NFL analyst says this Rams defender could be a first-time Pro Bowler in 2025

USA Todaya day ago
The Los Angeles Rams have a lot of potential Pro Bowlers heading into the 2025 season.
Jared Verse, the only Rams player to make the Pro Bowl in 2024, is the most likely one to earn another nod. Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Kyren Williams are all good enough to make the team, too.
But NFL.com's Kevin Patra believes one other Rams player has the chance to make his first Pro Bowl: Defensive end Braden Fiske.
Seemingly every report out of Rams camp this summer has touched on Fiske standing out in a crowded defensive front. The focus most of the offseason had rightly been on Jared Verse, a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, but Fiske deserves some love. Last season, Fiske generated 44 pressures and 8.5 sacks -- not too shabby for a rookie DT. His 10.9% QB pressure rate ranked ninth among all defensive tackles last season. While big men rarely walk from college to the Pro Bowl, we do generally see sizeable leaps from the truly elite after a full offseason in the NFL. Fiske boasts the power, interior quickness, strength and hands to be a menace alongside Verse, Byron Young, Kobie Turner, Poona Ford and the rest of the Rams' fearsome front.
Fiske had the accolades to make it as a rookie, but defensive end is harder with bigger names like Nick Bosa or Micah Parsons on the board. He'll need to have another insane season to make the Pro Bowl, but he's proven to have the ability to garner almost double-digit sacks on his own.
If Fiske can make the Year 2 leap, there's no reason why he can't also earn a Pro Bowl nod in 2025.

Instant analysis: Texans set tone with C.J. Stroud touchdown en route to 20-3 victory

First on the board 🫡📺 : @abc13houston It's just a preseason game, but a win is also a win. Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud connected early with wide receiver Nico Collins on a 6-yard touchdown to serve as the nail in the coffin on the Carolina Panthers' comeback chances in a 20-3 victory at NRG Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Stroud, who enters his third season, also connected with Christian Kirk and Jayden Higgins for a pair of first-down conversions in two drives before taking the bench. He finished 6-of-8 passing for 44 yards and the lone score. While Stroud and Collins headlined the offensive personnel, they weren't the only two impressive pieces under new play-caller Nick Caley. Former Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb ran five times for 25 yards in his Texans' debut after spending seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns. With the second-team offense, tight end Irv Smith Jr. finished with a team-leading five catches for 46 yards. As for the defense, Houston set the tone on the opening play against former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young when Derek Stingley secured an interception on a pass intended for 2025 first-round pick Tetoria McMillian, but a holding call by Will Anderson Jr. negated the takeaway. Even without the interception, Young was 0 for 2 passing and was sacked once Saturday in two drives. Once the second-team unit took over, takeaways became common. Rookie Jaylin Smith intercepted third-string quarterback Jack Plummer before Damon Arnette joined in on the fun. Following his pick, Houston extended its lead by 17 thanks to a British Brooks 1-yard score with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Houston hits the road once more on Wednesday for a joint practice ahead of Saturday's game against the Detroit Lions. It's unclear if the Texans will play starters, but after Saturday, it's not really needed.

Patriots beat Vikings 20-12 as rookies Henderson and Chism each record another preseason TD

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New England rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Efton Chism III each had another preseason touchdown, and the Patriots beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-12 on Saturday. Henderson, the second-round draft pick from national champion Ohio State who's been turning heads in training camp and tracking toward a prominent role in the backfield, rushed for 20 yards with an 8-yard score on four carries during a two-drive stint for the first-team offense. Henderson had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. The Patriots held a handful of projected starters out, including four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered halfway through his lone season with the Houston Texans. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye started against an all-backups Vikings defense and went 4 for 7 for 46 yards with a delay-of-game penalty and an overthrow that was nearly intercepted but dropped by Tavierre Thomas. Chism made another compelling case for a regular-season roster spot with six receptions from backup QB Joshua Dobbs for 71 yards and a score. He caught a short throw on third-and-9 from the 12 and broke six tackle attempts as he twisted and muscled his way into the end zone. With Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and veterans Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins on the Patriots' roster, there might be only one opening for a wide receiver. Chism, who was undrafted out of Eastern Washington, will certainly get a long look. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch last week. Vikings play it safe The two teams had two days of joint practices this week, providing plenty of valuable tests for players in situational drills in a controlled setting, and Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was more than satisfied with the work. Not a single projected starter on either side of the ball suited up for Minnesota, and several key backups who are locks to make the team were given the afternoon off, too. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led one 12-play drive last week, wore an earpiece on the sideline while Sam Howell started. Howell, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in April after the veteran backup market dried up, went 1 for 5 with an interception he forced off his back foot under pressure. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who has been the best of the backups in camp, went 15 for 27 for 156 yards while playing the whole second half. His final throw from the 13-yard line on the last play of the game was tipped and intercepted in the end zone by Kyle Dugger. ___
