'Narender surrendered to Adani, China': Congress ups ante with fresh jibe at PM
The Congress on Thursday (June 5, 2025) upped the ante with its "Narender-surrender" jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he "surrendered" before billionaire Gautam Adani as well as to China.
There was no immediate response from the government or the Adani Group over the Congress's accusations, but the business conglomerate has, in the past, rejected all such allegations against it.
Congress leader Ajoy Kumar said the duo of Mr. Adani and Mr. Modi has left behind the Jai-Veeru duo from the film "Sholay".
"The process of Narendra Modi's surrender before (U.S. President Donald) Trump has happened after many years of practice," Mr. Kumar said at a press conference at the Indira Bhawan, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi.
"Wherever Narendra Modi goes or whatever Adani wants — he gets the contract.... The diplomatic moves of India's prime minister have helped industrialist Mr A to expand his international business interests in ports, airports, electricity, coal mining and weapons," the Congress leader claimed and cited examples from various countries.
"Narenderji has hurt his country's relations with her neighbours as well as with other countries by brazenly promoting Mr A's ambitions. The growth of the Mr A Group outside India over the past decade or so has been closely aligned with the diplomatic efforts of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he alleged.
Many of "Mr A's" international deals were struck soon after Mr. Modi's official visits to certain countries or after heads of government visited India, Mr. Kumar claimed.
Alleging that Mr. Modi had also "surrendered" before China, he said "Narender-Surrender" must apologise to the country for his "clean chit" to the neighbouring country on its invasion of Indian territory in 2020.
Mr. Kumar claimed that China has vowed to stand by Pakistan in defending its "sovereignty" and "territorial integrity", and called it its "iron-clad friend".
"China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, recently gave a statement that his country would continue to stand by Pakistan in upholding its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national independence. China has supplied arms worth over $20 billion to Pakistan," Mr. Kumar claimed.
The Congress had said on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) that it is wrong to think that "Narendra Modi is India and India is Narendra Modi", as it slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its criticism of Rahul Gandhi over his dig at the Prime Minister, and doubled down on the "Narender-surrender" jibe.
Mr. Gandhi had said in Bhopal on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) that "as soon as Trump signalled from there, picked up the phone and said, 'what are you doing Modiji? Narender, surrender'.... And Modiji obeyed Trump's orders with Ji Huzoor'".
Urging people to remember 1971, Mr. Gandhi said that back then, a phone call had not been made, but the United States had sent its 7th Fleet, weapons, and an aircraft carrier. However, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not surrender and stated that she would act in the national interest.
Referring to the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mr. Gandhi said they are habituated to writing "surrender letters" since Independence.
The BJP has accused Mr. Gandhi of insulting the armed forces with his "surrender" barb at Mr. Modi, saying it amounted to undermining the success of Operation Sindoor.
BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress leader has surpassed even Pakistan's army chief, prime minister and the terror masterminds based there in speaking in support of the neighbouring country, and alleged that his jibes reflect a sick and dangerous mindset.

India slaps anti-dumping duties on key chemical imports from China, EU, Japan, and Switzerland
New Delhi: The government has imposed anti-dumping duties on imports of Vitamin-A Palmitate and Insoluble Sulphur from China, Japan, Switzerland and the European Union (EU), aiming to shield domestic manufacturers from low-priced imports that regulators say are hurting local industry. According to a finance ministry notification issued late on Friday, the five-year duties follow investigations by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), which found that both substances were being exported to India at unfairly low prices, below cost or fair market value, and were undercutting Indian producers. These products are critical inputs for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics and tyre manufacturing. For Vitamin-A Palmitate—used in fortified foods, nutraceuticals and pharma formulations—the DGTR found 'material injury' to domestic producers due to large-scale dumping from China, the EU and Switzerland. The compound, widely used in small dosages, continues to be largely import-dependent in India. Effective immediately, duties will range from $0.87 to $20.87 per kg. The highest duty has been imposed on Chinese exporters other than Shangyu NHU BioChem Co. Ltd., which will face a lower rate of $14.95/kg. Swiss producer DSM Nutritional Products Ltd will attract a duty of $0.87/kg, while other Swiss exporters will face $8.2/kg. A flat rate of $11.09/kg will apply to imports from the EU. Vitamin-A Palmitate in the strength of 1.6 MIU/Gm, used for animal feed, has been excluded from the levy. India imported $48.6 million worth of Vitamin-A Palmitate in FY25, with the bulk of the shipments coming from China and Europe, according to commerce ministry data. While the move comes as a relief for domestic Vitamin-A makers, industry players flagged India's broader dependence on imports for this compound, which is crucial for nutritional and pharmaceutical applications. 'While the anti-dumping duty provides protection to domestic manufacturers of the compound, it could raise input costs for drug makers in the short term, especially those relying on imports from Switzerland and China,' said Yogendra Sharma, a drug manufacturer. 'However, the price impact is expected to be manageable given that Vitamin-A is used in small dosages and accounts for a minor fraction of total formulation cost.' 'With global supply chains realigning, India is now far more proactive in using WTO-compliant instruments to protect its domestic industry. The Vitamin-A Palmitate case is another example of this assertiveness,' said Manish Kr Shubhay, a multidisciplinary dispute resolution expert and Partner at The Percept Law Offices. The anti-dumping duties are payable in Indian currency, based on the exchange rate notified by the Revenue Department on the date of filing the bill of entry. In a related notification, the government also slapped five-year anti-dumping duties on imports of Insoluble Sulphur from China and Japan, used primarily by tyre manufacturers to improve rubber vulcanization. DGTR's investigation found that exporters from both countries were dumping the product at depressed prices, adversely affecting profitability and pricing power of Indian producers. Depending on the exporter, the duties range from $259 to $358 per metric tonne. Chinese imports will face a flat $307/MT levy. Among Japanese exporters, Shikoku Chemicals will be charged $259/MT, while all others will attract the highest rate of $358/MT.

The extreme poverty rate in the country has been recorded to have come down from 27.1 percent in 2011-12 to 5.3 percent in 2022-23. A total of 344.47 million people were living in extreme poverty in India during 2011-12, which has come down to about 75.24 million people during 2022-23. According to the World Bank data, as a significant progress in India, 269 million individuals were lifted out of extreme poverty in about 11 years. 65 percent of India's extremely poor people lived in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh during 2011-12. At the same time, these states contributed to two-thirds of the total decline in extreme poverty by 2022-23. The latest World Bank data shows that in absolute terms, the number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 344.47 million to just 75.24 million. The World Bank's assessment is based on the international poverty line of $3.00 per day (using 2021 prices), which shows widespread deprivation in both rural and urban areas. According to World Bank estimates, the share of Indians living in extreme poverty at $2.15 per day (the previous poverty line based on 2017 prices) is 2.3 percent, down sharply from 16.2 percent recorded in 2011-12. According to the latest data, the number of people living below the poverty line of $2.15 per day is recorded at 33.66 million in 2022 from 205.93 million in 2011. The data also revealed that this sharp decline was observed uniformly, with rural extreme poverty declining from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent and urban extreme poverty declining from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent in the last 11 years. Moreover, India has also made tremendous progress in reducing multidimensional poverty. According to the data, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) declined from 53.8 per cent in 2005-06 to 16.4 per cent by 2019-21 and further declined to 15.5 per cent in 2022-23.
