Chris Tarrant's ex-wife Ingrid reveals the EXTREME lengths she went to prove he was cheating on her

Daily Mail06-05-2025

Chris Tarrant 's ex-wife Ingrid has revealed how she had to act like an undercover soldier to prove her husband was cheating on her after hiring a private detective who wasn't up to scratch.
Ingrid, 70, told how after her suspicions grew, her first plan to wire a tracking device into Chris's car came unstuck when he bought a new vehicle.
So she then had to start crawling across their bedroom floor as he slept to take his keys and keep hiding a burner phone in his new car to keep tabs on his movements.
Ingrid had suspected the TV and radio host was seeing another woman a few years earlier, but when she confronted her then husband he denied it, saying his strange behaviour was due to anxiety over presenting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
Speaking on the Suddenly Single podcast, she said: 'I thought 'something's not right'. I asked him outright "are you thinking of having an affair? Are you having an affair?" (He said) "Oh, don't be ridiculous, of course not" - and I 100% believed him.'
However, years later, she asked him again and didn't believe him when he again denied it.
She continued: 'I just didn't believe him when he said no. Something was telling me he was lying.
'I had to get the car hot wired - tracker, that would run off the car and not batteries so that it would always be fully charged. But I had to get an excuse to get his car for the day to have it fitted.
'So I asked to borrow it and it was like 'Why?' I said because I need to get some straw for the rabbit or guinea pig from the stables.
'I'd always had convertible cars. It was like 'what's wrong with yours?' (I said) 'By the time I get back all the straw will have come out'.
'It took them so long to wire it because he'd just had installed those video screens in the back of the head rest for the kids. They really struggled with it.
'Then he had another car but I bought a burner phone. But you had to keep charging that up.
'At the time there were moments when I thought 'this is insane' because I would be shimmying across the floor. I thought 'I would do really well in the army here because I was shuffling along being really, really quiet to get the keys to go back out to the car to open it up to get the phone out to charge it.
'I had so many sleepless nights because I had to do it while he was asleep and before he woke up in the morning. So I had a little window of opportunity to keep charging the phone.
Ingrid had suspected Chris was cheating years earlier, but when she confronted him, he denied it, saying his behaviour was due to anxiety over presenting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
'I could track him where he'd gone. Then they (the private detective firm) knew where to follow. They knew where to go, I couldn't do that.
'They weren't doing very well, I said 'This is what's going to happen at this time'.'
Ingrid would work out the route Chris would have to use if he was going where he claimed and then give the private detective the heads up to check if her husband took a different route.
But she said: 'They missed him. I just thought "For God's sake". So I got rid of them.
'And then I got another one. I said "I need photographs." At the same time I thought, "Is this really happening?" So I thought I actually have to have a photograph so there is no mistake here.'
Ingrid said after she eventually forced Chris to admit he'd been caught, another private detective contacted her saying her work had done wonders for snoop's businesses.
She said: 'There's a private detective who contacted me - not any of the ones that I used - afterwards via my agent and said I did the best favour to him because suddenly it reminded people, "Of course, why don't you do that? If you're not sure just get a private detective on to them".'
Ingrid also told how Chris told her she needed psychiatric help over her suspicions.
She said: 'It stops you from going mad because he would have convinced me I was imagining things - and did try to - and said I should book myself into The Priory.
'I know who I am, but if I hadn't, I'd have just thought 'What's the matter with me, it's peri-menopausal'. You could blame yourself for everything but I knew I'm not going mad.'
Chris admitted to having an affair and said in a statement in 2006 that he was 'deeply sorry' for the hurt he caused.
Ingrid believes he was cheating for at least seven years before she trapped him.
The couple were married between 1991 and 2007 and had two children, including radio presenter Toby.
A representative for Chris declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.

Investigation launched after deportee breaks free on Heathrow runway

An inquiry is under way into how an immigration detainee who was being deported from the UK managed to free himself from restraints and started to run, close to the takeoff paths of planes at Heathrow airport. The man who was captured on film sprinting across the runway at Terminal 2 on Sunday evening was about to be deported to India but managed to break free from the guards holding on to his waist restraint belt while escorting him to the plane. A spokesperson for Mitie, which holds a Home Office contract for removing migrants from the UK, told the Guardian: 'An investigation into the incident is under way. The individual was quickly apprehended, reboarded the flight, and was handed over to the relevant authorities on landing.' The incident came to light because it was captured by a plane spotter and aired on the YouTube channel Big Jet TV. The person who filmed the incident can be heard saying: 'What's going on here? Why would there be people running across the [tarmac]?' After the man was stopped, the narrator added: 'What the hell was that all about? They are stopping aircraft taxiing as well.' Metropolitan police sources confirmed that they played a role in detaining the man and that normal operations then resumed at the airport. John Van Hoogstraten, an aviation expert at Straten Consulting Services Ltd, said: 'What is known as the movement area of the airport is the entire airside. We have to consider all movement in this area, whether it's wildlife or something else. It's always a challenge for airports about how to get people on to planes if they're not using an air bridge. 'The minute an unaccounted person is airside there's no protection about what happens next in operations. In these cases aircraft have to cease operations. They will be told to stop immediately. Safety is paramount. A jet blast is sufficient to severely injure if not kill a person. The reaction of a pilot trying to land a plane and seeing a person try to cross a runway can be devastating.' A Heathrow spokesperson said: 'Working with partners, we have quickly resolved an incident at the airport involving an individual who accessed the airfield taxiway. The airport continues to operate as normal and passengers are travelling as planned.' Home Office sources confirmed that Mitie was investigating the incident.

Love Island SPOILER: Launch show kicks off with MAJOR new couple twist that leaves the girls in shock

Love Island's series 12 launch show is set to kick off with a major new couples twist that will leave the girls stunned. The latest installment of the reality dating show begins on Monday night with host Maya Jama set to introduce a new batch of sexy singletons looking for love. The ladies - Shakira, Meg, Alima, Sophie, Megan and Helena - are first to enter the villa with talk soon turning to the boys they could potentially couple up with. However, in contrast to recent series, it won't be the viewers that will be picking the couples, but instead the girls will be tasked with choosing their boys based on their dating profiles. Explaining the huge change, Maya tells the girls: 'This year things are slightly different. You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality? Come and join me by the pool.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. As the girls line up, she continues: 'Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?' The girls then check out the descriptions of the island's boys - Ben, Dejon, Harry, Conor, Blu and Tommy. They then have to decide to who they'd like to pair up with based on key stats with the boys' name, age, job and a headline. Headlines includes lines such as: 'I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play, so I work very hard...' in order to help the girls make their big decisions. After discussing the boys' profiles and attempting to figure out which lad could be right for them, Maya then forces them to make their choice. Counting to three, the stunner informs the ladies that they must run to their chosen heart, with only one girl allowed to stand next to each heart. With mere seconds to make their choice, it remains to be seen whether they get the man of their choice or will be left to beg for a swap. Meanwhile, following the decisions, the boys then enter the villa and meet their matches one-by-one. 'Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?' Headlines includes lines such as: ' I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play, so I work very hard...' in order to help the girls make their big decisions But will it be love at first write or were the girls too quick to judge their type? It comes as one Love Island star has already been sensationally dumped from the villa, before the launch show has even aired. For one girl, her time on the show is set to be brutally cut short as she's sent packing shortly after her arrival in the first savage twist of the series. It is said that the girl was 'absolutely gutted' by her dismissal which came following the entrance of this year's first bombshell. A source told The Sun: 'This girl will be sorely missed as was already proving to be a big character. They were absolutely gutted to leave.' They continued: 'But the series has twists and turns at every stage and this isn't the usual dumping viewers might expect after a bombshell arrives. 'Executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter has promised drama for the tenth anniversary and this format point will not disappoint.' It comes as the first bombshell has been revealed as Antonia Laites, a 24-year-old pool party girl from Las Vegas. Antonia, who was born in Connecticut but has also resided in Miami, is a sizzling brunette whose day-to-day is looking after the VIP cabanas at the lavish Fontainebleau Resort in Sin City, reports The Sun. The Yank has reportedly strutted in on the first day to stir the pot for the islanders on the very first day. When asked who she is looking for in the villa, the American beauty quipped: 'Someone that can make me laugh - I'm super outgoing. And someone that's quite active. Maybe one day we could start our own family together.' Ahead of her villa debut she dubbed the dating scene in the states a 'mess' as people are there for a 'good time, not a long time'. And it is the British charm that has attracted Toni to the UK version of the show as she confessed that she is attracted to the accent. 'I've lived in three different states and I'm still single. It's time to try something new! I have some British friends and they're pretty charming. I think all Americans love a good accent. British men are just more polite, with better manners,' she added Love Island confirmed the full line-up of contestants joining the upcoming series last week. The ITV2 dating show returns on June 9 and there looks set to be the usual mix of love triangles, bedroom trysts and messy breakups as contestants make their way to the island.
