BYD Sime Motors partners with Transport Ministry

The Sun29-04-2025

IN a concerted effort to bolster electric vehicle (EV) adoption and support Malaysia's transition to low-carbon mobility, BYD Sime Motors has entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Transport (MOT). This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to reducing carbon emissions through the wider use of EVs in both public and private sectors.
The 'Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT' initiative is a six-month programme designed to offer Ministry personnel an immersive EV driving experience. Backed by Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd—a subsidiary of Gentari Sdn Bhd—two EV chargers have been installed at the MOT headquarters in Putrajaya to support the campaign.
At the official launch ceremony held at the Ministry's complex, the partnership was inaugurated by Transport Minister YB Loke Siew Fook and Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Sime Motors. They were joined by Deputy Transport Minister YB Datuk Haji Hasbi Bin Habibollah, MOT Secretary General YBhg. Dato' Jana Santhiran Muniayan, General Manager of BYD Sime Motors Adeline Lew, and Izuan Hafiz, Head of Green Mobility MY-SG at Gentari.
Through this initiative, BYD Sime Motors is providing the Ministry with its entire lineup of EVs–including the BYD Sealion 7, BYD Seal, BYD Atto 3 Ultra, BYD M6, and BYD Dolphin–on a temporary loan basis. The test drive programme gives MOT staff hands-on experience with these electric models, allowing them to better understand their technological advancements, performance capabilities, and day-to-day practicality.
Jeffrey Gan expressed confidence that the initiative would spur a deeper appreciation for electric mobility within government ranks. He affirmed that BYD Sime Motors is proud to lead the charge alongside the Ministry of Transport in advancing the national low-carbon agenda. The experience, he noted, is designed to inspire greater EV uptake not just among the public but also within government vehicle fleets.
The collaboration represents more than a showcase of EV models–it signals a broader step towards embedding sustainable transport practices within public sector operations. By encouraging firsthand interaction with EVs, the programme aims to inform policy decisions and promote institutional readiness for the adoption of clean mobility solutions.
In support of this push, two 22kW AC chargers have been installed at the Ministry, reinforcing the role of public-private partnerships in developing Malaysia's EV infrastructure. Gentari, which currently operates over 530 charging points nationwide, plays a central role in achieving the government's ambitious target of 10,000 public chargers by 2025 as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
This collaboration between BYD Sime Motors, the Ministry of Transport, and Gentari sets a precedent for future efforts to integrate electric vehicles into Malaysia's transport ecosystem. As the country intensifies its sustainability efforts, initiatives like Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT pave the way for a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.

Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Media to get ‘first-hand look' at new KLIA Aerotrain next week

The Aerotrain was suspended in March 2023 after a breakdown for maintenance and upgrading works. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The press will be given a tour of KLIA's new and improved Aerotrain service next week, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. Loke said he will give an update on the service, which has been suspended since March 2023, and give the media a tour before it begins operations, Bernama reported. 'We will invite (the media) to KLIA next week to take a first-hand look,' Loke was quoted as saying. The Aerotrain was suspended in March 2023 after a breakdown for maintenance and upgrading works. After some delays, it was expected to resume operations in the second quarter of this year. The service, which has operated for 25 years, has been a backbone of KLIA's internal transport network since 1998. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director Izani Ghani previously said several technical aspects needed to be resolved before the Aerotrain resumed operations to ensure that it runs smoothly and complies with safety requirements.

Malaysia to enforce VEP for Singapore vehicles from July 1

The VEP announcement comes eight years after the plan was first proposed in 2017, with implementation delayed twice in 2019 and 2020. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : Starting July 1, Malaysia will enforce the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for Singapore-registered vehicles crossing land borders to improve road safety. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said that vehicles without a valid VEP would be issued a RM300 compound fine, which must be paid before they are allowed to leave Malaysia. 'We're enforcing this from July 1 because ample time has already been given. As we've said before, we started with a soft advocacy approach on Oct 1, 2024,' he told a press conference at his ministry today. The VEP scheme was first proposed eight years ago in 2017. It was postponed twice – once in 2019 and again in 2020 – before being revived last year. A similar VEP system is being planned for foreign-registered vehicles entering from southern Thailand. Loke said that those who have pre-registered but yet to complete the VEP process will also be fined and required to settle the fine before leaving the country. 'There's another category – company-owned private vehicles. If these do not have a valid VEP and no registration was ever made, the driver of the company vehicle will be fined. 'However, if the vehicle has been pre-registered, we will issue a reminder notice instead of a fine. For this category, we are offering a bit more leeway because the process involves submitting various company documents,' he said. Loke added that enforcement operations would be carried out outside the border checkpoints to prevent congestion. Fines must be paid via cashless methods at road transport department (JPJ) counters, JPJ Mobile units, or online through MyEG. During the soft enforcement phase, authorities randomly checked 52,012 Singapore-registered vehicles and issued 2,245 reminder notices (4.32%) to those without VEPs. As of June 2, a total of 231,018 RFID tags had been issued for individual private vehicles, and 2,660 for company-owned private vehicles.
