KUCHING (May 16): The Sarawak government is exploring the use of venture capital to support viable local creative projects, including films and digital content, said the Premier.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government may, through its agency, take equity in projects with market potential to help develop the film industry using digitalisation and content.
'If you create something, film or so on, we are looking into what we call venture capital. You can form a company if your project is viable,' he said during the launch of Jelajah Malaysia Digital (JMD) at Tegas Digital Village here today.
'If your content has a market, maybe somebody else will take equity together with you, just like any film. We have also set aside our venture capital within our budget.'
He pointed out the Sarawak government has invested RM3.5 billion over the past five years to advance digital transformation, positioning the state firmly to meet future economic challenges.
He explained the annual investment of about RM600 million was funded through the state's own revenue and represents a long-term commitment expected to yield significant returns for the people in the future.
'Digitalisation means we must digitise the whole spectrum of our economy,' he said.
To drive Sarawak's digital transformation agenda, Abang Johari said the state government established various agencies such as the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), and the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).
'At the same time, we are also enhancing various basic infrastructures to support a more comprehensive digital ecosystem, so that we remain at the forefront in the digital economy era,' he said.
Recalling his discussions with experts from the London School of Economics (LSE), Abang Johari said Sarawak was commended for being fortunate to possess both capital and natural assets which are resources that must be fully leveraged.
'However, capital alone is not enough. We also need to develop quality human capital with high-level skills to add value to our wealth of resources and generate economic impact.
'This is where digitalisation becomes crucial to enhance processes and add value to our natural assets. We need technology to transform those resources into something of worth.
'That is also why Sarawak has established Tegas Innovation Hubs in several strategic locations, including Sibu, Miri, Sarikei, and Bintulu,' he said.
He explained the innovation hubs serve as platforms for young people to innovate and create content and digital solutions, including in areas such as virtual reality and digital living.
'I am proud to see many of our youth being creative and capable of producing content that adds value.
'This proves that Sarawak is not only rich in natural resources, but also in talent and creativity.
'This is part of the process of creating second and third layers of value, the concept of a 'second life' often referred to in the digital economy,' he added. abang johari creative projects lead Venture Capital

New Selangau road, school to be completed ahead of schedule
SIBU: The construction of a new road to Selangau town and SMK Selangau is targeted for earlier completion, to expedite the delivery of facilities to the people, says Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said the state government aimed to ensure that both projects not only met specifications but were also completed ahead of the stipulated timeframe. 'This road, which provides new access to Selangau town, is supposed to be completed within 12 months, but we have asked for it to be finished within six months. 'The weather conditions are also good, and the work is not too difficult. I hope the Public Works Department (JKR) will continue to monitor the progress of this project comprehensively,' he told reporters after visiting the project site today. According to him, the 450-metre road construction project, valued at RM3.5 million, is fully funded by the state government. It will provide direct access to Selangau town without the need for a long detour from the Pan Borneo Highway, thereby improving traffic flow and benefiting local residents. Uggah, who is also Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, also inspected the construction project for SMK Selangau, which is currently 4.34 per cent ahead of its original schedule. 'This school involves the construction of 18 classrooms with a cost of RM81.008 million. According to the original schedule, it should be completed by June 2027, but we have asked JKR and the contractor to complete it by December 2026 at the latest,' he said. Uggah added that the project was funded by the Federal Government and implemented by the State Government. He expressed confidence that it could be completed on schedule due to stable site conditions and the use of the Industrialised Building System (IBS) method. He further stated that JKR Sarawak would continue to monitor the implementation of both projects to ensure no delays occurred. 'The state government will also not hesitate to terminate the contracts of any project that fails to be completed according to plan, as has been done before,' he stressed.

Sarawak signs MoU with Chinese firms to explore floating solar at Bakun dam
SHANGHAI: The Sarawak government has formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two Chinese companies to jointly undertake various studies and collaborate to explore the potential development of floating solar - with a capacity not exceeding 1,000MW - on the reservoir of the Bakun dam. The MoU was formalised between the Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Ministry, China Three Gorges International Ltd, and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co Ltd at the 2025 International Solar Photovoltaic and Smart Energy Conference (SNEC PV) in Shanghai today. The signatories of the MoU were Sarawak's Permanent Secretary for the Utility and Telecommunication Ministry Datuk Jafri Lias, vice-president of China Three Gorges International Ltd Zhang Kai Hong, and Vice President of Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co Ltd Yang Xing Hai. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, in his speech at the signing ceremony, said Sarawak was pleased to forge this strategic alliance with strong industry partners like CTGI and Shanghai Electric. In a speech read by Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Abang Johari said the strategic alliance would support the state government's aim of ensuring energy security and environmental sustainability. "Sarawak currently has a generation capacity of about 5,900MW, predominantly from renewable hydropower sources. "Sarawak targets a 10GW generation capacity by 2030, and 15GW by 2035, with renewable sources making up over 60 per cent of the capacity mix. "With its vast renewable energy resources, Sarawak has the potential to become a renewable energy powerhouse in the region," Abang Johari said. He said Sarawak's progressive renewable energy policies are accelerating the state's energy transition. He said recent amendments to the Electricity Ordinance in 2023 further underscore Sarawak's commitment to decarbonisation, with enabling provisions for large-scale solar development, consumer-generated electricity, and independent power producer participation. The premier said Sarawak's growing focus on solar energy reflects the state's approach, which includes solar-hybrid rural electrification, hydrogen-integrated solar systems, and the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme to support solar adoption in housing developments. He said Sarawak successfully generated power from its first large-scale solar installation at the Batang Ai Dam in December 2024. He said the 50MW floating solar farm, spanning over 190ha of the Batang Ai reservoir, also marks Sarawak's first integrated hydroelectric and solar power scheme. He said this initiative would pave the way for further development of floating solar projects in Sarawak at other hydropower reservoirs through privately funded investments. The MoU signing was held in conjunction with the SNEC PV+ 18th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition, which is being held from June 10 to 13, 2025, at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai, China. The event is known as the world's largest and most influential PV trade show, attracting more than 3,000 exhibitors from 95 countries.
