Sam Gardiner's family 'overwhelmed' by support
Mr Gardiner, 24, who took part in the BBC show alongside his mother Jo, died in hospital following a crash on the A34 near Manchester on 26 May.
His family set up a fundraiser in his memory for the National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) charity which has raised more than £10,000.
Ms Gardiner said her son had been diagnosed with the condition, which can develop when someone has been exposed to alcohol in the womb, and added: "If some good comes of this tragedy, it will be that FASD is better understood".
"We have been overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of messages of love and support on social media and in comments to press reporting," she said.
"We would like to thank the BBC, Studio Lambert and everyone at Race Across The World production, fellow contestants and fans of the show for all their support at this terrible time.
"It has been very comforting to know that Sam touched so many people."
Ms Gardiner said she had been "particularly moved by all the messages that Sam was an inspiration to many who have been impacted by FASD".
"We adopted Sam and he was diagnosed with FASD. As viewers of season two will recall, this was a big challenge both for Sam and for us as his parents," she said.
But she added that the National FASD charity "helped us on that journey".
The landscape gardener died when his car left the road and rolled before landing on its side on the A34 in Gatley, Cheadle, Greater Manchester Police said.
He was the only person in the white Volkswagen Golf R estate and was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries on 29 May.
Mr Gardiner and his mother travelled across Mexico and Argentina in the BBC show, broadcast in March 2020.
His father Andrew said: "When the news broke last week, friends asked how they could help.
"After some thought, I decided to set up a JustGiving page to raise money for National FASD in memory of Sam.
"The page is called Sam Gardiner; Super Human."
He said it was "very humbling to see the Race Around The World family rally to this worthy cause".
A message on its official Instagram account said: "Sam lived his life full of love, exuberance and adventure as seen on BBC's Race Across the World.
"National FASD is both humbled and honoured to help carry on his legacy via donations coming from hundreds."

EastEnders actor died broke with no will, records show
EastEnders actor Nicholas Ball died broke and left nothing to his wife, legal documents show. The actor died aged 78 last year following a short battle with illness. He played Terry Bates in the BBC soap and also had roles in Footballers' Wives and Hazell. But records show Ball, of Porchester Square, London, left no will and nothing in his estate. A High Court document shows administration of the estate was granted to his wife Ayda. It reads: 'The application has stated that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom amounts to £0 and the net value amounts to £0.' READ MORE: Great British Bake Off's Sandi Toksvig says exactly why she left show READ MORE: Discount app 'better than Blue Light Card' could save households £2,000 The couple married in 2019 after they had been together for more than 20 years. She revealed his death in June last year saying: "It is with the heaviest and broken of hearts, that I share the loss of my beloved Nicky-Nicholas Ball." Ball had been married to actress and psychologist Pamela Stephenson from 1978 to 1984. She left him for comedian Billy Connolly. Ball had a long acting career but reportedly struggled for parts after private eye series Hazell ended. He had played a number of supporting roles in various television series including Z-Cars, Softly Softly: Task Force, The Young Ones, Bergerac, Tales of the Unexpected, Casualty, and Holby City. Director Keith English paid tribute to him after his death, saying: "Fabulous as star of hit TV show 'Hazell' in the 1980s, Nick was a terrific actor - kind and generous. He starred in our short film 'Top Dog' in 2001 in which he was great and we became life-long friends with him and his wife, Ayda Kay. "Indeed, we were honoured when the pair of them asked if they could be married in our garden in 2019. A fabulous affair. "One of our fondest memories was going to see Jerry Goldsmith play The Royal Albert Hall with him and his great friend Mel Smith. "Mel had hired a box for the show. Both men were known hell-raisers and, sure enough, when the four of us rolled up they were both fairly merry and proceeded to football-chant 'There's only one Jerry Goldsmith!' between musical pieces to an uneven response from the rest of the auditorium. "Nick was a loving husband, friend and a wonderful actor. We enjoyed every minute of his company. Farewell and bon voyage."

MasterChef ripped for ‘disgraceful' Gregg Wallace edit as clip from scandal-hit series goes viral
MasterChef viewers have accused the BBC of 'disgraceful' editing after spotting what appeared to be repeated and awkwardly cut clips of axed host Gregg Wallace in the latest episode. Wallace and his long-time co-presenter John Torode were dropped from the cooking competition last month, following nearly two decades on air, after an investigation upheld multiple misconduct allegations. Wallace faced 40 upheld complaints, including claims of inappropriate on-set behaviour, while Torode was found to have used a racist term in 2018. The current series was filmed before their dismissal, with producers confirming the pair would still appear but with less screen time and minimal screentime. Two contestants have also requested to be removed from episodes to avoid being seen alongside the former presenters. And now amid the furore, fans watching Wednesday night's episode noticed the same shot of Wallace's face, that of a fixed grin, used multiple times in quick succession. One TikTok user Gingernat Design pointed out the editing gaf, captioning their post: 'Clever editing from MasterChef. 'Whether this is to do with the allegations or not I don't know, but it's jokes how they just froze Gregg Wallace for an entire conversation.' A viral TikTok clip highlighted the repeated footage, showing Wallace's frozen expression appearing three times during a conversation between Torode and a contestant. Reactions on social media ranged from disbelief to 'awkward' and 'petty.' 'I saw this and it looked absolutely demented,' one wrote. Another commented: 'Is this for real?' while a third penned: 'I'm crying and they picked a clip where he looks SO dodgy. Not helpful at all considering the recent allegations.' Under the same clip, another user, who claimed they work in TV production, suggested that the team behind the show used an industry editing trick. 'I work in post production in UK TV (not for the BBC or on Masterchef though), and based on the turnaround time, it was probably the quickest fix they could do, ' they clarified. 'Just reuse the previous shot to cover up any cut content. The Hosts certainly wouldn't be able to be completely edited out, however, unless they reshot all their bits with new hosts and spliced them in, but that wouldn't really ever happen due to money.' The Standard has contacted Banijay UK for comment on the claims about the apparent repetitive edits. The viewer commentary comes after a second contestant was edited out of the latest series of MasterChef. A Banijay spokesperson told The Standard: 'One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included. 'We have of course accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' BBC News reported that the contestant has requested anonymity and will not appear in any capacity. MasterChef is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now and airs on BBC One.

Strictly's 2025 celebs ranked — who'll sparkle and who's doomed?
Here's our breakdown of Strictly Come Dancing's 2025 celebrity line-up, with predictions ranging from potential winners to early exits. I know we've been saying it every year since around 2017, but this time it really does feel like the BBC has finally succeeded in creating the worst line-up in Strictly Come Dancing history. If you were being kind, you might say it's a mixed bag. If you were being honest, you'd say it's a reject's bag. It's less of a "Who's who?" of showbiz, more of a "Who's said no?" No genuine A-lister to be seen, and far too many reality show refugees. Still, I guess it could have been worse. With those recent backstage cocaine allegations in mind, I guess we're just lucky some the casting team hadn't taken up the baton from Celebrity SAS and booked the other one from the Peru Two. You can criticise the BBC all you like for this state of affairs, but I place the blame squarely on one man's shoulders. Simon Cowell. When he ruined The X Factor, he gave the BBC a free run on Saturday nights. Now we've reached the stage where the Strictly bookers know it doesn't really matter who they sign up, because the viewers will almost certainly still tune in regardless. It's a risky strategy, for sure. Once I've taken you through this year's fifteen Glitterball hunters, you can decide whether you think the Beeb has taken a gamble too far. Dani Dyer "Listen you slags, there's no way you're getting a proper geezer like me on that dancefloor. Book my daughter though, and I might come and sit on your front row one week." I'm not saying that's the exact conversation Danny Dyer had with the Strictly team, but you have to wonder what daughter Dani Dyer has done lately to deserve a slot. However, her likability factor is high, and I've heard she's a bit of a mover. Predicted finish: 1st Ellie Goldstein Given the recent success of Chris McCausland and Rose Ayling-Ellis, I think we can assume that the Strictly voters are all in favour of inclusivity. With that in mind, only a fool would bet against Ellie Goldstein, who was the first model with Down syndrome to appear on the cover of British Vogue, making it to the final. She's got the personality, and if it turns out she can dance half as well as Chris and Rose, she could even nick it. Predicted finish: 2nd George Clarke If you ask me, Strictly started going downhill when it started signing up YouTubers and social media influencer types. Unfortunately, quite a few of them have been quite useful on the dancefloor, so I suppose I'll have to just suck it up. The kids will block vote for George Clarke even if he stinks the joint out. Predicted finish: 3rd Vicky Pattinson Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattinson won I'm A Celebrity a decade ago, so she definitely knows her way around a popularity contest. Whether she knows her way around a ballroom is another matter. Despite her claims that she's not a dancer, I have a feeling she might be a quick learner. Predicted finish: 4th Harry Aikines-Aryeetey/Balvinder Sopal I've put these two hopefuls together because "You have to have a Gladiator" appears to have become the new "You have to have an EastEnder". Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, aka Nitro, did the Christmas Special last year, so we already know he isn't hopeless on the dancefloor. As for Balvinder Sopal, the Walford mob usually do OK, so unless she's got two left feet, she should pull in a few votes. Predicted finish: 5th & 6th Stefan Dennis I'm expecting big things from Stefan Dennis, this year's nostalgia booking, although the fact that his record company clearly didn't trust him enough to dance in the video for Don't It Make You Feel Good is making me a tad nervous. The fact that, at 66, the Neighbours legend is also this year's oldest contestant don't make me feel any gooder. Nostalgia though, is a powerful drug. Predicted finish: 7th Karen Carney After the summer the England women's football team have had, I can see why the BBC wanted some of that Lioness magic on the show. The bookers were never going to get one of the current squad to sign up, so some viewers might see stylish pro-turned-pundit Karen Carney as a lazy token gesture by the Beeb. However, if she lands a good partner she could stick around. Predicted finish: 8th. Alex Kingston Alex Kingston is arguably the biggest name this year. She's best known these days for playing River Song on Doctor Who, but older viewers will recall her starring role in the legendary hospital drama E.R. That said, I can't help thinking she only got the Strictly call because Hannah Waddingham must have said no. Predicted finish: 9th Chris Robshaw Chris Robshaw's a handsome lad and a former rugby player. The Strictly viewers tend to like handsome lads and rugby players. Logic dictates, therefore, that Robshaw won't be going home before Halloween. Predicted finish: 10th Thomas Skinner The BBC booking JD Vance's new best mate has already raised a few eyebrows in political quarters. Thomas Skinner was good value on The Apprentice in 2019, and if the Strictly viewers take a liking to his "honest to goodness working class boy" persona, he could surprise a few people. I have three pieces of advice for him. One, stay off social media. Two, ditch the MAGA caps. Three, don't say "Bosh" in the studio. Predicted finish: 11th La Voix Surely the BBC is scraping the barrel by giving a slot to La Voix, whose biggest claim to fame to date was failing on Britain's Got Talent? There will also doubtless be a few grumbles about the Beeb having a drag act on a family show, but I don't think it's that big a deal. Craig Revel Horwood's appeared in drag loads of times. Standing 6ft in heels, La Voix's main stumbling block could be finding a partner to pair up with. Predicted finish: 12th Ross King When I heard Lorraine Kelly's veteran Hollywood reporter Ross King had got the call, two thoughts crossed my mind. Either an office junior misheard their boss when they told them to book Ross Kemp, or the production accountant wanted to save a few quid on the fake tan budget. King is a lively fella to have around the place, but I suspect he'll be there for a fun time rather than a long time. Predicted finish: 13th Kristian Nairn When the BBC announced Hodor from Game of Thrones as this year's final contestant, all hope that they might be saving the best till last went out of the window. It was less "Hold the door", more "Shut the front door!" Who knows, perhaps his DJing background means he's got some rhythm buried within that 6ft 10in frame? At least his time with the dragons and bloodthirsty tyrants on GoT will stand him in good stead for when he meets the Strictly judges. Predicted finish: 14th Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Strictly loves an ex-footballer, so it's not too surprising to see one on the list. The problem is I haven't seen anything to suggest Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will provide the sort of comedy Tony Adams and Paul Merson brought to the ballroom. Unless he's been hiding some nifty dancing feet in his shooting boots, he must be favourite for an early bath. Predicted finish: 15th The Strictly Come Dancing 2025 lineup in full
