Lucas Chevalier impressed on his debut as Paris St Germain's new first-choice goalkeeper on Wednesday in their Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur, drawing praise from manager Luis Enrique.
The 23-year-old former Lille keeper was thrust into the spotlight after Luis Enrique made it clear earlier this week that Gianluigi Donnarumma had been axed from the squad, prompting the Italian international to begin searching for a new club.
Chevalier, who arrived at the club on Sunday, earned praise from teammates and fans alike after making several acrobatic saves, including Micky van de Ven's attempt during the penalty shootout.
"We relied on Lucas ... he just arrived, but it was time for him to show off. We're very happy because he made it," Luis Enrique told reporters after PSG beat Tottenham 4-3 on penalties.
"This is PSG, you have to know how to handle the pressure, Lucas is a top-class goalkeeper, he's capable of it. He did his job, welcome to him with a trophy."
Luis Enrique admitted that the publicity surrounding Donnarumma was far from ideal for the club.
"Everyone was talking about the situation; his (Lucas's position) wasn't easy, but he showed great character," Luis Enrique added.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to visit India from Aug 18, China's foreign ministry says

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox BEIJING – Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi will visit India from Aug 18 to Aug 20, China's foreign ministry said in a statement on Aug 16 , for talks about a disputed border in the Himalayas. This is only the second such meeting since a deadly clash in 2020 between Indian and Chinese troops at the border. Relations between the two Asian giants have been thawing since an agreement in October 2024 on patrolling their Himalayan border, easing a five-year standoff that had hurt trade, investment and air travel. Relations were further boosted in recent weeks amid new tensions in India-US ties after decades of progress , analysts said, as US President Donald Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports to the United States – one of the highest levels among Washington's strategic partners. The long-time rivals China and India are quietly and cautiously strengthening ties against the backdrop of Mr Trump's unpredictable approach to both. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of August when he travels to China – his first visit in seven years – to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a regional security bloc. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre fires a 64 to stay atop BMW Championship

WASHINGTON – Robert MacIntyre fired a bogey-free six-under 64 to seize a five-stroke lead over top-ranked Scottie Scheffler after the Aug 15 second round of the BMW Championship. The 29-year-old Scotsman, who fired a PGA Tour career-low 62 on Aug 14 as he closed with six straight birdies, birdied six in all for round two to stand on 14-under 126 after 36 holes at Caves Valley in suburban Baltimore. 'Great two days' work,' MacIntyre said. 'If you leave yourself in the right positions, you can be aggressive with the putts... I feel like my iron play has been top drawer this week and just continue to do that.' Scheffler, the season points leader, was next on 131 after a 65 in his PGA-best 13th bogey-free round of the season. 'It was nice to have a clean card today, no bogeys,' Scheffler said. 'Did some good things out there. Five shots back going into the weekend is not too bad with the way Bob is playing right now. Did a good job to keep within shouting distance of him.' Sweden's Ludvig Aberg birdied three of the last five holes to shoot 64 and stand second on 132, one stroke ahead of Japan's Hideki Matsuyama with England's Tommy Fleetwood and Americans Maverick McNealy and Michael Kim on 134. MacIntyre, runner-up to J.J. Spaun at June's US Open, managed his lowest opening 36-hole score to par in a PGA event, three strokes better than 2024 at Myrtle Beach. Top stories Swipe. Select. 'I've been putting really well for a long time now. It was just finding the confidence in the tee to green game and I feel like I've done that.' MacIntyre, who began the day with a three-stroke lead over England's Tommy Fleetwood, with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler another stroke adrift, started strong again. He sank a birdie putt from just inside five feet at the first hole and rolled in a 17-footer for birdie at the par-five fourth. 'The way I've been rolling it, it's not a surprise,' MacIntyre said of his strong start. He sank another birdie putt from just beyond seven feet at the seventh and at 11, MacIntyre rolled it to within three feet of the hole and sank his short birdie putt. MacIntyre drained a 28-foot birdie putt at the 14th and reached the green in two at the par-five 16th to set up a tap-in birdie. 'A low drive to stay short of the bunker and then probably hit the longest three-wood I've had on tour, it was 281 (yards) to the front edge and I absolutely smashed it,' MacIntyre said of his effort at 16. 'Left quite a tricky putt but the job is not to make three, the job is to make four and just nudged it down to the hole and knocked it in.' MacIntyre, whose two PGA wins came in 2024 at the Canadian and Scottish Opens, is projected to jump from 20th to third on the season points list, with only the top 30 advancing from the BMW, the second FedExCup play-off event, to next week's Tour Championship in Atlanta. Scheffler, whose four victories this season include Major triumphs at the PGA Championship and Open Championship, hopes to next week become the first back-to-back FedExCup winner. Matsuyama birdied four of the last eight holes to also shoot a bogey-free 64 and stand on 133 while Fleetwood only managed a 69 and fell eight off MacIntyre's pace. 'Disappointing finish,' Fleetwood said. 'Felt like I played good again. I'm in fifth place, so it's hard to moan too much about it.' World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, second in the play-off standings, fired a 66 to stand 11th on 136, 10 off the pace. 'I just want to try to play a good weekend and feel a little bit better about my game going into the Tour Championship,' McIlroy said. AFP

Khamzat Chimaev finally gets UFC title shot after long road to the top

Chicago – After Khamzat Chimaev burst onto the mixed martial arts scene in 2020 with a flurry of fast, violent stoppages that suggested a champion-in-waiting, he finally gets his shot at Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold when he takes on incumbent middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 in Chicago. The Chechen-born 31-year-old, who started his professional career in Sweden before moving to the United Arab Emirates, was long seen as an unstoppable force until his career was disrupted by illness and visa issues. UFC 319 will see Chimaev put his unbeaten record on the line against the unorthodox South African on Aug 16 (Aug 17, Singapore time). 'I think he's ready, I'm ready, just going in, fireworks,' Chimaev told a media conference on Aug 14 that saw his opponent roundly booed by members of the public in attendance. 'I've come to take over, man, to take his head and go.' Both fighters made the 83.9kg limit at weigh-in on Aug 15, setting up a mouth-watering clash between Chimaev's smothering wrestling and hard-hitting groundwork and the sheer unpredictability of du Plessis, who is also 31. Chimaev roared out of the traps when he entered the UFC in July 2020, submitting John Phillips in the second round of his debut with the promotion before making an incredibly quick turnaround by dropping down to welterweight 10 days later and knocking out Rhys McKee in the opening round. He was back in the cage again less than two months later to score a knockout win over Gerald Meerschaert in 17 seconds that looked to have put him on a fast-track to title contention. Let's get the crowds out first Asia 11,000 properties without power after 4.9-magnitude quake strikes near east coast of Australia Asia Move over, Labubu – Chiikawa is the new craze in Hong Kong Chimaev's meteoric rise was abruptly derailed when he tested positive for Covid-19 in December 2020 and such were his struggles to recover from the illness that he announced his retirement from the sport in March 2021, only to relent shortly afterwards. His troubles were not over, however, and Chimaev failed to make weight for the main event of UFC 279 against Nate Diaz in Las Vegas in September 2022. He missed the welterweight non-title fight limit of 77.6kg by 3.4kg and was replaced in the bout by Tony Ferguson. Chimaev submitted Kevin Holland in a hastily-arranged fight at a higher weight class on the same card, but subsequently struggled to get a visa to enter the United States due to his association with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. That led to Chimaev moving to Abu Dhabi and taking out citizenship in the UAE, and the fighter credited US President Donald Trump's return to the White House for the fact that he was granted a new visa to compete there earlier in 2025. 'Everyone knows I didn't have the visa (before),' Chimaev said when asked at a recent open workout why he had not fought in the US in recent years. 'That's why I (only fought) in Abu Dhabi. Now, Donald Trump is here, so we go for a fight.' Between Chimaev and what once seemed like his destiny is du Plessis, whose awkward, walk-forward style defies definition. 'He (Chimaev) is so certain he's becoming world champion, and I'm here to say no,' du Plessis said. 'There's no way you're becoming world champion while I'm the champion. It's going to be interesting to see. ' REUTERS
