'A riot': Jane Austen stage adaptation with karaoke opens tonight
It's the 1800s and it's party time in Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of), the Olivier Award winning West End triumph opening in Southampton tonight (Tuesday June 10) as part of the city's Jane Austen 250 celebrations.
The unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen's most iconic love story will be at Mayflower Theatre until Saturday.
Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation featuring a string of pop classics including Young Hearts Run Free, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and You're So Vain.

Playwright Isobel Macarthur said: "I had a 50p copy of the novel from the second-hand bookshop below my flat in Glasgow. I assumed it would be completely unrelatable, but how wrong I was. The original book is a riot, a dynamic rom com, and Austen is a right laugh!
"This adaptation, which is told by the servants, using karaoke, is in the spirit of her. It's funny, feminist and front footed.
"A two-week run was originally planned back in 2018. So to be still doing it now is proof that audiences respond to generous entertainment and that all-female casts with regional accents don't detract from historical or literary pieces but, rather, enhance them."

Wright State alum takes home Tony Award for Best Actress-Musical
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A Wright State alum claimed one of theater's biggest prizes Sunday night. Nicole Scherzinger, who studied at WSU from 1996-99, took home the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical award at Sunday's ceremony for her starring role as Norma Desmond in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Sunset Boulevard.' The Tony is the latest in a string of honors for Scherzinger. She won an Olivier Award last year for the London production of the musical before it relocated to New York City's Broadway. In April 2025, she was named as one of Time Magazine's most influential people. 'If there's anyone out there who feels like they don't belong, or your time hasn't come, don't give up,' she said in her acceptance speech Sunday. Tom Felton to Reprise Role of Draco in ‘Harry Potter' on Broadway
Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, will reprise the role on Broadway. Felton will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway starting Nov. 11, for a 19-week engagement through March 22, 2026. The play is set 19 years after the end of the original Harry Potter series, and sees Draco as a father, alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione, who are all sending their children off to Hogwarts. He made his West End debut in 2022, playing the lead role of Sam in 2:22 A Ghost Story; in 2024, he starred as the lead, Bob Edwards, in Gareth Farr's play A Child of Science at Bristol Old Vic. 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world.
