Sarpanch killed by Maoists 2 decades ago, his family is first to get home under new Chhattisgarh scheme
According to the government, hundreds of surrendered Maoists and victims of Maoist violence will be beneficiaries of the scheme. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said, 'The Centre has sanctioned 15,000 houses for such beneficiaries in Chhattisgarh.'
Masa Sodi's wife, Sodi Hungi (48), is a resident of Oiras village, located over 20 km from Sukma district headquarters. Hungi has two sons and three daughters.
The family has received Rs 95,000 in two instalments under the scheme and is set to get another instalment to make the total amount Rs 1.35 lakh. They also spent some of their own money to build their four-room house.
After Masa Sodi's death, Hungi sold liquor and worked as a domestic help to raise their five children, said one of the sons, Rama Sodi (27). While the three daughters did not go to school, the two sons lived and studied in neighbouring Dantewada district.
'My mom did a lot of work and suffered a lot. We have seen many terrible days — I cannot express in words. I do not know why my father was killed… I was in class 1. We never found out which Maoists killed him. For all we know, those Maoists are already dead. For the past several years, Maoists have stopped coming to our village. I dropped out of college after HSC and we are farmers,' Rama said.
Until recently, the family had a kutcha house, but last month the construction of their new house was completed and they have since moved in.

Work to resume on Pragati Maidan underpass in Delhi after Centre's nod
Commuters travelling on the Ring Road stretch near Bhairon Marg, Sarai Kale Khan, and ITO will have a smooth ride by the end of this year, as the Delhi Government has received the go-ahead from the Centre to complete construction of Underpass No 5, officials said Monday. Construction work at the underpass, which is a part of the Pragati Maidan transit corridor, stopped in 2023 after the precast concrete boxes, pushed beneath an active railway line using the box-pushing method, sank due to flooding caused by the Yamuna River flowing nearby. The Public Works Department (PWD) then proposed a new plan, and sent it to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) seeking approval. 'This is not just a clearance. It is a green signal to speed, transparency, and accountability. Every rupee spent on infrastructure must yield public value, and I am glad that this solution safeguards both engineering integrity and financial responsibility. I thank MoHUA for their support. Now, execution is our top priority, and delay is not an option,' Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said. According to officials, PWD will take steps like carrying out immediate grouting under the box structures to stabilise the soil and prevent further settlement. The other steps it will follow are urgent stitching of boxes beneath the railway embankment, enabling track strengthening and ensuring structural safety. 'The adoption of the cast-in-situ construction method with revised width and height parameters, identified as the most technically viable solution in the current scenario,' said an official. Underpass 5 is a vital component of Delhi's strategic transit upgrade, aimed at easing congestion in and around Pragati Maidan, ITO, and nearby arterial roads. Once operational, it will ensure seamless vehicular movement, especially during major conventions and public events at the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) complex. PWD has been directed to immediately initiate the approved works and submit weekly progress reports to Singh's office. The project is now being positioned as a model of high-impact infrastructure delivered with fiscal discipline and administrative resolve.

The Minister said that various welfare schemes are being implemented under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. As part of this, from August 15, women in the State will be provided with free bus travel. He also emphasised that under 'Thalliki Vandhanam' scheme, financial assistance is being extended for the education of each child in a family. Speaking at a special event organised by women trainees marking nearing the completion of 100 days of training, Minister Bharath praised the success of tailoring programmes, citing a local family earning up to Rs 5 lakh per month through tailoring. He noted that women's apparel commands high market value and encouraged women to work hard with determination, highlighting that they could surpass their spouses or children in earnings. He also announced plans to offer doll-making skill training and facilitate tie-ups with companies to ensure trainees are gainfully employed. BC Corporation Executive Director Zakir Hussain informed that the government is currently offering basic tailoring training to 3,440 women from BC and EBC communities in the district. Those who maintain at least 75% attendance will receive a free tailor-model sewing machine. Top-performing women will also be given opportunities to pursue advanced courses in fashion designing. SC slams UP govt's hurry in ordinance
New Delhi: Ina setback to the Uttar Pradesh government, the Supreme Court on Monday said it would keep in abeyance its May 15 nod to the ambitious scheme to develop the Shri Banke Bihari Temple Corridor at Vrindavan in Mathura for the benefit of devotees as main stakeholders were not heard. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi deprecated the approach of the state government in moving the court in 'clandestine manner' and questioned the hurry for enacting an ordinance Uttar Pradesh Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025 to take over the management of the ancient temple. The top court said it would appoint a committee headed by a retired high court or district judge to manage the affairs of the temple in the interest of lakhs of devotees besides including the main stakeholders in the managing committee. The bench told Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, 'Less said the better. How do you justify the directions passed by the court? The state in the most unfortunate way came to the court in the most clandestine manner without informing the court receiver or stakeholders (members of the family who claimed to be the owner of the temple). Get the directions behind their back and set aside the order of the high court. This is the least thing we expect from the state.' The top court at present is not adjudicating the constitutionality of the ordinance and the high court will look into it. The bench asked Nataraj to seek instructions while deciding to pass an order on August 5 to keep the May 15 order in abeyance and appoint someone as the managing trustee of the temple to look after the daily affairs. 'This is the land of lord Krishna. He was the first mediator known to the world. Let's find a way out to resolve the dispute pending for years and develop the area in the interest of lakhs of devotees who visit these iconic religious places. Basic amenities need to be created as nowadays religious tourism is one of the biggest sources of revenue,' the bench said. It assured all the stakeholders, including several warring factions, who claim to be owners of the temple that some responsible person would be given charge to manage the affairs of the temple aside from a mandate to develop the adjoining areas and small temples in nearby localities.
