Libya Observer28-07-2025
The Mayor of Kufra, Abdul Rahman Aqoub, said that the city continues to receive Sudanese refugees on a daily basis due to the ongoing war in Sudan, noting the lack of accurate statistics or fixed numbers due to the constant influx.
In a press statement, Aqoub explained that the support received from some organizations is "negligible," while the city's residing refugees exceeding 61,000, which is equivalent to the original population of Kufra.
He emphasized that most refugees rely on local aid for food and medicine. He pointed out that the electricity crisis has exacerbated the suffering of refugees living on farms, with 90% of them lacking adequate shelter. He also noted the lack of medicine and scarcity of health services, amid frequent deaths and loss of life in the desert, especially during summer. News Tagged: Al-Kufra sudanese refugees

At least 50 Sudanese displaced people rescued in Al-Kufra desert

The Emergency and Ambulance Service in Al-Kufra has announced the rescue of about 50 Sudanese displaced individuals, including women and children, who were stranded in the desert south of the city. According to a statement posted on Facebook, members of the Anti-Illegal Migration Agency in Al-Kufra found the group on Thursday morning in the Siouf Boufatma area, located about 450 kilometers from Al-Kufra. On Wednesday, the spokesperson for Al-Kufra's Municipal Council, Abdullah Suleiman, called for the reopening of the Sudanese consulate in the city, citing growing humanitarian and administrative challenges due to the increasing influx of Sudanese people fleeing conflict in their home country. Suleiman said that Al-Kufra is one of the Libyan cities receiving the highest number of Sudanese refugees—around 60,000—some of whom suffer fatal accidents or illnesses, highlighting the urgent need for a diplomatic presence to provide legal representation and safeguard their interests. UN reports surge in Sudanese refugees arriving in Libya, warns of looming funding crisis

UN reports surge in Sudanese refugees arriving in Libya, warns of looming funding crisis The United Nations has reported a sharp increase in the number of Sudanese refugees entering Libya, warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis amid a critical funding shortage. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), nearly 313,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Libya since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan — a rise of 256,000 compared to the previous month. In a report issued on Friday, the UNHCR projected that by the end of 2025, the number of Sudanese refugees in need could reach 621,000. This would mark a 40% increase — or 446,000 additional people — compared to figures from November 2024, based on estimates from the 2025 Refugee Response Plan. The World Food Programme (WFP) has also raised the alarm, appealing for $13.5 million in urgent funding to continue providing vital food assistance to Sudanese refugees inside Libya. In a statement, the WFP warned that without immediate financial support, it will be forced to suspend aid to thousands of vulnerable people. 'We will not be able to maintain support to the targeted refugee population unless additional funding is secured,' the agency said. Tags: Sudanees refugees
