90s reality reboot cancelled after just one series as Channel 5 boss calls axe ‘a disaster'

The show had a huge following in the 90s – but the reboot flopped in the ratings AXING IT 90s reality reboot cancelled after just one series as Channel 5 boss calls axe 'a disaster' CHANNEL 5 has confirmed another major reboot has been axed from their line-up – calling the failure a 'disaster'. Ben Frow, 5's Chief Content Officer, announced two major cancellations today as part of Edinburgh's TV Festival. 5 Faking It saw members of the public try and fake being a pro in their trade Credit: Channel 5 5 The series failed to draw in viewers Credit: Channel 5 Advertisement 5 Participants were tested by having to convince a panel of judges Credit: Channel 5 Alongside Challenge Anneka – which was pulled from the schedule with one episode never airing – Frow confirmed that Faking It has also been culled. Speaking on the decision, he said: "I think it was a disaster [the show] didn't work, because it was brilliantly made." Faking It originally existed from Channel 4 from 2000 to 2006, and followed people trying to learn a brand new career path in the space of four weeks. Advertisement With the help of an expert in the field, the participant was then tested by competing with trained people in that skill at the end - with a panel having to figure out who was 'faking it' and who was legitimate. The series was rebooted by Channel 5 last year with three episodes, but it's now confirmed to not be renewed. Running from May to June, the three episodes saw a fish fryer learn to be a sushi chef, an estate agent become a market trader, and a painter-decorator learn to be a make-up artist. The series came under fire by unimpressed viewers, who labelled the show a "fix" after its first episode on air in 19 years. As part of the ruse, Rex had to adopt a northern accent and tackle gruelling 10-hour shifts, but managed to convince the market traders he had to fool. The show suffered flailing ratings and couldn't grab an audience enough to keep it on air. Channel 5 'to reboot' iconic reality series after nearly two decades off air The first episode failed to get into the Top 50 shows airing that week, according to ratings monitor BARB, with several episodes of The Chase and BBC News topping it. The announcement came alongside the axe of Challenge Anneka, the reboot of the 80s series starring Anneka Rice working on charitable projects by recruiting local companies. Chaser Darragh Ennis wants to bring back popular RTE quiz show

Darragh Ennis, star of the popular quiz show – The Chase, has said he would love to bring back a popular show that kept 90s kids entertained after school and ran for seven series. The show in question is Blackboard Jungle, and was hosted by Ray D'arcy on RTE 2 Television. It featured two teams of students from rival secondary schools pitted against one another Speaking to 'Off The Ball's' podcast on Newstalk, The Chaser said that while he didn't go on the programme himself, he has a couple of friends who did, and he would love to revisit it. Darragh Ennis. Pic: ITV 'I didn't (go on it). I have a couple of friends who did. I think we should revive that, and they should have me as host,' he stated. 'I think that would be brilliant. So RTE, listen to me. It would be brilliant. All you need is a minibus. 'I would absolutely love it to come back. I think it would be great. And I genuinely, all joking aside, I'd love to do something like that. I'd love to host it. I think it was a great show.' Shaun 'The Barrister' Wallace, Darragh 'The Menace' Ennis, Anne 'The Governess' Hegerty, Paul 'The Sinnerman' Sinha, Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan and Mark 'The Beast' Labbett. Pic: ITV Last January, Darragh revealed that he was taking a break from filming The Chase, after his father passed away from dementia in July 2024. Fans of the show would have noticed his absence, but he said he didn't realise how he was grieving the loss of his dad, but really he was 'broken inside.' The Chaser, nicknamed 'The Menace', spoke to Loose Women panellists Ruth Langsford, Judi Love, Sally Dynevor, and Kelle Bryan, on the popular chat show back in January and said 'On the Chase, there is a two-minute gap right at the end – the last thing we do is really, really high pressure, just by nature.' 'Normally when I start making mistakes, naturally I'd be able to handle it. I'd just plant my feet in my head psychologically and go, 'I made a mistake' and keep going.' Ennis said the impact of his father's death saw him become 'stressed and camera shy' while 'the pressure overwhelmed him completely'. After this, he said the show's producers offered him time off as well as counselling to deal with his loss.
