Rishabh Pant's fractured foot in a cast, India Test vice-captain expresses frustration

Indian Express3 days ago
Rishabh Pant has vented his frustration over his plastered foot and posted a photo of the same on his Instagram stories on Wednesday. Pant Pant was struck on his left foot during the first day of an epic Test match between India and England at Old Trafford. The five-match series itself has been rated as among the greatest of this century and Pant was at the forefront as India's vice-captain and arguably their most consistent run scorer in the format going into it. He lived up to that reputation by scoring centuries in both innings of the first Test as well.
'I hate this sooo much,' said Pant in his story in a text on the picture of his plastered foot. Pant had to be taken off the field on a golf cart after suffering the injury on Day 1. In a late night meeting that day, the BCCI medical team said the wicket-keeper would need six weeks of rest. But could he just bat for this Test with the help of pain-killers, they were asked. 'He could, if need be,' was the answer.
As it turned out, Pant did travel to the stadium and he hobbled his way down the steps in full batting gear as well to continue his innings after Shardul Thakur was dismissed. He had retired hurt on 37 and he ended up scoring 54 in 75 balls. Pant was hailed for his efforts in the innings. India head coach Gautam Gambhir said after the match, which India drew against all odds, that the 'character and foundation of the team' will be built on what Pant did.
'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot,' said Gambhir. 'Not many people have done that in the past, and he had put his hand up and that is why I say it. Any amount of praise [is not enough]. I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this, and generations coming forward should talk about it that there is someone who's batted with a broken foot.
'It's unfortunate because of the kind of form he was in, but again, he's an important member of the Test side, and I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly, and try and deliver again for us,' Gambhir said.

"Should've Said No": Sachin Tendulkar Slammed By India Great On Renaming Of Pataudi Trophy

The five-match Test series between India and England ended in a 2-2 draw, giving fans a memorable cricketing action. This series, which was Shubman Gill 's first stint as India's Test captain, was renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy from the iconic Patuadi Trophy. This move grabbed everyone's attention as many fans and former cricketers raised their voices and stated that it was an insult to the great Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. However, the series was still renamed in the honour of former England pacer James Anderson and India great Sachin Tendulkar. Recently, India great Karsan Ghavri slammed the BCCI and even Sachin for not taking a firm stand against the change of the series name. He even name dropped Sunil Gavaskar and stated that if the name of Border-Gavaskar would have been changed then the former opener "would have shake the whole India". "That is very wrong. Number one, the Australia-West Indies series is always called the Frank Worrell Trophy. The India-Australia Trophy is always called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will shake the whole of India)," Ghavri told Vicky Lalwani on the latter's YouTube channel. "The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger's name shouldn't have been removed," he added. Ghavri then went on to criticise Sachin for not "putting his foot down" and not honouring the stature of Pataudi. "In the same context, when it came to Sachin Tendulkar, that this trophy would be changed, and this trophy would be named after you and Anderson, Sachin should've said no. Objection is different," said Ghavri. "In the first place, you should've put your foot down and should've said 'No, I don't want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy's name should remain the same'. First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature," he added.

‘I'm hitting on my coach': Movie star Eiza Gonzalez shares pictures of boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov returning after injury

Grigor Dimitrov disappointed his many fans when he withdrew from the upcoming US Open, bringing to an end a very strong streak of 58 consecutive appearances at Grand Slam tournaments. The Bulgarian star had to withdraw due to a pectoral strain suffered during his Wimbledon clash against Jannik Sinner, where he had the world number one against the ropes. Grigor Dimitrov and Eiza Gonzalez have been dating since April 2025.(Instagram) Nevertheless, good news for Dimitrov and his fans, presented via the Instagram stories of his partner and Hollywood actress Eiza Gonzalez. Dimitrov was seen already having returned to court, albeit in a more casual and low-key sense, as Gonzalez shared a series of images of the pair playing tennis together on her Instagram stories. Gonzalez, the star of Netflix TV series '3 Body Problem' alongside a range of action movies, captioned images of her being helped out by Dimitrov, playfully stating 'I am hitting on my coach.' Dimitrov and Gonzalez have been dating since April 2025, when the Mexican actress was seen in his player's box during several important tournaments. Gonzalez isn't the Bulgarian's first high-profile romantic partner: he dated tennis superstar Maria Sharapova in the early 2010s, before a long-term relationship with American musical artist Nicole Scherzinger. Gonzalez with consoling words for 'love of my life' Dimitrov The connect between Gonzalez and Dimitrov was made clear following the 34-year-old's heartbreaking retirement against world number one Sinner, after which he required medical attention in a hospital. Reposting an image of Dimitrov in a hospital bed recovering from his pectoral injury, Gonzalez penned a heartfelt public message hoping for his recovery. 'Love of my life. I couldn't be more proud of you. You are BEYOND outstanding… This is just a moment that will pass and will make you even stronger,' the Hollywood star had written on her Instagram story. Dimitrov was forced to walk off the court despite leading two sets to none, suffering a freak injury and leading to some truly heartbreaking scenes for one of the best-liked players on tour. Good news, then, both for Gonzalez and Dimitrov as he marked his return to the tennis court and even found some time to ease himself back into playing condition before the latter stages of the tennis calendar. The Bulgarian has played some of his best tennis in recent years, living up to the potential that always seemed to evade him in his 20s. The Wimbledon performance against Sinner is one tennis fans will remember for a while yet, but the hope will remain that the Bulgarian can truly contest for a grand slam title befitting one of the most exciting players on the tour, even in his veteran years.

Sachin Tendulkar Slammed As India Legend's Stature Degraded: 'Sunil Gavaskar Poore Hindustan Ko Hila Dega'

Karsan Ghavri says by renaming India-England Test series to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Tiger Pataudi's name has been degraded. The criticism over the renaming of India-England Test series continues with former pacer Karsan Ghavri slamming the administrators for removing legendary captain Tiger Pataudi's name from the trophy. The winner of the Test series between the two teams in England was traditionally presented with Pataudi Trophy. However, it was rechristened to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year resulting in backlash. Ghavri has challenged to rename the Border-Gavaskar Trophy – played for the Test series between India and Australia – and then brace for the reaction from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. 'That is very wrong. Number one, Pataudi Trophy has been going on for a long time. The Australia-West Indies series has always been called Frank Worrell Trophy. India-Australia Test series has always been called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Try changing the name of that and see what Gavaskar does. Wo poora Hindustan ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar would've shaken the whole country). The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger's name should not be removed from the trophy," said Ghavri on Vicky Lalwani's YouTube channel. What Tendulkar Said on Renaming While acknowledging that it wasn't in his power to ensure that Pataudi Trophy wasn't retired, Tendulkar did reveal he spoke to the administrators that the legacy should continue in some manner. '…I was determined to ensure that the (Pataudi) legacy was kept intact," Tendulkar told Revsportz. 'When I got to know, I called the (Pataudi) family and had a conversation. Thereafter, I spoke to Mr. Jay Shah (ICC chairman), the BCCI and the ECB, and mentioned to them that something had to be done to ensure the legacy stayed on." 'They heard my point of view, and thereafter we got on a second call where it was decided that the Pataudi name will be associated with the series, and the winning captain will be awarded the Pataudi Medal of Excellence. I have always respected my seniors, and did everything in my power to make sure that the Pataudi legacy continues to be associated with this series," he added. Ghavri though says Tendulkar could have done more to ensure the trophy was not discontinued. 'Objection is different. In the first place, he (Tendulkar) should've put his foot down and should've said 'Don't use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's one of our legends. If you want to give medals, use our name and hand it to the winning team. Trophy's name should've remained the same'," he said. 'BCCI is everything. First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature," he added. view comments First Published: News cricket Sachin Tendulkar Slammed As India Legend's Stature Degraded: 'Sunil Gavaskar Poore Hindustan Ko Hila Dega' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
