Thomas Davis Jr. remains a solid commitment to Notre Dame
Thomas Davis Jr.'s commitment to Notre Dame remains solid.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound North Carolina outside linebacker returned to South Bend this past weekend for an official visit and was among a slew of top recruits as the Fighting Irish had arguably their biggest recruiting weekend of this offseason.
The Class of 2026 Weddington (Matthews, NC) product will obviously always be linked to Georgia, his father's alma mater after he took an official visit to Athens earlier this month. But he made sure to recruit the uncommitted players that were in South Bend over the weekend, including having in-depth conversations with wide receivers Devin Fitzgerald and Kaydon Finley. Like Davis Jr., both have fathers who had NFL careers.
That's a great sign for Marcus Freeman and his staff.
Davis Jr. committed to ND three days after he visited the Irish during their 52-3 win over Florida State last fall.

No. 6 Notre Dame names CJ Carr starting quarterback over Kenny Minchey
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback Tuesday, ending the preseason competition with Kenny Minchey. The announcement was made on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season's run to the national championship game but has not thrown a college pass. He played in the second half of a historic 66-7 rout at Purdue last season. He was a three-time all-state quarterback in Michigan and is the son of former Michigan football player Jason Carr and the grandson of former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr. Minchey appeared in three games with the Irish in 2023 and completed both of his attempts for 12 yards. He also appeared in last year's Purdue game, completing his only pass of the season for 4 yards and rushing two times for 12 yards. He scored his first TD on a 7-yard run. Steve Angeli, Riley Leonard's top backup last season, also was in the battle during the spring. He replaced Leonard in the title game late in the first half against Penn State in the national semifinal and led the Irish to a score that helped them get back in sync. But he transferred to Syracuse after spring ball, turning the expected three-man battle into a two-man competition. Angeli was named Syracuse's starter earlier this week. Notre Dame opens the season in primetime Aug. 31 at No. 10 Miami. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and The Associated Press

CJ Carr named starting quarterback for No. 6 Notre Dame over Kenny Minchey: ‘Their strengths are very similar'
CJ Carr will be Notre Dame's starting quarterback when the No. 6 Irish open the season at No. 10 Miami on Aug. 31. Notre Dame, last season's College Football Playoff runner-up, made the announcement Tuesday morning via its football social media pages on X and Instagram. Carr replaces Riley Leonard, who was a sixth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the spring. Carr, in his second year with the Irish, hasn't yet thrown a pass in a collegiate game. The four-star recruit out of Saline, Mich., is the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. He was in competition during fall camp with Kenny Minchey, a third-year Notre Dame player who completed 3 of 3 passes for 16 yards and rushed for 12 yards and a touchdown in four games. The pair split reps with the first team throughout camp. 'Their strengths are very similar,' Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli told reporters at the beginning of camp. 'Both guys are really good in terms of their routine and their preparation. Both have really high football IQs. It means a lot to both of them. Both have a lot of arm talent. 'CJ is probably a little bit more vocal than Kenny is. Kenny is probably a little more athletic than CJ is. But all in all, we've got two really good quarterbacks that are competing their butts off.' Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said earlier this week that they saw positives from both quarterbacks during camp, with Denbrock declaring them 'both good enough to help us win football games.' Freeman said he thought both QBs worked hard, were coachable and were able to move on quickly from mistakes. He wasn't ready to name a starter Sunday morning when he met with reporters, but had laid out the criteria for the winner, including demonstrating consistency and sound decision-making. 'I don't want to just sit here and watch the outcome, good or bad, and blame the quarterback,' Freeman said. 'It's like, 'What decision was he supposed to make? Did he make the right decision?' Then you look and say, 'OK, was the ball good? Was the protection right?' All those different things that are on his plate. But that is more important to me than anything, the decision-making.' After winning the competition, Carr faces a big challenge in getting ready for the road opener against a ranked opponent. The Irish then host No. 19 Texas A&M in their second game on Sept. 13. Denbrock offered a word of caution to those observing. 'I hope everybody knows that no matter who we name the quarterback, it's no easy task going down to Miami and playing in a season opener,' Denbrock said. 'No matter who the starter is, there will be a learning curve involved in all of this. But we're confident we've got two guys who can compete at a very high level and do a really, really good job.'

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel
While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month.
