AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj challenges Delhi CM Rekha Gupta on liquor shop privatization
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) President Saurabh Bhardwaj on Sunday challenged Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to clarify her stance on the privatization of liquor shops under the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) upcoming excise policy.
The challenge came in response to Gupta's sharp criticism of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in Ludhiana, where she accused him of colluding with the 'builder mafia' and failing to curb spurious liquor deaths in Punjab.
Speaking to ANI, Bhardwaj said, 'I have a direct question for her (CM Rekha Gupta). BJP objected to the Delhi Excise Policy and claimed that liquor shops had been privatized. Later, the policy was scrapped, and the shops became government-owned again. Rekha Gupta should clarify if she will privatize liquor shops under the new Excise Policy. This will reveal who is in collusion with the liquor mafia. She should answer this.'
Earlier in the day, CM Gupta launched a scathing attack on Kejriwal during a public meeting in Ludhiana, Punjab, where she was campaigning for BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta in the Ludhiana West by-election scheduled for June 19.
AAP has fielded sitting Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate for the same seat.
Addressing a gathering, Gupta said, 'People are dying from spurious liquor, but what are you (Arvind Kejriwal) doing? You are grabbing the land of poor farmers in connivance with the builder mafia. The people of Delhi, who had given you so much support, got a little angry with you, and you came and sat in Punjab... Arvind Kejriwal has hollowed out the state government... Today, you have buried it under a debt of 4 lakh crores due to your wrong policies.'
Gupta also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Operation Sindoor's success and criticised Kejriwal's silence on the operation.
She stated, 'Every person in the country was happy with Operation Sindoor... None of the drones (of Pakistan) crossed the Punjab border, which happened under PM Narendra Modi's guidance. But you did not utter a word in its praise... There was not a single Punjabi or Sikh minister in 10 years of your tenure in the Delhi government. The entire Punjab government runs under the command of Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, Bibhav Kumar, and Raghav Chadha. What do they have to do with Punjab?'
Earlier, Gupta received a warm welcome from Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leaders at Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district. (ANI)

Ludhiana West constituency came into existence in 1977 and since then it has witnessed 10 assembly elections with Congress clinching the seat six times. The seat has a rich political legacy, having sent multiple ministers to the Punjab cabinet over the years. To begin with, Congress stalwart Harnam Das Johar won from here in 1980, 1985, 1992, and 2002, holding important portfolios such as Higher and School Education, Local Bodies, and Rehabilitation during his 2 terms i.e from 1992-1997 and 2002-2007. He has also remained Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha after winning from the seat. The Janata Party's A Vishwanathan won the first election in 1977, and AAP's Gurpreet Gogi made a breakthrough by winning the seat in 2022. The bypoll was necessitated owing to his untimely death in January 2025. The constituency has produced three cabinet ministers and one chief parliamentary secretary—making it one of the most politically significant urban seats in Punjab. Current political scenario After the SAD-BJP alliance ended in 2020, both parties began contesting elections separately. In the 2022 Assembly polls, BJP stood third in Ludhiana West with over 28,000 votes, while SAD received just around 10,000 votes. Notably, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP led in this segment, followed by Congress and AAP. When in alliance, SAD always contested from this seat. This time, the seat will see a quadrangular contest. Local issues Despite being home to key areas such as Model Town, Model Town Extension, Sarabha Nagar, Gurdev Nagar, and Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana West faces persistent civic challenges. Ravindra Vatsyayan, an Ayurveda scholar and a resident, said, 'Every time it rains, power goes out and water supply stops. Why can't we have power backup for tubewells or overhead water tanks like Chandigarh?' Aaditya Kumar rued the absence of good reading spaces. 'There are enough liquor shops, eating joints but not a single good public library,' he said. Cleanliness of Sidhwan Canal and the promotion of cycling to ease traffic congestion are also on the list of public demands.

PM to hold roadshow on June 20
Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in a Triranga Yatra and hold a roadshow before attending an event marking the first anniversary of the BJP's maiden government in Odisha on June 20. Though Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's government completed one year in office on June 12, the administration is holding a week-long celebration which will culminate on June 20 with the Prime Minister's address. Modi had last year attended the swearing in ceremony of the Majhi government in Odisha. 'The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive at the airport here at about 3 pm from Bihar. He will participate in a Triranga Yatra and lead a roadshow from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar,' Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik told reporters here. Official sources said as part of the celebrations, Modi will address a large gathering and highlight the achievements of Odisha's BJP government. He may also speak on the plans for the State's development, said a senior leader, who attended a preparatory meeting at the BJP headquarters on Friday. The meeting was attended by Majhi, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal, Deputy chief ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida and others.
