Economy Minister Rafizi seen at 46th Asean Summit
KUALA LUMPUR: Amid talk that he would resign from Cabinet after the PKR polls, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli continues to carry out his official duties at the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits.
The Economy Minister was seen attending the 16th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) summit at the KL Convention Centre that began at 8am Tuesday (May 27).
Rafizi was seen at the summit, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
Rafizi was also seen shaking hands with Anwar and other Asean delegates.
Mohamad was seen sitting next to Rafizi while Anwar was sitting just in front of them.
Other leaders present there were Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, and Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto.
The leaders then proceeded to take a group picture before the summit began and Anwar was seen standing next to Marcos and Prabowo, while Rafizi stood next to Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn.
Marcos then delivered his opening remarks at the summit before a closed-door session began.
The second day of the Asean Summit will see the second Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit taking place.
Anwar is also expected to deliver an exit press conference after the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits concludes on Tuesday (May 27) evening.
On May 7, Rafizi said he would be ready to step down from his party and Cabinet posts if he lost the deputy president post in the PKR polls.
Rafizi said he would return to be a grassroots level leader and campaign intensively for the party.
Rafizi was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar for the PKR deputy president's post in the party polls.

Anwar: No nation is safe when racial hatred thrives
CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to reject attempts to incite racial hatred and not be swayed by those exploiting sensitive issues to divide national unity. Speaking at a town hall during the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE), he reminded the audience that Malaysians must rise above destructive tendencies. "Remember, we are anak Malaysia who should love our country. "We must put an end to this destructive culture of corruption and racism, of inciting racial hatred, constant quarrelling, provoking and insulting religion or race. "This is not education. Education should lead us towards good and transformation," he said. He added that the country must be safeguarded against such elements, including bullying and abuse. Anwar said that Malaysia is a nation of laws with a firm legal system, and that violations would be dealt with regardless of a person's status or background. "This is a nation of laws with rules that must be respected. The National Unity Ministry exists because, to me, political stability is essential. "This country must also learn from others. Nowhere in the world has racial or religious hatred ever brought safety or stability," he said at the Temu Anwar programme. He was responding to a student's question on government efforts to strengthen unity and combat racism. "No country can remain safe if voices of racial or religious hatred are allowed to flourish. We must be firm in ensuring no one fans such divisions," he said. The prime minister also praised the maturity of today's youth in prioritising unity. "My outlook is very hopeful when I see young people today being positive and mature in their views on unity. But we must also recognise there are still groups trying to incite and distort facts," he added. Citing the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Anwar again stressed that the government has never concealed facts or protected anyone. "If it involves murder or bullying, I don't care whose child it is — if a crime has been committed, we will investigate and prosecute," he said. Also present at the launch were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. MMU's new FAIE will feature state-of-the-art laboratories to foster creativity and collaboration between students, researchers and industry partners, ensuring graduates remain competitive in the digital economy. The faculty will introduce a new Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Applied AI) programme, a three-year full-time course beginning in July 2025. Existing engineering programmes will also be enhanced with AI components to equip students with advanced technological skills. Applied AI covers technologies such as machine learning and automation to address real-world challenges, including smart healthcare, autonomous vehicles, intelligent farming and personalised digital assistants.

Bursa CEO: Malaysia's capital market resilient, poised for growth
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's capital market remains resilient and well-positioned for growth, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed said. This is supported by strong fundamentals, proactive policies and rising opportunities in strategic sectors. "The strong momentum of initial public offerings (IPOs) reflects the confidence of Malaysian businesses, as they expand and tap the capital market to power their next phase of growth," he said on the sidelines of Invest Malaysia 2025 series (IM 2025) in Singapore today. As at Aug 1 this year, Bursa Malaysia had 39 IPOs listed, a 39 per cent increase year-on-year compared to the same period in 2024, said Fad'l. It maintained lead position in the Asean region for total number of IPO listings, and total IPOs funds raised," Fad'l said. "This demonstrates a thriving market where companies are growing, creating value and offering opportunities for investment. "As a multi-asset exchange, Bursa Malaysia remains committed to enhancing the vibrancy and depth of our markets, to support Malaysia's economic momentum and propel its competitiveness globally," he added. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, in his keynote address highlighted that shifting global trade dynamics are reshaping supply chains. This suggests that open economies such as Malaysia and Asean need to be responsive and build resilience. He outlined Malaysia's priorities as Asean chair to strengthen regional resilience and position the region as an investible asset class, while calling for deeper regional economic integration to safeguard the region's growth trajectory in an increasingly fragmented global economy. Tengku Zafrul continued his insights in a fireside chat moderated by Fad'l where the conversation turned to how Asean and Malaysia can navigate external shocks from US-China tariff tensions. He elaborated that there is potential for the region to turn these disruptions into opportunities to position itself as a base for global manufacturers seeking stability and resilience. Malaysia, in particular, has strengthened its edge against regional peers This is supported by disciplined industrial and economic reforms, the development of high-tech hubs in Penang and Kedah, as well as special economic zones aimed at attracting strategic investments in electrical & electronics, EVs, and advanced manufacturing. Tengku Zafrul added that the current period of volatility could serve as a springboard for Malaysia to accelerate its move into higher-value sectors, with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) providing the long-term policy certainty, targeted incentives, and "safe harbour" measures needed to secure investor confidence. IM 2025 in Singapore is Bursa Malaysia's flagship programme in collaboration with the Macquarie Asean Conference 2025. Since its inception in 2005, Invest Malaysia has expanded its reach globally with 61 Invest Malaysia Away editions hosted in major financial centres worldwide. In 2025 alone, the series made its mark in London (January), followed by the Invest Asean-Malaysia here in June, each reinforcing Malaysia's position as a vibrant and attractive investment destination.
