Luis Enrique applauds keeper Chevalier after dream PSG debut
Lucas Chevalier impressed on his debut as Paris St Germain's new first-choice goalkeeper on Wednesday in their Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur, drawing praise from manager Luis Enrique.
The 23-year-old former Lille keeper was thrust into the spotlight after Luis Enrique made it clear earlier this week that Gianluigi Donnarumma had been axed from the squad, prompting the Italian international to begin searching for a new club.
Chevalier, who arrived at the club on Sunday, earned praise from teammates and fans alike after making several acrobatic saves, including Micky van de Ven's attempt during the penalty shootout.
"We relied on Lucas ... he just arrived, but it was time for him to show off. We're very happy because he made it," Luis Enrique told reporters after PSG beat Tottenham 4-3 on penalties.
"This is PSG, you have to know how to handle the pressure, Lucas is a top-class goalkeeper, he's capable of it. He did his job, welcome to him with a trophy."
Luis Enrique admitted that the publicity surrounding Donnarumma was far from ideal for the club.
"Everyone was talking about the situation; his (Lucas's position) wasn't easy, but he showed great character," Luis Enrique added.

The 29-year-old Scotsman, who fired a PGA Tour career-low 62 on Aug 14 as he closed with six straight birdies, birdied six in all for round two to stand on 14-under 126 after 36 holes at Caves Valley in suburban Baltimore. 'Great two days' work,' MacIntyre said. 'If you leave yourself in the right positions, you can be aggressive with the putts... I feel like my iron play has been top drawer this week and just continue to do that.' Scheffler, the season points leader, was next on 131 after a 65 in his PGA-best 13th bogey-free round of the season. 'It was nice to have a clean card today, no bogeys,' Scheffler said. 'Did some good things out there. Five shots back going into the weekend is not too bad with the way Bob is playing right now. Did a good job to keep within shouting distance of him.' 'I've been putting really well for a long time now. It was just finding the confidence in the tee to green game and I feel like I've done that.' MacIntyre, who began the day with a three-stroke lead over England's Tommy Fleetwood, with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler another stroke adrift, started strong again. Chicago – After Khamzat Chimaev burst onto the mixed martial arts scene in 2020 with a flurry of fast, violent stoppages that suggested a champion-in-waiting, he finally gets his shot at Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold when he takes on incumbent middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 in Chicago. The Chechen-born 31-year-old, who started his professional career in Sweden before moving to the United Arab Emirates, was long seen as an unstoppable force until his career was disrupted by illness and visa issues. UFC 319 will see Chimaev put his unbeaten record on the line against the unorthodox South African on Aug 16 (Aug 17, Singapore time). 'I think he's ready, I'm ready, just going in, fireworks,' Chimaev told a media conference on Aug 14 that saw his opponent roundly booed by members of the public in attendance. His troubles were not over, however, and Chimaev failed to make weight for the main event of UFC 279 against Nate Diaz in Las Vegas in September 2022. He missed the welterweight non-title fight limit of 77.6kg by 3.4kg and was replaced in the bout by Tony Ferguson. Chimaev submitted Kevin Holland in a hastily-arranged fight at a higher weight class on the same card, but subsequently struggled to get a visa to enter the United States due to his association with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. That led to Chimaev moving to Abu Dhabi and taking out citizenship in the UAE, and the fighter credited US President Donald Trump's return to the White House for the fact that he was granted a new visa to compete there earlier in 2025. 'Everyone knows I didn't have the visa (before),' Chimaev said when asked at a recent open workout why he had not fought in the US in recent years. 'That's why I (only fought) in Abu Dhabi. Now, Donald Trump is here, so we go for a fight.' Between Chimaev and what once seemed like his destiny is du Plessis, whose awkward, walk-forward style defies definition. 'He (Chimaev) is so certain he's becoming world champion, and I'm here to say no,' du Plessis said. 'There's no way you're becoming world champion while I'm the champion.
