Port Huron dealership burglarized; Police search for trio of suspects
PORT HURON, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) — There was a mad dash for the keys as thieves were on the hunt at a Port Huron dealership, and it almost cost the business a $60,000 car.
For decades, the Cawood Honda dealership had never been broken into until Monday night.
"We had one car key that was out, that was actually in our service department, that they were going to bring in for a safety inspection in the morning," said Ted Barrett, owner of Cawood Honda. "They [the thieves] found a place where they could climb under the gate at the fence, my guess is they climbed back out and got picked up."
The trio scoured the business for nearly 15 minutes, causing damage. Video showed the suspects crouching down to make a getaway. Sadly, their movement didn't trigger the motion sensors.
"We found out the next morning when they opened the dealership at 6 a.m., and the doors to the office were kicked in," Barrett told CBS News Detroit.
Ultimately, the thieves made off with the keys to a high-powered Dodge Charger. The dealership's owner believes the group would have come back to retrieve it.
"They didn't actually enter the building where the Skat Pack was. Another one of our protocols is we figure we aren't going to leave the keys in the same building as the car," Barrett said.
The team wore face masks but one ended up removing theirs to smoke a vape pen. While police investigate, Barrett hopes, that slip-up leads to an arrest. The Dodge Charger is no longer on the property. Now it'll be sold at an auction wholesale.
"Typically what they'll do is just get two keys re-programmed so that the other key wouldn't work," Barrett said.
According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, vehicle thefts statewide have increased. Over 28,000 were reported in 2023 alone.
"This is very unusual for our area. Obviously, we're disappointed it happened," Barrett said.
The dealership has since beefed up security. All the while no one was hurt nor cars damaged.

Odessa man arrested after road rage incident
ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- An Odessa man was arrested earlier this week after investigators said he allegedly pointed a gun at a mother and her two young children during a road rage incident. Dominic Ashton Chavez has been charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. According to an Odessa Police Department report, on June 3, officers were called to the area of 42nd Street and Grandview after a woman called 911 and said the driver of an orange vehicle had pointed two handguns at her as they were driving southbound on Grandview. In the 1000 block of N Grandview, investigators found an orange Dodge Charger fitting the description and initiated a high-risk traffic stop. During questioning, investigators said the driver, identified as Chavez, reportedly admitted that he was armed with two handguns and that he'd pointed his guns at a woman in another vehicle after she revved her engine. Chavez said a verbal disturbance took place during the incident as well. Chavez was arrested and booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center without incident. Eleven injured in Lacey after driver flees from police allegedly crashes into four cars
A 19-year-old driver was arrested for vehicular assault in Lacey following a police chase and crash on Saturday, the Lacey Police Department (LPD) said in a release. At around 3:18 p.m., A Lacey officer tried to pull over a man in a 2014 Dodge Charger allegedly driving recklessly on College Street Southeast, LPD said. Police say the driver allegedly sped away from the officer near 14th Avenue Southeast and Ruddell Road Southeast and hit four cars which injured eleven people and sent five to the hospital. The Charger caught fire after the crash and everyone inside was able to get out on their own, the release said. Authorities closed the road for three and a half hours and the 19-year-old driver from Tacoma will be booked in the Thurston County Jail, according to LPD.

Davenport driver arrested after police find wrecked car, cocaine and cash: Court records
A 50-year-old Davenport man was in custody Saturday after Davenport Police say he drove the wrong way on a one-way and wrecked his car, according to Scott County arrest affidavits. Diondre Wakefield faces felony charges of controlled-substance violation and failure to affix a drug stamp, along with a serious misdemeanor charge of eluding, according to Scott County Court documents. About 11:53 p.m. Friday, Davenport Police saw Wakefield driving a white Dodge Charger in the area of the 400 block of Gaines Street, affidavits show. Officers knew Wakefield had several warrants for his arrest including local from Davenport Police and interstate from Rock Island County, according to affidavits. Police identified Wakefield as the driver. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a stop, but Wakefield 'immediately turned the wrong way on a one-way road and willfully failed to stop, fleeing at a high rate of speed,' police say in affidavits. Police relocated the Charger shortly afterward. The car had wrecked in the 800 block of Marquette Street and it was unoccupied. A K9 was on the scene and tracked southeast from the car. Officers gave Wakefield commands to surrender, but he remained hidden and refused to comply, affidavits say. During the track, police found a clear plastic bag containing 13.1 grams of cocaine discarded in a back yard, along with $42 cash. There was no tax stamp affixed to this, according to affidavits. The track continued south. Police found Wakefield about two houses south of where the narcotics and money were located. He had $755 cash. 'The large amount of the suspected crack cocaine along with the large amount of cash indicate (Wakefield) to be selling the crack cocaine,' police say in arrest affidavits.
