BJP steps up its Waqf Act outreach campaign in U.P.
: The Bharatiya Janata Party is pushing its pro-Waqf Amendment Act 2025 campaign forward in Uttar Pradesh, holding statewide outreach programme to convince the minorities that the legislation is the need of the hour and not against the interests of the Muslims. Union minister for parliamentary affairs and minority affairs Kiren Rijiju is expected to participate in one such programme in Lucknow on May 9.
The BJP has been running the Waqf Sudhar Janjagran Abhiyan from April 20 in the state with the help of its frontal organisations like the Minority Morcha, Mahila Morcha and the Yuva Morcha.
Besides ministers in the BJP government, party office bearers, MPs and MLAs have been tasked with reaching out to the youngsters, women and other members of the minority community to make them understand the benefits and the need of the Waqf Amendment Act.
Disclosing more details about the campaign, UP chief of the BJP Minority Morcha Kunwar Basit Ali said, 'Workshops for the Waqf Amendment Act have been held across districts in the state so far. We are also running Waqf Sudhar Janjagran Abhiyan in districts where one minister and one member of the minority community is going among the people. This has been held in more than 30 districts so far. The rest will also be covered soon.'
'Soon, we will start our programmes district-wise. It will be called Alpsankhyak Prabuddh Samvad, in which the responsibility for calling people will be with the local MLA. In parliamentary constituencies, it will be done by the MPs. In constituencies, where our candidate couldn't win, the responsibility will be given to the MP or MLA candidate who had contested,' Basit Ali added.
'This time, the BJP Mahila Morcha is also entrusted with the responsibility of holding these Janjagran programmes and get at least 100 women from the minority community to the programme. In every assembly constituency, the Mahila Morcha has been given a target to reach out to at least 500 people. Similarly, the BJP Yuva Morcha will contact youth from the minority community and educate them about the details and benefits of the Waqf Amendment Act. Posters, pamphlets and booklets have also been issued by the party which will be distributed in these outreach programmes.'
The pamphlets and booklets explain what the Waqf Amendment Act is and mention its key points.
The booklets have pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior BJP leaders. They highlight how a CWC report in 2018 indicated that Waqf has eight lakh acres of land with an approximate value of ₹10 lakh crore. The booklet also talks about how Waqf has 'looted' the Muslim community. It also mentions an alleged land scam in Karnataka Waqf Board by Congress leaders and carries a picture of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Kunwar Basit Ali also said the BJP members will reach out to social media influencers, prominent people of the minority community, doctors, madrasa administrators and engineers.
'Along with this, central ministers will also participate in these outreach programmes. On May 9, 2025, Union minister for parliamentary affairs and minority affairs Kiren Rijiju will participate in this outreach programme and will meet members of the minority community, which can be even Jain, Parsi, Sikh or Christian community (members). He will also hold a meeting with the Muslims community representatives and address a press conference in this regard,' added Basit Ali who was on his way to Bulandshahr for a similar programme.

Muslim Law Board Warns Of Contempt Petition Against Centre Over Waqf Portal
New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has taken exception to the Centre's move to activate the Waqf Umeed Portal from June 6. In a statement, the board alleged that the government's move is illegal and amounts to contempt of court since the law backing it - the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025 - has been challenged before the Supreme Court. The statement also appealed to Muslims and State Waqf Boards not to use the portal until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict. The Muslim Law Board also said it would approach the Supreme Court against the government move by filing a contempt of court petition. According to the law board, all Muslim organizations have opposed the law, and it has also drawn criticism from Opposition parties, human rights groups and minority communities including Sikh and Christian bodies. The law board also alleged that though the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, the government has proceeded to launch the portal and made registration of Waqf properties mandatory through it. The law board has contended that such a move constitutes contempt of court as the very basis of the portal - the validity of the amended Waqf law - is sub judice. The Supreme Court has heard a clutch of petitions challenging Waqf Amendment Act of 2025. Last month, the court had reserved its order on the question of interim stay on certain provisions of the UMEED Act of 2025 till it takes a call on the legality of the new law.

Police station in-charge's vehicle stolen in Tripura's Bishalgarh, triggers row
Unidentified people stole a vehicle belonging to the Bishalgarh women police station in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday evening, right in front of a crowd of onlookers, prompting criticism from the CPM that the ruling BJP's 'tactics of using anti-social elements to suppress the Opposition voices' had got out of hand. The Mahindra Bolero, belonging to the police station in-charge, was learnt to have been parked near an old fuel station in the area when it was stolen. Eyewitnesses said two people reached the area riding a scooter, quickly snatched the keys of the Bolero, shoved the driver out and fled with the parked vehicle. Two more people arrived in a van. A local shopkeeper described the sequence of events and said the entire act happened so swiftly that by the time the police arrived—about five minutes later—the men had vanished. A woman, who was also a witness to the theft, shared her dismay and shock at such a daredevil crime in public. Hours later, two people were stabbed and robbed of Rs 11.5 lakh in the Rastarmatha area under the Bishalgarh rural development block on Tuesday. Sagar Miah, a resident of Matinagar in the area, said he and his father Harej Miah were on their way back home with the money they sold a plot of land for when a gang of three people attacked them with knives, injured him and his father badly, and fled with the money. Incidents of robbery, snatching, theft, petty crimes, stabbing etc have been on the rise in parts of Bishalgarh recently. On Tuesday, Inspector General (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak visited the area where the police vehicle was stolen. 'We are trying to track the criminals. In the incident of robbery, the victim is hospitalised. We are trying to verify all sources. Once all information is available, an FIR will be registered and culprits will be identified. On the theft of the police vehicle, we have started naka checking everywhere. When the culprits are caught, we can say for certain who were behind this,' he said. Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma told reporters that the police were also looking at the source of the money claimed to have been stolen. 'Usually, people don't keep such huge amounts of cash. They have given some clarification on how they got the money from cattle sale, paddy sale and money sent by a relative staying in Qatar, but the amount of money still doesn't add up,' Debbarma said, adding that Sagar Miah's claim that he might go abroad if he gets necessary permissions and that he needed the money for that purpose was also not entirely convincing, either. Meanwhile, CPM Bishalgarh subdivisional secretary Partha Pratim Majumder said the proverbial genie had got out of the bottle now, blaming the rise in such crimes on the BJP's alleged use of anti-social elements against Opposition parties. BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya termed the allegations 'baseless'. They (CPM) don't have anything to say. They try to concoct stories. We don't have anything to do with anti-socials. History stands testimony to the fact that the CPM does politics with the support of anti-socials. Communists have sympathised with Naxals recently and members of that party fraternise with anti-socials at the local level. The police will act freely (in Tripura),' he said. IG Ipper Manchak said the pattern of crimes was changing as urbanisation and prosperity increased in the state. 'Earlier cattle thefts used to occur. That pattern is no longer the same. Police are working on this new pattern. Police will have to change tactics. If there is any individual or criminal organisation behind it, we have to go deeper. This is nothing out of control. Thirty per cent of property crimes have come down since last year. Cybercrime is one of our main priorities now. That is many times higher than this. All incidents will be followed by detection and punishment,' he said. Despite the crimes reported in close succession to each other in Bishalgarh, the official defended the overall law and order situation. 'Crime is coming down across the state including in Bishalgarh. Especially property-related crimes and NDPS cases are under control,' he said.
