Caitlin Clark pulls out of All-Star weekend due to groin injury

NBC News17-07-2025
INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark is out of All-Star weekend.
The Indiana Fever guard injured her right groin on Tuesday night in the final minute of the team's win over the Connecticut Sun. She said Thursday in a message posted on X that she was "sad and disappointed" to pull out of the All-Star Game and 3-Point Contest.
Clark was supposed to compete in a loaded 3-point contest Friday night and is the captain of one of the All-Star teams. The second-year guard was the leading vote getter from the fans and has been a huge reason the league has had a boon in attendance and ratings over the last two seasons.

Third sex toy thrown onto court at WNBA game

A sex toy was thrown at Sophie Cunningham, the Indiana Fever forward, as the WNBA continues to wrestle with the issue of erotic objects being hurled on courts this season. The Indiana Fever forward was struck during her team's 100-91 loss to Los Angeles Sparks at the Arena on Tuesday night. It comes four days after Cunningham attempted to deter fans from throwing sex toys on court by posting on X. this did NOT age well. — Sophie Cunningham (@sophaller) August 6, 2025 The 28-year-old later added: 'No way that actually hit me, I know I should not have tweeted that.' The match was briefly stopped as a result of the incident before it was kicked off the court by players. It is the third time in seven days that WNBA games have been disrupted by sex toys thrown from the crowd. When has this happened before? The first time one of the green adult toys were thrown onto the court during a game was at the Golden State Valkyries 77-75 victory over Atlanta Dream in Georgia on Tuesday last week. The man alleged to have thrown the toy, Delbert Carver, was arrested last Saturday and charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass. Carver has been released from Clayton County Jail in Georgia on bond. The second incident happened during the third quarter of last Friday's Valkyries 73-66 victory over Chicago Sky at the Wintrust Arena and was widely condemned. Why is this happening? While it was assumed after the first time that this was a bizarre one-off, the act seems to have turned into a trend. It is unclear why spectators are throwing a specific type of green sex toy onto courts at WNBA games and it is also not known if the incidents are related or just 'copycat' incidents. It has been suggested it could be a protest against women's basketball, but no organisation have come forward claiming it was because of their cause. What has been said? Sky centre Elizabeth Williams told reporters after the first incident in Chicago last week that the act was 'super disrespectful' and said: 'Whoever is doing it just needs to grow up.' The WNBA also put out a statement explaining that any culprit found guilty of throwing objects onto the field of play will be issued with ejection and a one-year ban. 'The safety and wellbeing of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league.' The WNBA has said in a statement, 'Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans.' The League continued: 'In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.' After the LA Sparks win last night, LA coach Lynne Roberts told reporters: 'I think it's ridiculous, it's dumb, it's stupid. It's also dangerous and players' safety is number one. Respecting the game. All those things. I think it's really stupid.'

Kilcoo star opens up on how illness battle has given him fresh drive to taste success

He may have won All-Ireland, Ulster and Down silverware with his club, but even though he has rendered 13 years' service to the Kilcoo cause, Devlin is particularly keen to see his side extend their stay in the honours list. A viral infection restricted his involvement with Kilcoo earlier in 2025 and hospitalised him for a spell, which is one of the reasons why he is so eager to don the jersey again. Indeed, his appetite has been further whetted as Kilcoo brace to meet Bryansford in their Championship opener at Liatroim Fontenoys on August 25. Kilcoo are now under the management of Monaghan man Martin Corey and Tyrone All-Ireland winner Joe McMahon, with the experienced Paddy Crozier having a key role to play as well. For now, though, nothing is being taken for granted as Kilcoo set out to try and recapture the glory days they have experienced in recent years. 'There is no doubt that the club has tasted success, but we cannot sit back and bask in that,' points out Devlin. 'We are very keen to make further progress, and with a good management team in charge of operations, we feel that we can possibly make headway again. 'Obviously, other clubs will be keen to get their hands on the Down title, but we have to live with that.' The fact that Kilcoo have won six Down titles in a row has heaped a little more pressure on the side, but with some new faces having come in, hopes are high that the team might be able to extend their lucrative sequence. The fact that the team won Ulster titles in 2019 and 2021 and lifted the All-Ireland title under Mickey Moran in 2022 has further cemented Kilcoo's reputation as one of the most consistent teams in the country. But Devlin fired out a warning shot as his team prepare to step up their Championship preparations. 'The fact of the matter is that there are several teams in the mix who could potentially win the Down title this year, and you can be sure that we will not be resting on our laurels,' says Devlin. 'I certainly missed being involved in the action when I was out ill in the earlier part of the year and, to be honest, I am keen to make up for lost time. Obviously, competition for places in the team is particularly keen.' The Kilcoo side still carries considerable experience, with five members of the famed Branagan clan – Darryl, Niall, Aidan, Aaron and Eugene – joined by Johnston duo Ryan and Jerome along with Ryan McAvoy, Dylan Ward and Anthony Morgan among others. 'We will be ready for the Championship, and I just hope that we can extend our winning ways,' smiles Devlin.
