'Sir, we're activating your credit card'—How one call almost emptied your bank account

It started like any regular post-delivery routine.
Abhishek Walia had just received his new credit card when he got a call from someone claiming to be from the card issuer. The voice was calm, courteous, and well-spoken. 'Sir, we're helping customers activate their cards quickly to avoid deactivation,' the caller said.
What followed was a script that felt disturbingly legitimate.
The caller confirmed Abhishek's name, his bank, and the last four digits of the credit card—details that would make anyone believe the call was real. Slowly, the caller asked for the card expiry date, the CVV, and eventually, an OTP that had just landed on Abhishek's phone.
Something didn't feel right.
'I asked why they needed my OTP for card activation. He said it was mandatory. That's when I hung up,' Abhishek wrote in a now-viral LinkedIn post.
Trusting his instinct, he called the official customer care number—only to find a fraud transaction had just been attempted using his card. Fortunately, it was blocked.
He was lucky. Many others aren't.
Here are some simple, actionable steps you can implement to stay ahead of fraud and stay safe:
1. Enable real time alerts: Always enable email or SMS alerts for each credit card transaction. It will ensure you receive communication immediately upon any unauthorized spend which allows you to take necessary action before any harm is caused.
2. Regularly review your account: Make it a habit to daily view card transactions online or to view through your banking app. It takes just a minute each day to see if unexpected charges come up, and perhaps catch it early.
3. Don't give out your card information: Never share your OTP, CVV number or PIN (even to people who say they are from your bank). Banks do not want this information from you.
4. Set daily or transaction limits: If you reduce the limits on your credit card to zero you will minimise loss in the event that your card gets compromised. These limits can now be set in a few seconds on most banking apps.
5. Be aware of POS and ATM devices: Before using them, always check the keypad and card slot are intact. If you see anything suspicious sticking out of the slot or anything loose, do not finalise the purchase.
6. Act quickly if you notice fraud: Under RBI rules, you may find you have no liability if you report an unauthorised transaction within 3 working days. Put in a written complaint, freeze the card immediately and keep a copy.
7. If not solved, escalate: If your bank will not take any action or is delaying, then take all of the additional documentation to the RBI Ombudsman. The sooner you escalate, the sooner the resolution happens.
Abhishek's quick thinking saved him from financial loss. But his story is a reminder that scams no longer come with red flags and broken English—they come dressed as customer service.
So the next time someone calls to 'help' you activate your credit card, remember: help shouldn't ask for your OTP.

Surat: A recently terminated assistant general manager of Surat-based green energy firm KP Group has been booked for defamation and criminal intimidation after he allegedly abused and threatened the company and its employees on accused, Ashish Gupta , was employed with KP Group's subsidiary, KPI Green Energy Ltd, on June 16 but was relieved from his duties on July 5 due to unsatisfactory performance. According to the FIR filed by company representative Manoj Shahu, Gupta's technical knowledge and work output were found lacking, prompting management to terminate his services just 20 days into his after his dismissal, Gupta allegedly took to LinkedIn and posted defamatory content targeting the company and its staff. He was also accused of using abusive language and tagging the company in multiple the company's HR head contacted him to address the matter, Gupta reportedly became aggressive and issued threats. According to the complaint, he warned that any employee who stood in his way would be 'killed' and demanded to be July 9, Gupta allegedly posted three more defamatory messages on LinkedIn, claiming KP Group owed him Rs 10 lakh and continuing his verbal attacks on the company's personnel. The company clarified that it had already credited Rs 4.54 lakh into Gupta's bank account, which included salary for 20 days, one month's advance salary, and reimbursement for hotel police have registered a case against Gupta under Sections 365(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for defamation and criminal intimidation. An investigation has been initiated.

New Delhi: A signature in Washington has stirred up serious questions in New Delhi. When US President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law, it kicked off a shift that could redraw the global financial map in addition to giving a greenlight to dollar-backed stablecoins. What looks like a domestic crypto law is now reverberating in central banks, fintech firms and policy circles around the world, especially in emerging economies like India. The Act, at its core, gives formal structure to stablecoins that are pegged to the US dollar. It demands full reserve backing, regular audits, KYC checks and anti-money laundering protocols. All the ingredients of traditional finance now wrapped around a digital asset. With this one move, the United States has set the tone for a new generation of money – which is private, programmable, borderless and unmistakably dollar-based. Stablecoins like USDC (a regulated digital currency) and USDT (a blockchain-enabled platform) were already popular. Now they have the seal of legitimacy. It is no longer a crypto trading tool but emerging as real-world instruments of exchange. Payment platforms, remittance services, e-commerce firms and even small traders could begin using them as alternatives to banks. What is being built is a parallel channel as well as a potential competitor to traditional money systems. India is paying attention. Officials at the Reserve Bank of India know what this means. The efficiency of stablecoins is attractive. Instant cross-border payments, cheaper remittances and faster settlements are something that the traditional banking network has struggled to deliver. India's vast fintech ecosystem, from UPI to Paytm, is built for scale. But scale may not be enough. Dollar-based stablecoins could sneak into India's economy in invisible ways. Exporters and importers could begin settling trades using them. Freelancers and tech workers might accept payments in digital dollars. And slowly, the rupee could lose its grip in corners of the economy where the RBI once ruled without question. Behind the scenes, policymakers are nervous. Stablecoins can be hard to track. Their mobility makes them hard to tax. And when demand for digital dollars rises, local currencies can take a hit. What the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) calls 'cryptoisation' is not merely a theory anymore, it is a warning. If this parallel system gains traction, India's central bank tools, which are interest rates, liquidity controls and capital flow regulations, might not be enough. The RBI has its pilot projects for the e-rupee. They are promising. But the competition is not waiting. The United States is moving fast. It may not have a digital dollar yet, but it has something just as powerful. For India, the road ahead is foggy. One option is to create a strong rupee-backed stablecoin that can compete on global platforms. Another is to impose strict controls on foreign stablecoins before they embed themselves too deeply. And third is to find a middle ground that supports innovation while protecting the core of monetary policy. The stakes are economic and geopolitical. The GENIUS Act is about control. If the old world was built on petrodollars and treasury bonds, the new one may run on digital tokens that carry the stars and stripes. Every stablecoin minted under U.S. regulation is another extension of its soft power. Meanwhile, Europe is working on a digital euro. China is expanding the e-CNY. And in parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, gold-backed and commodity-tied tokens are being tested. The world is preparing for the next phase of money. But the United States has already made its first big move. India must decide soon. Will it shape its own path, or will it play by rules written elsewhere? One thing is certain – the dollar is not retreating. It is evolving. And it is not knocking on the door anymore. It is already inside the house.

US tech giants Meta, X and LinkedIn have formally appealed against a groundbreaking VAT claim by Italy, setting the stage for what could become a defining legal battle over how digital services are taxed across the European Union. The Reuters report, citing four sources with direct knowledge of the matter, highlighted that the companies filed their appeals with Italy's first-instance tax court in mid-July after failing to reach a settlement with Italian tax authorities. The case is notable not only for its scale but also because it represents the first instance in which Italy has taken Big Tech to full trial proceedings, diverging from previous negotiations that typically concluded with settlements. At the heart of the dispute lies Italy's novel interpretation of value-added tax (VAT) rules. Authorities argue that the act of users registering for free access to platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn should be considered taxable. The rationale is that in exchange for a membership account, users provide personal data, effectively constituting a transaction with economic value. Should the Italian courts uphold this interpretation, it could have sweeping implications for companies far beyond social media, potentially including airlines, retailers, publishers, and any other business that offers digital access in exchange for user data or profiling consent. The Italian Revenue Agency is seeking €887.6 million from Meta, €12.5 million from X, and approximately €140 million from LinkedIn. These claims were issued in March, with the companies' response deadline passing in mid-July, prompting the formal appeals. Meta said in a statement to Reuters that it had 'cooperated fully with the authorities' but 'strongly disagrees with the idea that providing access to online platforms to users should be subject to VAT'. LinkedIn said it had "nothing to share at this time", while X has not responded to requests for comment. Notably, the report also revealed that Italy is preparing to request an advisory opinion from the European Commission. Questions are expected to be formally submitted by the Economy Ministry to the EU's VAT Committee, an independent, non-binding advisory body, by early November. A response could be forthcoming by spring 2026. Though non-binding, a negative opinion from the committee could lead Italy to abandon the VAT claim and suspend related criminal investigations, insiders suggest. Legal experts warn that the implications of Italy's approach, if endorsed, could ripple across the 27-nation EU, where VAT rules are broadly harmonised. 'It could rewrite the rulebook on what constitutes a taxable transaction in the digital economy,' one tax adviser said. The broader dispute comes amid persistent tensions between US tech companies and European regulators. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Meta will not adjust its controversial "pay-or-consent" data model, despite growing scrutiny from Brussels. Separately, the Financial Times revealed the European Commission has paused one of its probes into Elon Musk's platform X, reportedly in an effort to preserve momentum in ongoing transatlantic trade talks.
