Mr Bates Vs The Post Office wins Bafta but fight for victims ‘not over yet'

Creators of the show including actor Toby Jones who played Sir Alan Bates, writer Gwyneth Hughes and producer Patrick Spencer, hopes the Bafta win will keep the scandal at the forefront of the public's mind as subpostmasters continue to wait for compensation.
'It's not over yet. It's a complicated situation. There's several different compensation schemes going on,' Ms Hughes said at a winner's press conference shortly after receiving the award.
'They're all mired in different parts of the government. Nobody seems to know what's happening.
'Our main characters have not been paid. They haven't got their compensation. It's been going for 25 years.
'If we're on front pages tomorrow waving our very heavy statuettes, then that's bound to get it back in people's consciousness and get people to make an effort.'

She also said it was 'very distressing' when she realised the scandal was happening in Britain comparing the situation to something that might occur in a country where 'little people don't have any power'.
'It's a British story. I couldn't believe it was happening in my country. When I first heard about it, I thought that can't be true, that can't be right,' she explained.
Kevin Lygo, managing director of ITV Studios, received the Special Award at the Baftas for commissioning Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, and urged all TV corporations to continue making series to 'make power to account'.
'It really falls to us to remember that these are incredibly important things that must continue to be learned,' he said on stage at the Royal Festival Hall.
'At a time when funding is tricky but not impossible, the ITV and the BBC must continue to make power to account, institutions like the post office to account.
'It is part of a long tradition on TV of these genres that true stories that shine a light on corruption, criminality, miscarriages of justice… but nothing, I think, has had quite the effects Mr Bates' has had.'

He urged for those in power to speed up the compensation process for the subpostmasters still waiting to receive payment.
'It's been successful in every way, except one, which is that they still, many of them, have not got their compensation,' he said.
'So I say to anybody who's in charge of sorting out the compensation, will you hurry up and pay these people what they do?'
Star of the show Jones described the series as being representative of the 'state of the world now'.
Speaking at the winner's press conference, Jones said: 'I think that there's something archetypal about the story that keys into the state of the world now.
'It's not just the postmasters, there's a general sense of disenfranchisement of people feeling cut off from their dreams, cut off from just a lifestyle, cut off from living their lives.'

The show's producer Patrick Spence has called for the media to continue 'spreading the message' and raise awareness about the Horizon scandal.
'I think we've done our bit. We carried the baton for a bit. We need you guys to spread the message that they haven't been paid yet,' he said.
'It's not over, and they're being bamboozled with bureaucracy, so please, we beg you, don't make us make another drama.
'Get the message out and tell them seriously if there are still people in abject poverty waiting for compensation.'

Coronation Street fans 'know what's going on with Costello' and he's 'not corrupt'

Coronation Street viewers were left divided over some suspicious behaviour by DI Costello on the ITV soap, amid hints he could be corrupt after scenes with Kit Green Lisa Swain was left suspicious of DI Costello on Coronation Street on Monday, having initially believed her colleague Kit Green was the one hiding something. But DS Swain is not the only one sure something much bigger is going on, with fans divided over what Costello could be hiding. ‌ In the latest episode, we saw Kit seemingly make a discovery before noting down a phone number and Costello's name. So when Lisa figured this out she was confused and keen to get to the bottom of it, even dropping Kit in it when she asked her boss Costello all about it. ‌ It comes amid fans believing Costello is a corrupt officer and that the mystery police files he's refusing Kit and Lisa access to could expose him, and his possible link to Becky Swain's death. Nothing has been confirmed, and while Costello recently warned Lisa away she doesn't seem overly worried about him. ‌ In fact it's Kit she knows is up to something after he recently tried to access Becky's files. It's this week that he admits to his partner Sarah Platt that said files, from a case Becky was working on before her death years earlier, seem to be linked to a case he is on at the moment. The fact he was digging left him getting scolded by Costello, and Lisa confronted him too. But what neither of them know is that Kit has continued to look into matters in secret, but Lisa may have blown his cover. She asked Costello why Kit would have noted down his name and number, knowing it wasn't the one she had for him. Costello seemed clueless, but you could also tell he was panicked by the idea that Kit was onto him. Whatever it is he's hiding wasn't made clear, but fans said there was a moment where his "mask slipped" and it became clear what he was up to. With him warning Lisa to stay away from Kit, telling her he will drag her down with him, his anti-Kit campaign was evident. ‌ Fans were once again under the belief that Costello needs the pair to stop looking into the files, but to also stay apart from each other. That said, some fans have come up with a new theory linked to this, but it would suggest Costello isn't the corrupt one after all. Some viewers are speculating Costello is protecting someone else who is corrupt, or perhaps someone higher up is the one to be worried about, and he's looking into matters but wants no one else involved. One fan said on social media: "I don't think it's Costello it's too easy maybe he protected someone higher up. Another fan questioned: "Possibly, could be a higher up trying to frame him? He definitely knows something though. Whether it's actually him or not." So is someone out to get Costello? Or is he hiding something seriously dark, and could it lead to the truth about Becky's death being revealed? The scenes did nothing to cool theories of Costello being linked to this for some fans, but we'll all just have to wait and see! Strictly stars announce they are engaged three years after meeting on show

TYLER West and Molly Rainsford have announced their engagement three years after meeting on Strictly Come Dancing. The celebrity pair first met when they competed on the BBC favourite back in 2022. 4 Now the pair have shared Tyler got down on one knee while on a romantic holiday in Mykonos, Greece last week – and Molly happily said yes. Sharing a video from the special moment on Instagram, the post read: "Found our forever 🤍 10.8.2025." In the clip, Molly was seen in a pink tube top and matching skirt, as Tyler walked her to a balcony that overlooked the sea to watch the sunset. Believing it to be a photoshoot, Molly was completely oblivious as she looked out at the view. But when she's told to turn around by the photographer, she is seen looking stunned when she sees Tyler one knee behind her. Looking stunned, Molly was seen clapping her hand over her mouth in shock. An emotional Tyler then tells her: "I don't know where to start." While some of his speech has been kept private, he added: "So I'm hoping you can continue making me the luckiest man on this Earth, like you do every single day. "So baby... will you marry me?" With both of them in tears, Molly happily accepts, and after hugging and kissing, Tyler can be seen punching the air, declaring: "Yes! Get in! That's what I'm talking about." Loved ones and fans were quick to share their congratulations, with Melvin Odoom saying: "Why am I smiling at my phone so hard! Congratulations guys ❤️🎉🙏🏾" This story is currently being updated. 4 4

It was the second most complained about Love Island week in history - the first was season seven when Faye Winter kicked off after Casa Amor with total of 29,101 in just one week. Despite viewer's concern, the regulator will not be taking any further action. A spokesperson said."We carefully assessed the complaints we received about this series of Love Island. "We recognise that emotionally charged or confrontational scenes can upset some viewers. "But, in our view, negative behaviour in the villa was not shown in a positive light, and contestants were seen supporting or apologising to each other. "We also took into account that the format of this reality show is well-established, and viewers would expect to see highs and lows as relationships and friendships are tested." Ofcom received 14,167 complaints about the ITV reality series, including 24 about spin-off show Love Island: Unseen Bits, with the highest number of complaints coming on July 24, which saw 3,549 complaints relating to alleged bullying behaviour towards contestant Shakira Khan. Other complaints related to further alleged bullying of Khan, as well as fellow contestants Toni Laites, Yasmin Pettet, Meg Moore and Helena Ford, concern over contestants' mental health throughout the series, and Dejon Noel-Williams's behaviour towards Meg. Further complaints were made about the show's producers bringing contestant Megan Forte Clarke back onto the programme after she was dumped from the villa, and alleged race and gender based discrimination. Love Island's 12th series ran from June 9 to August 4 and Toni Laites and Cach Mercer took home the £50k, while Khan and Harry Cooksley finished as runners-up.
