wednesday, per ESPN's Todd Archer RB Miles Sanders (knee) returned to team drills DE Payton Turner (ribs) returned to practice RB Jaydon Blue still isn't practicing with his knee/ankle issue Trevon Diggs has ramped up to daily sessions with trainer Britt Brown, also doing ball drills Steal of the draft? The Cowboys double-dipped at running back in the spring, taking two on Day 3 in fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue and seventh-round pick Phil Mafah. Mickey Spagnola had an interesting tidbit on Wednesday that may help explain how a battering ram like Mafah fell that far despite having back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at Clemson. In an extremely deep running back class, Mafah played his final year in college with a torn labrum, and wasn't able to work out for teams in the pre-draft process. There's an assumption the Cowboys are going to carry both veteran RBs they signed this summer, but that may not be the case. MIcah Check Still no update on renewed contract talks between Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons, both who brushed off questions about progress or trade talk.
