CBS Sports releases 'best, worst case scenarios' for MSU football this season

USA Today9 hours ago

Michigan State football could be in for a very exciting fall on the gridiron or the bottom could completely fall out -- those are the best and worst case scenarios, per Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports.
Fornelli did his annual best and worst case scenarios for each of the Big Ten teams in a recent article, and to no surprise, there is quite a bit variance for the Spartans. If you're looking at the bright side of things, Fornelli sees the Spartans being in contention for a College Football Playoff berth into November and finishing with a 9-3 record as the best case scenario for this upcoming season. On the flip side, the worst case scenario includes an early season loss to Boston College that essentially derails the year and results in the Spartans finishing 3-9.
As I said, those are distant from each other meaning Michigan State has a wide variance for this upcoming season.
Here's the positive best case scenario outlook from Fornelli:
"Aidan Chiles shows development, and while his accuracy continues to be a problem, his decision-making improves tremendously, leading to far fewer turnovers. He also makes enough wow throws to fill social media with highlights. The Spartans knock off Michigan at home thanks to Chiles and a rapidly improving defense under Joe Rossi. A loss to Penn State in November ends the playoff dreams, but when Chiles announces he intends to return for 2026, the nation immediately begins hyping this program up as a 2026 dark horse."
And here's the negative worst case scenario outlook:
"Aidan Chiles continues to make bad decisions that lead to turnovers and continuously put the Michigan State defense in bad positions. An early loss to Boston College shakes the team's confidence a bit, and it craters following consecutive road losses to USC and Nebraska. Things only get worse down the stretch, and Chiles is benched before hitting the portal following the season, leading to a lot of question marks about Jonathan Smith's program heading into 2026."
In reading through Fornelli's assessment, I really have no objections as I also consider Michigan State a true wildcard team for this upcoming season. I recently wrote about how the Spartans have the potential to reach the College Football Playoff if some key things go in their way this season. But I also fear they could hit some rough patches and be battling it out just to reach bowl eligibility again late in November.
With any of these best and worst case scenario articles, it often lands somewhere in the middle. So with that being said, it sounds like Fornelli would peg Michigan State to be about a 6-6 team this upcoming season (maybe give or take one win). Getting to a bowl game is extremely important for the Spartans and Smith this upcoming fall, so they better get to six wins to keep this fanbase relatively happy.

SEC football analysts share optimism about Texas A&M's odds to reach 2025 CFP

With fall camp just around the corner for the Texas A&M football program, a pair of Southeastern Conference analysts previewed the 2025 season expectations for the Aggies. Michael Bratton, otherwise known on social media as SEC Mike, shared optimism for the program's College Football Playoff hopes this year alongside co-host Cousin Shane. According to the breakdown from the duo on "That SEC Podcast", second-year head coach Mike Elko could bring Texas A&M back to the apex of the conference if they can stay healthy. With the No. 10 strength of schedule in the country, the Aggies should be a lock for the CFP if they can find a way to achieve the program's first 10-win season since the Johnny Manziel era in 2012. According to college football analyst Kelley Ford, Elko and company have a 60% chance or more to win nine games this season, even considering the difficult schedule. In Elko's first year at the helm, he led his team to an 8-5 record (5-3 in SEC play) with wins over the likes of Missouri, LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Mississippi State in his first season as a head coach in the conference. While the finish to the season left more to be desired, there were some impressive moments with glimpses of hope for Aggie fans heading into 2025. "There was some big wins. I mean, I picked against them against Mizzou, I think I picked them against Florida and obviously LSU," Shane said. "There were some games I really didn't think Elko was going to get, so I think overall, when you're looking big picture, you're okay as an Aggie fan." One of the biggest factors in the overall success of the program this season will be the Texas A&M running back room that features Le'Veon Moss, Amari Daniels and Reuben Owens II. The health of the group and the ability to set up big plays downfield with a dominant rushing attack are something that the Aggies will need to find again this season. "If I'm an A&M fan, that's why I'm so excited because that's our bread and butter is running the football. When we were 7-1, we were dominant on the ground. If we can get back to that, this is going to be one heck of a year," Bratton said. According to On3 Sports and 247Sports, Texas A&M hauled in the No. 11 portal class in the country this offseason, featuring the likes of NC State standout wide receiver KC Concepcion and Washington Huskies defensive back Jordan Shaw, among others. When previewing the Aggies' schedule this season, Bratton and Shane predicted eight victories and four toss-up games. Florida at home and on the road against Notre Dame, LSU and Texas fell under the questionable category, but Shane rebutted Bratton's thoughts on the game against the Gators in College Station. "This is a sweet little schedule. We're so quick to talk about Mizzou, Tennessee and Ole Miss, but A&M has a pretty easy (schedule)," Shane said. "It's not easy because nothing's easy when you have SEC teams on your schedule, but as of right now, I'm really liking this schedule." If everything continues to trend in the right direction for the Aggies as the program transitions into fall camp, Texas A&M could potentially be a dark horse to reach this year's CFP. Michigan State basketball takeaways, highlights from opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am

Check out some of the notable Michigan State takeaways, injury updates and highlights from opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am McCulloch said he is 2 weeks into a 6-week recovery from a stress fracture in his foot. Plans to be back to full basketball activities in late July. A Michigan State basketball summer tradition is officially back. The 20th annual Moneyball Pro-Am event tipped off on Tuesday night, with many Spartans once again taking place in this year's event. This event annually provides fans and media some early insight to the upcoming season and helps set expectations for players and the team as a whole -- keeping in mind you have to take any positives with a grain of salt, of course. The opening night on Tuesday included some interesting takeaways and notes, as we were updated a key injury status, got our first look at some new players and witnessed Coen Carr doing Coen Carr things at the rim. Here are some of the notable takeaways, thoughts and highlights through social media posts related to the Spartans participating in the opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am -- courtesy of fans and media with boots on the ground in Holt, Mich.: Jesse McCulloch recovering from foot injury Jesse McCulloch -- one of the Spartans' key big men for this upcoming season -- is in he midst of recovering from a stress fracture in his foot. He told Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press that he is expected to back to "full basketball activities" in late July. McCulloch redshirted this past season and is expected to play some key minutes for the Spartans this upcoming season as either a reserve or potential starter at center. Incoming freshman also sits out opening night Another potential injured Spartan to monitor is incoming freshman small forward Jordan Scott. According to Solari, Scott was at Moneyball on Tuesday but was not dressed in uniform and spotted with a sleeve on his left calf but expects to be back playing next week. Scott told Solari it's just a "precautionary move" after tweaking it recently. Jordan Scott here tonight at Moneyball but not in uniform. Wearing a sleeve on his left calf. No Jeremy Fears either (guessing he's at the NBA draft with his family). Carson Cooper and Trey Fort playing in this first game of the night. New Spartans PG Divine Ugochukwu impresses Multiple fans in attendance on opening night posted on social media about Ugochukwu looking impressive, particularly his shot. This is a notable development as the Miami (FL) transfer shot only 17.6% from three-point range last season, with fans noting his shot as a concern as he joins the Spartans this upcoming season. You can see some of his highlights from the night in the video posted on social media below: Divine Ugochukwu on the opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball First look at incoming freshman PF Cam Ward Ward is a player that some expect to have an instant impact on the Spartans this upcoming season. Here are some highlights from his opening night at Moneyball Pro-Am: Cam Ward on the opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball Positive reviews for MSU transfer SG Trey Fort Like Ugochukwu, multiple fans had positive things to say about Fort's opening night at Moneyball Pro-Am. The Samford transfer was one of the big gets for the Spartans this offseason and is expected to start for Michigan State this upcoming season. Highlights from Fort's night can be seen below: Trey Fort on opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball Coen Carr can still light up the gym Moneyball Pro-Am always results in fun highlight plays (especially since defense is typically optional), so of course there was going to be at least one Carr massive dunk.
