Coronation Street legend's mum called him by his character's name

Metro2 days ago

Coronation Street legend Simon Gregson is used to being called Steve McDonald while out in public – but he didn't expect his own mother to do the same.
Simon has played Steve since 1989, so it is no wonder that fans address him as his character when they bump into him in real life.
He's been at the centre of some enormous storylines over the years, fathered four children and been married seven times.
'The thing is with a soap you're in people's front rooms every night of the week and they grow up with your character and they kind of grow up with you. So in their psyche, you're kind of in their lives,' Simon explained on the Fuelling Around podcast.
'The reaction to soap people is strange. I once had a woman grab hold of my arm down the aisle in the supermarket and she grabbed hold of me with a face of shock and horror and held onto me for ages and then apologised and walked off.'
'And I thought, 'She thinks I'm a dead relative.''
Even in his home, Simon can't escape Steve, as he confessed that his own mum even called him by his character's name once!
'I got called Steve by my mum once, at home. I mean, it was a genuine mistake. She went, 'I've been talking with Steve all day at work!' More Trending
'I was like, 'I know, but it's the last thing I need at home.'
'Bless my poor mum. It was genuine.'
Steve has been at the centre of some big stories this year, having fallen for Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney). However, things got complicated after she was exposed for poisoning Ken Barlow (William Roache).

EastEnders star slams BBC soap actors in savage 'haven't got a clue' swipe

Former EastEnders star Jamie Foreman, who played Derek Branning on the BBC show, has taken a swipe at his soap colleagues as he claimed they 'wouldn't last two minutes' outside of Albert Square Former EastEnders actor Jamie Foreman, who portrayed Derek Branning, launched a stinging critique of his ex-cast mates, claiming they "wouldn't last two minutes" in varied acting roles. He also shared how an older actress from the BBC's beloved drama agreed with his stern assessment. Jamie graced Albert Square from November 2011 until December 2012, where his character's scandalous affair with Kat Slater (played by Jessie Wallace), married to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), captivated audiences. Derek's tenure ended abruptly with a heart attack in the Christmas Day episode. ‌ Since then, the actor, now 67, has not shied away from expressing his thoughts about fellow performers from the show. ‌ During an appearance on The Lewis Nicholls Show, he said: "The discipline on the set is just... it is just... I was sitting with an older actress on there who is unfortunately not with us any more. "We are sitting on the set and she lent over to me and she went 'haven't got a f***ing clue have they?' And we are watching all these young (actors) thinking they are the bee's knees, you know." Jamie continued his pointed remarks noting: "And the discipline, and directors are going (clears throat) and I am sitting there... would not last two minutes outside of here and invariably none of them do." With a laugh, he wrapped up his musings: "They always end up having to go back so I think I gave a very bad clue there didn't I? I think I have just grassed myself right up on that one." Jamie, who has graced our screens in Double Decker Driving School and Birds of a Feather, opened up further about his stint on EastEnders, describing it as "just another job" and "far from a highlight" of his acting career. ‌ He revealed that he had been approached "many times" to join the soap but only agreed when they consented to a one-year term. However, Jamie, whose film credits include Rise of the Footsoldier and Oliver Twist, expressed disappointment with the soap's management, alleging that they "made promises they never kept". ‌ The actor shared the gruelling schedule of once filming up to 36 scenes a day, which "burnt him out", despite assurances that he wouldn't have to work Saturdays, stating: "I did every Saturday. I was the first in, last out every day." Despite his experiences, he recognised the significance of EastEnders for its audience, acknowledging its "iconic" status and the respect it commands, particularly for the BBC. Following the release of the podcast on YouTube, viewers shared their thoughts, with one commenting: "Fantastic interview. Jamie Foreman so underrated as an actor." Another viewer admitted to having preconceptions about Jamie, saying: "I had misconceptions of Jamie, thinking he would be cocky etc. Dignified, lovely man, I absolutely have the utmost respect for Jamie. Beautiful guy." A third chimed in with praise, remarking: "Great interview and what a talented, humble bloke." EastEnders continues to captivate audiences, airing Monday to Thursday at 7:30 pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders cast had no idea about big return until it aired - and one star cried

EastEnders legend and Doctor Who favourite Anita Dobson has shared the challenge of keeping her soap comeback as Angie Watts a secret from her close friends, and why she agreed to return Soap legend Anita Dobson didn't immediately agree to her EastEnders comeback in February, in an incredible soap moment that has now won her her first British Soap Award. The Angie Watts star, who recently proved a hit in Doctor Who as Mrs Flood AKA a new incarnation of the Rani, had to really think about the genius comeback that left viewers, and cast members, reeling. It was kept top secret with late character Angie appearing in the 40th anniversary episodes. ‌ Very few people knew it was happening until it aired during the BBC soap's big week a few months back. Even Anita's co-stars and close friends, including Kathy Beale actress Gillian Taylforth, were kept out of the loop. ‌ They didn't know until they saw the scene that Anita was back as Angie for the first time in decades, and years after she was killed off offscreen. Gillian confessed she was left emotional watching Angie return to the show to save her dying daughter Sharon Watts, who had been injured in The Queen Vic explosion. The moment left viewers with goosebumps as Angie urged her daughter to fight and stay alive, there for her in her time of need. But this wasn't the first time Anita had been asked to reprise the role. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards, Anita revealed how she'd been asked before but it never felt right. This time around, Anita gave it some consideration and the rest is history. She spilled: "I did have to think about it. I wasn't sure because they'd asked me to come back a couple of times before and it never seemed quite right but I do think it's divine." But Anita confessed it was so hard to keep it a secret, filming the scenes two months earlier with barely anyone knowing. Anita said: "It was very difficult. We filmed it before Christmas. Gillian [Taylforth] didn't even know. I had to keep it a secret until February, that was a challenge. but it was worth it. The reaction was so good." ‌ It's then that Gillian told us she had no idea her close friend and former colleague had reprised her iconic role for the special episodes. The moment she saw Anita back onscreen left her and other co-stars in shock, with Gillian super emotional too. She told us: "We didn't know. It was an amazing moment. We were all like so shocked, we couldn't believe it. We had no idea, Letitia [Dean] didn't tell us. We really had no idea it was happening, it was amazing and such an amazing scene. "It was so emotional and I was so teary. The way Angie came back and got Sharon out of that, you know, on her way out [meaning Sharon was dying]. Mum came back and saved her." ‌ She went on: "Kathy has mentioned Angie a few times, 'your mu, used to say this', we still mention her. I love this girl I really do." But Anita says now was the right time, and it gave her the closure she needed years on from Angie's exit. Anita said: "It was perfect and it felt like closure for Angie and for me." With Anita returning to the set to film a special episode with Ross Kemp for the 40th, and a podcast with Lacey Turner, the actress revealed all about being welcomed back by the cast. ‌ She said: "They took me into The Queen Vic and everyone was going crazy. It was so lovely." Gillian added: "It brought back so many memories from 40 years ago. It was gorgeous together, we had a wonderful time." Anita also told us about her Doctor Who role, and the moment onscreen that sparked "a riot". She said when asked about the reaction to her reveal as being the Rani: "It actually wasn't as crazy as when Mrs Flood looked at the camera and winked, that caused a riot! "That didn't because a lot of people are thinking, ''where is she going to go from here?''. That sister of mine is so bossy but the outfit was great."
